Can't seem to get my RGB RXi 201 to work properly (sync?)

Post by RottenToTheGore »

Sorry for the long post to follow, I just want to document everything so I can find a solution.

So I'm trying to use my RGB 201 on my PVM, mainly testing it now, but plan on having it at the end of the chain after a switcher. But whenever I hook my SNES up to it, I can't get an image out of it. Well, you can see *something* but it's too distorted to see anything. Here's how I have it set up.

SNES - Jr Model with RGB Amp (https://console5.com/store/nintendo-mul ... o-kit.html, getting RGB and CSync from vias)
Scart - SNES NTSC Scart cable...

The cable is crap quality, no shielding or anything. I plan to make a better one later, but I currently get a perfectly playable image when going straight to a scart>bnc cable. I've also confirmed/changed some components in the cable. It came wired for sync on composite, but I opened up the console connector and moved the wire to the csync pin. There was a capacitor in the scart head (can't recall the value), which I removed and added a 330 ohm, 1/4 watt resistor to the line. The RGB lines had 220uf capacitors like they should.

I should also point out that I removed the resistor and wire for +5v, I didn't think I would need it, and wanted to test that. The cable I plan on using for my custom cables only has 4 wires (audio will be added separate) so I wanted to make sure it didn't cause an issue. Again, when going right to the scart>bnc the image was fine before and after changing all of this.

From there I built a scart to VGA cable to go into the RXi. I cut a VGA cable in half, and used the following images to wire it to a scart head...

For sync, I used the teal line. Made sure to check that I had the right wires by using a multimeter on the pins
So yeah, SNES>Scart>Scart>VGA>RXi>BNC out into the PVM. Tried messing with the various dipswitches on the back and no luck. I also tried using a whole mishmash of adapters (Scart to BNC>BNC Adapters>BNC to VGA) and had the same results. Speaking of the mishmash, I have used something similar to connect a Wii to it, just trying it out, and it worked just fine via component. So I don't think it's the unit, just something I'm doing wrong.

I think that's it, hope someone can help!

The 201 specs require TTL sync, so you may want to try feeding it the csync direct from the SNES without the resistor. No idea if it actually requires TTL sync in practice, but per spec it's "2 V to 5.5 Vp-p with ±0.2 VDC offset max"

Of course, this also raises the question of why you're putting an RGB interface betwen the SNES and the PVM...

Mostly for the heck of it really. I had planned on putting it just before the TV, coming from a crosspoint. Figured I'd use it for slight screen adjustments, and with a super emotia when needed.

I'll try taking that resistor out tonight, thanks!

Looks like that didn't help, but I think I'll shelve it for now.

I worry because I know this and the crosspoint need csync, so I hope the issue doesn't come back up when I start getting things put together.

Edit: Looks like the crosspoint only needs at least .05v, so that's good.
