Reasons for Akai Katana and DDP SDOJ not being in MAME/Dumpe
I have been playing with a few solutions (PC, Pi, XB360 with VileTim) to play Cave games on my cabinet.
I noticed Akai Katana and DDP SDOJ are not available for MAME. Reading a bit over the internet as to why, I can't see a reason as to why not.
Does anybody know? Is it lack of somebody willing to loan his board? Is it already done but MameDev choose not to because it is too new? Or too complex (although it is the same board type as DaiFukkatsu)?

I've heard that SDOJ at least is actually dumped but hasn't been released due to its being too recent. CV1K emulation still has plenty of issues and I doubt there'll be much effort to improve it until the games have aged some more.

considering the games already have a noticeable amount of lag on the pcb and emulation only adds more, my estimate for a decent cv1k emulation is neverShepardus wrote:I doubt there'll be much effort to improve it until the games have aged some more.
not to mention trying to replicate the dodgy slowdown properly

Re: Reasons for Akai Katana and DDP SDOJ not being in MAME/D
My guess: some people whined it was too early when cv1k games began to be listed in MAME and so it was 'decided' to hold off the release of the late dumps some more time.
Probably nothing as serious as the deals for the rarest titles that hold immense value in the upper echelons of games collecting society though, so we'll probably see AK and SDOJ in MAME listed in the relatively near future (months, couple of years, smth)
Though as Banana said, it'll most certainly suck. You could beg in the streets "need cash for shmups" and get the money to buy both 360 ports within a week I think (even sooner if you don't mind the platinum edition)
EDIT: oh yeah also because supposedly they don't want to get in the way of Cave releasing more games on Steam. Lulz.

Thanks - I can only appreciate supporting active games by not releasing them.
Regarding lag; the choice between having not SDOJ PCB (and probably never have) vs. XB360 vs. Emulation - the choice will be the latter 2.
Though XB360 on a 15khz via VileTim has way too much interlacing. Hence, emulation would be my best bet (even if it takes a while to get there).

Use something that'll put out 240p - emotia, or the-probably-easier to find vsc + rgb interface chain, you-know-who outlines it all: http://scanlines.hazard-city.de/waiwainl wrote:Thanks - I can only appreciate supporting active games by not releasing them.

Now everything is better/easier. Some of the units will even work on resolutions higher than 480 if of interest...

I think the day it gets close enough Cave will be mostly out of fashion and people have moved on beyond bullet hell stuff. :p
Seriously neither mamedev nor even shmupsfarm either have time for it or actually want Cave games to be even a bit more decently emulated.
On the publishing side people shouldn't have too high hopes, the Steam/Degica thing was a bit of a disappointment technically and it didn't get past the licences Cave had previously published overseas (360, iOS, Android) so at best we'll get a final port of Galuda II and that'll be it.
M2 will probably only port a fine selection of their favourite shmups, but definitely not the bulk of the Cave library.
So a JP 360 with either a good flat panel + scaling solution, or a proper downscaling + CRT solution, is still by far the best compromise, and will remain for a loooooong time.
I'll add that the patches/fixes and DLC things for all the 360 Cave library won't be available on the Xbox servers forever.
Isn't XLA closing in September ?

Xbox Live Indie Games is shutting down, but I don't think Xbox Live Arcade (of which XBLIG is a subset) is.

You really want to play this game, but don't feel like supporting the actual company that made it because the existing port for the game doesn't run in native 240p?
Man, tough times.
Also, something about comfort.

It's not like buying the PCB or Xbox 360 port from somebody else is going to help CAVE in any way. If you really want to contribute to their bottom line, go play Gothic wa Mahou Otome.

Lol I thought the 360 was about to be kicked out from every of their services. :pShepardus wrote:Xbox Live Indie Games is shutting down, but I don't think Xbox Live Arcade (of which XBLIG is a subset) is.
Probably a small quantity of bottom-of-some-warehouse clearance though with a price set by someone who knows it can still sell for real money.Sumez wrote:Play-Asia still has it up for sale, are those second hand copies?
Apparently they also have the super expensive, super limited edition.
There are also some of the 360 shmups new on Amazon from time-to-time.
