Enjoyed it but I think it missed the 'awesome' mark with a few mistakes. Just a bit too shy and lacking a real good finale.

Logan (2017)
Too fucking bleak and depressing. It's an experience in pessimism, but why in the X-Men universe ?

Enemy Mine (1985)
A bit dated and cheesy 'sci-fi with a message', but it's got its charm.

Last film i saw was I Am Not Your Negro

the content of the film wasn't exactly new to me but the way it was packaged the narration use of footage and music was excellent

was nice to watch a documentary that was more of a "film" and not just archive footage and talking heads

Micmacs - loved it so much I'm going to buy it on blu ray. last month I saw Amelie on broadway with Phillipa Soo, and the girlfriend wanted to rewatch Amelie when we got back. After our rewatch I had to show her delicatessen of course... (which in my eyes is the superior film). Neither of us had seen Micmacs, but it's Jean Pierre-Jeunet so expectations were high and it did not disappoint. I've never seen Dany Boon before and he was a pleasure to watch. You have your usual Dominique Pinon and Yolande Moreau, and I was even surprised to see Omar Sy since I haven't seen him in anything since L'ecume des jours or Jurassic World.

Basically about a guy who takes a slug to the noggin, he finds out the arms dealer responsible for the bullet is also responsible for his father's death, and he finds an interesting homeless family (well... the family finds him) that all have their interesting skills/quirks that they use together to get back at the dealer. Very entertaining and some real laugh out loud moments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TjKW0tG7I8s
there's a nice little easter egg in there if you've seen delicatessen as well.

we're going to continue our Jeunet spree tonight and watch the city of lost children.

I didn't want to watch Alien: Covenant. But I decided to anyway. I'm not too fond of prequels, and Aliens is still the best.

Just saw Colossal- it was really great. I would suggest going in without knowing much about it other than watching the trailers, because it goes to some pretty surprising places that had me thinking about the movie a lot after it was over- probably wouldn't have been so impactful if I had read a full synopsis or whatever.

Yep, ol' PC Engine Fan X! went to see Alien Covenant in DFX presentation with upgraded Dolby Atmos surround sound treatment today 5/19/2017 -- packs quite a powerful audio punch indeed. This sequel is a follow-up to the events that leads to the ending of Prometheus which takes place a mere 10 years later in 2105 A.D.

Alien Covenant clocks in at 2 hours & 2 minutes in duration. According to imdb.com, the initial production budget is estimated at $97 million USD -- plenty of the usual Ridley Scott trademarked high-tech & lavish background scenery that was prevalent in Prometheus is abound in this sequel (including the slick holograms return appearance).

The official tagline presented in the full-length AC trailer: The path to paradise begins in hell.

What happens when David and Dr. Shaw get to this so-called "Paradise" planet, home world of the "Engineers" (the origin of humanity)? This question is answered in this film with a certain flashback scene that takes place.

What happens to Dr. Shaw during that ten year span? This particularly pressing question is answered as well.

Upon reaching the eventual conclusion, does the audience see the true ending of what will eventually come next (a 3rd sequel to continue the Prometheus trilogy). Still no mention of this LV-426 planet anywhere in this sequel whatsoever (as shown in Alien and Aliens). The mysterious "Company" aka Weyland-Yutani conglomerate is still up to it's ol' bag of devious tricks in this sequel (aside from space exploration, terraformming new worlds, deep space mining, bio-weapons divsion, etc). Weyland-Yutani's ad slogan: "Developing Better Worlds" comes to mind.

There is a certain line mentioned in this AC film that Blade Runner fans will remember with fondness -- do not miss it. Upon my hearing it, it brought a grin to my face.

There are a couple of visual easter egg nods for the die-hard Alien franchise fans, blink and you'll miss 'em (the countdown timer HUD user interface originally shown in Alien and a bird that self drinks by perpetual motion make a return appearance for ol' times sake/nostalgia).

I can see the reasoning for Mr. Ridley Scott expressing his desire to direct the 2nd Blade Runner sequel back in 2015 but he had his hands tied down in directing this Prometheus sequel -- so it's understandable. As it stands, Mr. Scott is a producer of this 2nd BR sequel.

LIFE

Guessed the ending shortly before it happened. Started terribly, but I knew zero about the movie going in so I thought it was a rubbishy Spielberg shmaltzy thing about life on other planets where they'd heal old sick people or something.

Luckily it turned out to be different and fairly enjoyably. Cliche, but then hard to get away from that. I thought the leading woman was good, and Gyllenhaal always delivers just enough. The rest were literally expendable anyway, and some of the dialogue was garbage with far too much clunky exposition. No idea why anyone keeps casting Hiroyuki Sanada, especially reprising his Sunshine role. The guy is such a blank actor he barely meets any level of impression - if he wasn't a handsome older Japanese gentleman ticking the racial variety box he'd be almost non-existent.

The alien was middling, not sure about the design, although I appreciated it not being large, black and dome headed with a secondary mouth.

I'd give a decent 6.5 and suggest watching it the once if you fancy a sci-fi em-up and have time to kill. Could have been worse.

Saw the BLAME! Netflix movie. It wasn't bad at all.
It doesn't really follow the story of the manga and is its own self-contained story instead, which I guess works out well enough in the format of a movie. It's not too bad since the story of the manga was quite incomprehensible to begin with, but there are some moments and scenes I'd like to see again which didn't make their way to the movie, maybe they will in the future.
The visuals are very nice to look at, especially the wide open backgrounds of the manga have been adapted rather well. It's CGI, but the tolerable kind of CGI. Despite that there's still the stylistic choice to make character movements incredibly choppy in order to imitate traditional 2D animation, as with most Japanese CGI, which I can't for the life of me understand why they keep doing that.

As with most Polygon Productions stuff, the sound design is very well done. The soundtrack has some tracks that are very fitting for the setting, and some more generic orchestral tracks which I feel have no place in BLAME! at all. There's a bit more talking in the movie than in the manga, unfortunately it didn't seem like five minute long walking sections where nobody talks and walks around in large open environments wasn't an option.

It feels like your usual Wild West where a stranger helps out a troubled village and rides off into sunset after everything is over, except it's set in the far ultra-postcyberapocalypse. It's worth a watch I'd say, even if you haven't read the manga.

Get Out

Somewhere in the USA (filmed in Alabama) a black photographer has a white girlfriend; she takes him to visit her family in their out of town mansion for the weekend, but he's worried that they might be racist; they don't appear to be, but many things are strange...

Unusually brilliant writing, with all minor characters and details serving one or more important purposes; the weird elements are scary, meaningful and well explained.
Not a masterpiece because, after all, it's only an exploitation horror/fantasy story about an important issue like racism, but highly recommended.

Kinda makes you wonder why the "Company" doesn't use androids for combat missions in the military as all-purpose disposable soldiers. The reference of the David & Walter characters refers to the writers of the Alien film franchise. And how long do such Company owned androids last (meaning their average lifespan -- certainly a lot longer than the Replicants made by the Tyrell Corporation easily with their limited 4 year lifespan as a built-in "fail-safe device")?

Hard Eight (1996) - Paul Thomas Anderson
Going through some of Paul Thomas Anderson's films that I have not seen. Starting with this one, his first feature length.
Engaging film. Liked it a lot. Philip Baker Hall was great and Gwyneth Paltrow was also quite good.

"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2"

I really liked it. It wasn't as good as the first one, but that's (to me) a *very* high bar to reach for. Bloated a bit, perhaps, but still lots o' fun to be had.

Skykid will hate it.

Tooooooo loooooooong

Really could have snipped this down in the editing room by 25 minutes. Was genuinely sleepy in the dragging parts. There were so many unfunny, redundant humour attempts and leaden dialogue scenes that they could have easily made it more lean. The story with Starlord's daddy was boring and dragged out ages before something actually happened - it was the sort of thing other movies wrap up in the first 30 minutes.

Overall it was entertaining enough, although no great shakes in either the Hollywood world or that of superheroes. It had amusing moments despite the 'humour' being the same stock American type that gets really grating because it's all about long pauses, double takes, calling people by celebrity names as means of an insult, and getting away with no real punchline. It's akin to Disney cartoon humour, basically.

Works well as a Saturday morning cartoon turned movie, if you take it that way. Some fun stuff, Kurt Russell is ever welcome, and the green chick is still shit.

The ending was upbeat, but I still feel they can't capture an actual sense of 'adventure' the way it was done in the 80s and occasional 90s feature. It lacks a cohesion and movement. It seems like it's all there what with side stories and stuff, but it ain't got the creative power of ESB or Temple of Doom.

I'd give it a healthy 6.5

Really getting fucking old to keep repeating this. You deal with your own inept ability to analyze and critique cinema without referencing me every time. If you thought the first film was a "high bar" for cinema that's your own shortcoming and you should go back to school. Using me as a "high bar" for film crit is justified and I understand it, but I'd still rather you made your own conclusions without having to name drop me like a stuck record.

Inherent Vice (2014) - Paul Thomas Anderson

This is high quality stuff right here. Anderson gets heavy 70's vibes happening with the great Joaquin Phoenix. Also starring; Benicio Del Toro, Martin Short, Josh Brolin and Owen Wilson. All in top form. I immediately liked it as much as There Will Be Blood (2007).
At this rate I might even watch Boogie Nights (1997).
The film definitely has a Coen Brothers feel. Don't know much about the author but I hear he is not an easy read? Its a hard film to say more about. Like, it is what it is, man 8)
It is certainly not for everyone. I loved it. Oh, also, it is one of the most hilarious films I have seen in a long time.

Man, I wish I could agree. I just didn't get Inherent Vice at all. Funny you mention the Coens because I remember watching this movie on back to back nights with their Llewyn Davis film and wondering how it was possible that I could be so bored and disappointed by two back to back nights of new PTA & Coen Bros films I had been otherwise anticipating.

Did you just not "connect" with it, or did you basically dislike it? Joaquin's "Doc Sportello," clicked with me and I was interested to see his story arc. He was just trying his best in Posthumous damage control for the hippie scene. Failings of which were epitomised by Charlie Manson.
And all this done in a way that strongly hints that you, the viewer, should get high before watching 8)
Spoiler
But did Charlie emerge organically from the "scene", or was there someone pulling his strings. The character "Coy Harlingen" goes some way to answer this question and Doc goes above and beyond to try to save him. Also that credit card for Coy near the end was, I felt, another Manson reference.
All of this and much, much more, told in very "free-form" way. I get what your saying though and to tie the Coens back in, I fell out of love with them around 2001, feeling the same boredom and disappointment that you cite.

Aristocats: Good stuff. Very fun movie with some excellent voice talent, including Phil Harris (Baloo), Scatman Crothers (Hong Kong Phooey), Eva Gabor (Green Acres, Rescuers), and Sterling Halloway (The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh). I especially liked Napoleon and Lafayette, two crazy dogs that had to be the inspiration for Woofer and Wimper on Clue Club.

Guardians of the Galaxy v. 2: I liked this quite a bit. Baby groot was cute and funny. I also liked Kurt Russel. I also have a soft spot for characters like Drax the Destroyer and Captain Caveman.
Spoiler
Marvel also teased Adam Warlock at the end. I hope they handle him well and don't turn him into a one shot villain.

I also watched Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders, a recent movie in the style of the 60s series complete with Robin saying "holy" everything and random PSAs. It's closer to some of the better episodes of the series, where it often gets dark at times and has some nice references to TAS and other Batman movies. Adam West, Burt Ward, and Julie Newmar reprise their roles and new cast does a nice job, as well.
Spoiler
I loved how the movie poked fun at the ending of Dark Knight Rises. Holy Unsatisifying Ending, Batman!
