New Super Mario Bros. DS out on May 7th!
Yeah, Tezuka is iffy. I am still leery of him ever since Yoshi's Story. But like i said, hopefully his weirdly translated statement simply means he is trying to strike a balance with the challenge of the original. Really irritates me how Miyamoto and all the NOJ staffers seem to be scared of hurting the self esteem of preschoolers when it comes to their modern games.UnscathedFlyingObject wrote:The man is a walking paradox.

What? I thought Mario Sunshine was for pussies.
"I want to recapture the spirit of the original Super Mario Bros."
The original is more difficult than Sunshine.

I think Nintendo is just doing their own thing as always.Alpolio wrote:I think that Nintendo started putting this together because of how well the public took to the new 2D Sonic's that Sega has been putting out for their handhelds. Sonic Advance 2 is so cool that my 8 year old neice snagged it from me!
I just hope they don't put in many "easy" warps and strike a good balance in the power ups. But I have faith in Nintendo on this one... they already said they wouldn't release it until hey were sure it was the best SMB game ever.
And though I know that's a bold statement and something every company would say, but Nintendo just can't afford to let people down on this one!

Didn't miss much actually. About the only interesting thing I saw there was a copy of Radiant Silvergun PG had in their booth, and they wanted $500 for it. Little to no shmup-relatec content on hand eitherPaCrappa wrote:Man, I ended up not going. If it is, that one is seriously tough.

Haha, yeah, I'm not PG's biggest fan. My buddy Gerald pretty much got them to pay him to "buy" a PCE Duo R at the show. I got a good laugh when he told me about it.Vexorg wrote:Didn't miss much actually. But yeah, I've been to two of those things and at the '04 one I had a sweetass booth of my own. The sad thing was I was literally the only "Neo-Classic" representative there. It was sad to me that there's all this fervor over Atari. Bleh... Not interested. Colecovision, Vectrex and any incarnation of fucked up Laser Disc type machine can kiss my ass as well.
Maybe next year

Mario was all about the drug abuse back then mannnnn......sethsez wrote:It never looked anything remotely like a marijuana leaf...
On a more serious note, Mario's powerups were not based on drug abuse at all. In fact, Miyamoto got the idea of the mushrooms that make Mario big from Alice in Wonderland. And the racoon leaf is based upon the Takuni legend. Now, if someone could explain the Starman and the Fire Flower......
Shmups: It's all about blowing stuff up!
Here's some new screens, from Nintendo's site:

Looks shweet. I hope it sells trillions to show devs that old school can still sell. It would be mad shweet if we could get more classic Contra, Castlevania (with some upgraded mechanics), Ninja Gaiden, Mario (yeah, another one), etc.

Seriously, I hope more game designers learn that 3D Graphics + 2D settings = Win.
BTW Screen 21 IS from World 1-1 from the first SMB.

The world would be a better place if there were less shooters and more dot-eaters.

IGN review is up and is extremely positive. Couple that with all of the amazing videos popping up all over the web, and I am going to have a very hard time resisting a DS Lite launch-day purchase. Ah, well - this occasion is certainly worth it.
I hope this will not be the last 2 1/2 D Mario revival. Hell, I hope it does so well that we get a few games of this type on full-fledged console hardware.

Hey guys, the DS Lite won't be out in the US until June 11.

It's official: brighter, smaller, sleeker to hit next month for $129.99.
by Craig Harris
May 4, 2006 - Nintendo of America revealed today that it will launch the redesigned Nintendo DS Lite system this June 11th. When it lands on shelves next month, the DS Lite will ship in one color -- Polar White -- and retail for 129.99, the same price as current Nintendo DS systems.
The system's been available in ridiculously short supply in Japan territories since March, and that short supply may have affected when Nintendo of America could appease the stateside audience.
The changes to the Nintendo DS standard with the Nintendo DS Lite include a 20 percent smaller build as well as a smoother and sleeker body shape. The Start and select buttons and the power switch have been shifted around to new locations, and the stylus has been increased in size with a new storage location. Most importantly, though, the DS Lite features newer, brighter LCD screens with four levels of brightness settings.
Nintendo has not revealed if it plans on reducing the price on the existing Nintendo DS systems, or if the DS Lite will fully replace it in retail stores when it ships in June.

9.5, very impressive. Just read the review. Makes me jealous that IGN gets to play it a full week before we do.
Yes.
edit:
I just watched the Bowser stage video linked in the IGN review. Some things I like:
1.Mario doesn't make noise when he jumps. 'Bout time they got rid of the annoying "Yah, yeh!" noises."
2.A little flag automatically pops up when Mario hits the midpoint.
3.Bowser roars and struggles in the lava before turning into melty dino bones.
Even with the 3D capabilities, the designers keep everything at a modest level. There are occasional special effects that may make some go, "Hey that's pretty neat" - the water rippling effect on the surface of a pool, for example - but for the most part the game sticks to a rigid 2D visual design to make New Super Mario Bros. feel as close to Super Mario World and Super Mario Bros. 3 as possible in the contemporary design.
The game's layout is very similar in structure to Super Mario 3 or Super Mario World -
Yes.
