by using what output on what machine ? 16:9 480p is still 720x480, just anamorphically stretched.
I am specifically talking about games who's native aspect ratio is 16:9, see this game:

Image

That's what you get an when your Wii is set to "4:3" and it's outputting this game on a 4:3 screen in 720x480, notice the active picture is only of 720x360. By outputting the game in it's native aspect ratio (without letterboxing) you will get the full resolution on the active picture.

Here is what you told me in PM (I hope you don't mind me posting it here):
Lawfer wrote:Because I remember you telling me in 2013 that even though some SD/ED games have a "widescreen" mode they still looks better in their native aspect ratio and even though these mentioned Wii games are letterboxed widescreen, their native resolution is a 4:3 one.
Fudoh wrote:I was arguing because you get the same resolution from the system, no matter wether you output 4:3 or 16:9, but that's for games that properly support both modes.

For the Wii games that don't you don't gain anything by setting the system to 4:3, since the games get reduced in height as a result.

Example: if output a game like this in 4:3 letterbox and use a VP to increase the screen size and then you take the 16:9 output and use the same VP to display the game in the same size, the second result will look massively better (720x360 pixels on version 1 vs. 720x480 pixels on version 2).

I'm with you. Just wondering where you're pulling that 854x480 number from?

Oh that, I think it was someone on this forum who said something along the lines of "the Wii output in 854x480 for 16:9 mode", don't remember who.

I see, thanks for correcting this. So using the Wii standalone for even that won't yield any good result (as it'll just send a 720x480 output compressed to 16:9), a processor that gets rid of the letterboxing and outputs only the active picture at say 1920x1080 is a must, correct?

you still get 720x480 (active pixels) over 720x360 when using 16:9.

So that means, whether BazookaBen set his Wii in 4:3 mode or does this:
BazookaBen wrote:But anyway, my strategy when playing any 16:9-only Wii games on a 4:3 CRT is to set the system to "widesceen", then go into the CRT's service menu to reduce the height of the raster until you get a proper 16:9 picture. The reason to do this is that you're at least getting the full 480 lines of resolution on the vertical plane, instead of the 360 lines you get when you just use 4:3 mode with letterboxing.
The end result is the same? (As in, he's not gaining anything and the picture won't get any boost in quality?)

Have you never used a DVD player in the last 20 years ?

One is 4:3 letterbox, one is 16:9 anamorphic widescreen. You should only use 4:3 letterbox if your display has absolutely no option for displaying anamorphic content. Any monitor (or TV) built from the mid 90s onwards has this option. If BazookaBen has an older 4:3 the manual vertical squeeze he's proposing is a suitable workaround.

Could you go into a little more details as to why, please? From the way BazookaBen is putting it is that by displaying 16:9 Wii games in anamorphic widescreen rather than 4:3 letterbox that he does gain in picture quality as it kinda "increase the resolution density" as it concentrates the resolution all in the game's 16:9 scale (the black bars being added by the TV instead of the console) rather than wasting it on a 4:3 fullscreen output which only has an active picture of 720x360.

Well isn't that an improvement though? You did say so yourself that 720x480 increased with a processor will look massively better, over 720x360 increased with a processor.

exactly. I was just pointing out that unless you're using a very old CRT, you don't have to that manually, but the TV will have an option for anamorphic content.

yes, of course. Reason for me replying was your statement here:

there is no letterboxing on an anamorphic picture output, so technically you don't a need processor to remove any black bars. Anamorphic widescreen is a standard since the introduction of DVD in 1996 and even TVs before that had the option (because of the PALPlus standard).

I think the general gist of Lawfer's post is do Wii games look better in 4:3 or 16:9? Is 4:3 sharper and does 16:9 have more field of view?

If anyone's interested, I have found a 'Gecko' cheat code to add 4:3 support to Xenoblade Chronicles on the Dolphin emulator wiki:

I tested it out on an actual Wii through USB Loader GX's built in cheat code functionality and it seems to work well. It appears to be vert+ without stretching the HUD at all, but this causes small gaps on the top and bottom of the screen when an overlay is present (though they seem to extend slightly past the normal 16:9 frame so the gaps aren't huge).
Apologies but I don't have any photos of it at the moment. If anyone wants any I'll take some when I can :P

I wonder if this could somehow be applied to other games at all, would be interesting to see.

Whoa, that's really cool! Thanks! Is there a way to use this code with a disc version or do I have to load from USB or SD?

I wonder if it causes any performance issues, since the game has to render more geometry

I think you can with USB Loader GX, it has the ability to load straight from disc so you can probably set game specific settings for that as well (I haven't tried though). I suppose I should explain how to set up cheats through USB Loader GX (not sure about any other homebrew apps with cheat support):
Spoiler
If you're using a disc click the disc icon in the top right of USB Loader GX's UI, otherwise just select the game normally.
  1. On the channel screen, click "Settings"
  2. Click "Game Load"
  3. Scroll down and turn on "Ocarina"
  4. Back out and select "Ocarina" on the previous menu
  5. It should ask to download and generate a cheat file, click yes and let it do its thing
  6. It should have a list of cheats, just ignore it for now. You'll wanna take your SD Card out and put it in a computer
  7. In the root of the SD card, find a folder called "txtcodes" and open the file inside (should look something like SX4*01.txt; * is region letter)
  8. Copy the code from my previous post into the file, just follow the same formatting as the rest of the text file and you should be OK. I just copied it over another code and deleted the rest
  9. Save and put SD back in Wii
  10. Go back to the game's settings menu and ocarina menu again
  11. Check the 4:3 cheat on, save it and generate GCT file
That should be it off the top of my head. If anyone has any issues I'll try to help :)
As for performance issues, in gameplay there probably aren't any since you can zoom the camera in and out normally. Maybe there are graphical glitches or lag in cutscenes though, I wouldn't know :P

This remains the best resource I've found online for these games, so as an update:

Bit.Trip Complete is 16:9 only

There are now 4:3 Gecko codes available on the Dolphin wiki for:
- Donkey Kong Country Returns (can't recommend due to frequent culling and texture issues)
- Metroid: Other M
- New Super Mario Bros. Wii
- Skyward Sword
- Xenoblade Chronicles as mentioned earlier

EDIT:
If it interests anyone here, I have created a version of USB Loader GX that will autoboot the disc you have in the drive on startup, if you enable the Autoboot Discs option under GUI Settings
https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Pp2QrZ ... 2sKZj/view

I also come bearing screenshots (4:3 patched also have deflicker filter disabled)

Xenoblade Chronicles - vert+ with centered UI, looks a bit weird with 16:9 centered overlaid menus but not bad
Spoiler
ImageImage
Metroid: Other M - vert+ with stretched (or rather unstretched) UI, map looks pretty off.
This game also crashed on me with a disc read error when running through USB Loader GX, don't know if that's a common thing or not. The disc reads during loading sound like they're going to tear my Wii apart, even booting from the disc channel.
Spoiler
ImageImage
Skyward Sword - vert+ with centered UI. I recommend also adding the gecko code to disable the purple border when dousing, as it's definitely the worst looking menu

Code: Select all

No Dowsing Purple Border by Anarion

Donkey Kong Country Returns - vert+ with centered UI. I wouldn't recommend this one due to the high number of very bad looking 16:9 screen overlays just covering part of the picture, texture misalignments, and significant culling issues at the top and bottom of the screen. I also just noticed how hilariously smooshed Donkey Kong looks in 4:3.

I tried the 4:3 hack with Xenoblade Chronicles, and the framerate took a huge hit. So I'd only recommend it with emulation

I just tested one open area with a lot of enemies. It's an area that sees a few drops below 30 normally. When I switched to 4:3 it basically stayed below 30

Work better? As in, like not have tons of culling in the former black bar area?

Hopefully, but like I said I haven't tested it. The code from the Dolphin wiki also somehow would get Donkey Kong misaligned with the ground and show him floating a bit above it sometimes.

Interesting thread.

I wonder if anyone has ever compiled a list of 4:3 Wii games that self-pillarbox themselves (i.e., with the Wii set to 16:9 and the tv set to stretch/full screen mode, the 4:3 game is rendering its own pillarboxed borders). I've ran into a variety of these including Kirby's Dream Collection, Contra Rebirth (presumably Castlevania and Gradius do likewise), Super Mario All-Stars, and Mega Man 9 and 10. Some fill the sides with custom art and others just use black borders.

The norm on the Wii for 4:3 games such as Virtual Console content is that there's no 16:9 mode to enable when the Wii's widescreen mode is enabled. The player thus has to turn off stretch mode with their television's remote in order to properly display 4:3 content with a border on each side on their 16:9 tv.

But these exceptions actually have a 16:9 mode and create that pillarboxing internally rather than leaving it for the television to handle, ensuring that lazy people and those ignorant that they're playing a 4:3 game are still getting the proper 4:3 presentation at the end of the day with stretch mode enabled on their tv.

The only cost is that the Wii's limited 640×480 resolution in such instances is partially wasted on borders instead of being dedicated to the game itself.

In Mega Man 9 and 10, it also breaks the pixel scaling and shows artifacts.

I'll double check where the file is on the SD card, but you'd put the SD card in your PC, find the Game ID for DKCR online so you know what the cheat file's name is, then open it in a text editor and paste the lines in with newlines in between the codes (just match the existing formatting). Then afterwards make sure you don't hit download for the cheats again in USB Loader GX or it'll overwrite your changes.

Silly question but how do I add that code to the ocarina cheat list? I have all the other cheat codes there which USB loader downloads but how do I add my own?
I'll double check where the file is on the SD card, but you'd put the SD card in your PC, find the Game ID for DKCR online so you know what the cheat file's name is, then open it in a text editor and paste the lines in with newlines in between the codes (just match the existing formatting). Then afterwards make sure you don't hit download for the cheats again in USB Loader GX or it'll overwrite your changes.

Ok i was able to load the cheat but the screen turns black while the background music in the game can be heard. I suppose these cheats are region specific? My game disc is PAL. The code doesn’t specify any region.
