I'm going to build a controller for use with my PC and DC. What's the best option? Build around a DC controller then use a DC>PC converter, or build for PC then use a PC>DC converter? Or is there a third I don't know about?
Seriously, I don't know why people stuff about with converters. I never seem to have luck with them. And if I have mates over, a stick per console/PC means more than one person can play at a time.
I agree with elvis, as the DC converters suck. PS2 converters on the other had are pretty reliable, and I've never had any lag. Just hack some cheap DC pads and sick to PS2 stick->usb converter for the PC.
It's all about cost. For the same price (I'm on a self-imposed budget) I can either build two controllers with Happ controls or one controller with Sanwa controls. Since I'm the only person I know that gives a damn about joysticks, the choice is clear. Trust me, if it was only about doing the optimal thing then of course I'd just build separate sticks.
Well there is no reason why you can't hack both DC and PSX pads to one stick project (one set of controls). You will only have one plugged into a console at a time! Then you get DC/PS/PS2/PC compatibility (with the PS2->USB converter).

Here's a link to some guys who built a fighting joystick setup with one set of joysticks, and a series of controller boxes that plugged in for various consoles: http://mywebpages.comcast.net/jdpyle1/controls.htm
Best of all, if you ever buy a new console down the line, simply make a new controller box and away you go!

One issue has been finding controls with common grounds for all buttons.
You shouldn't have that problem if you buy madcatz DC pads, and PSOne playstation pads. Not sure about the saturn (I doubt it multiple grounds, just buy the Sega official one).
