Funny you mention the Coens because I remember watching this movie on back to back nights with their Llewyn Davis film and wondering how it was possible that I could be so bored and disappointed by two back to back nights of new PTA & Coen Bros films I had been otherwise anticipating.
Did you just not "connect" with it, or did you basically dislike it? Joaquin's "Doc Sportello," clicked with me and I was interested to see his story arc. He was just trying his best in Posthumous damage control for the hippie scene. Failings of which were epitomised by Charlie Manson.
And all this done in a way that strongly hints that you, the viewer, should get high before watching
But did Charlie emerge organically from the "scene", or was there someone pulling his strings. The character "Coy Harlingen" goes some way to answer this question and Doc goes above and beyond to try to save him. Also that credit card for Coy near the end was, I felt, another Manson reference.
All of this and much, much more, told in very "free-form" way. I get what your saying though and to tie the Coens back in, I fell out of love with them around 2001, feeling the same boredom and disappointment that you cite.

Fun Fact: I have like 5 pairs of the stripped jeans that joaquin phoenix wears in the trailer.
Groovey. If your the type of dude that actually wears those stripes (rather than just owning them

) I would take that as a strong sign that you should watch this righteous film, post haste.
