Being from a very conservative home, I didn't find out the details until Highschool where they demonstrated how to properly unroll a Force Pod on to a banana.
Nah, I think I didn't find out until my copy of R-Type DX for GBC. I wasn't much of a shmups guy at the time.

Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.
I first found out about R-Type II by reading a video game magazine. I didn't even know Nintendo published the AC version of the original R-Type in the US until recently (I knew Irem made the original game).
Love seeing those old magazine scans! My first encounter with R-Type was when the game launched for the SNES. I grew up playing Alpha Mission for NES. I remember being awed by the graphics of SNES games. Seems like a lifetime ago!

Even more when i used to stay looking at the same picture for three minutes, imagining the game.
Air Diver screenshot is great.
Yep I remember seeing it on location not an arcade but I think it may of been a Fish&chip shop (Diner) then shortly after in the arcade ,same with R-type Leo which I discovered on holiday in an arcade and was an even bigger shock. Information was not as good back then as it is today and although I read magazines it was a case of finding one and being surprised.
R-type II was released late 1989 and so I would be an energetic 18 year old running round arcades and other locations every week lol - good times.
I dunno, I remember seeing various R-Type / Gradius arcades in the late 80's and early 90's but could never really tell them apart. I always thought it was a cool genre though but I was more into beat-em-ups (bmups nowadays??) until I developed a kind of obsession with the horizontal shooters in the last decade. I just remember various coin-ops with lasers, spacey graphics and big boss fights. So glad I can play those same games now on a 42'' TV with shader effects / anti-aliasing etc from the comfort of my sofa. And of course, I don't need to put coins in any more! Yay for that alone!
