Switched gears to Cotton 2 a few days ago. This game really needed some kind of autofire as constantly drilling the shot button at a bubbled enemy to produce hearts is a great way to induce RSI. Aside from that, the speed-up section in stage 4 is currently giving me trouble... and the octopus boss always seems to throw a curve-ball at me. That said, I find the overall structure a bit easier to deal with than Cotton Boomerang (the life meter system, in particular, is far more forgiving).

Been working on my scoring routes in Progear.

Kind of feel like I turned a corner a little. Getting much better at positioning/directing bullets over enemies to increase my cancels.

I used to hit the 7 million extend around where the 1 up on stage 4 is, now I can hit it with stage 3's end bonus.

Ive been in an old school Nintendo mood, but I have been playing some Sin and Punishment 2 if that counts. Also , I just bought Strikers 1945 for Saturn off ebay so I'm looking to get into that.

Well haven't gotten the 3 million extend before boss 2 yet but I am consistently getting 7 million by Jimchuck.

After being comfortable with stage 4 to the mid boss for what seems like ages I have finally started routing the 2nd half of the stage.

Galaga Arrangement and Xevious Arrangment for the Namco Collection Volume 1. I like that both are more instinctive then most shmups. Plus, Galaga Arrangement is a lot deeper then most people realize, even the creators haha.

Latest roadblock is the stage 3 boss on Hyper.

Was finally able to dodge Jimchuck's last attack sans bombs.

In case you're unaware, there's a trick you can exploit on that last attack, where if you point-blank the main cannon and move in a clockwise circle, adjusting as the attack gets faster and Jimchuck moves up and down, you can avoid all the bullets. Example here. Takes some getting used to but it pays off.

Is Mass Media's emulated Namco Museum the only home release of Galaga Arrangement? I understand the emulation in that package left much to be desired.

yes. There's a Galaga Arrangement in the 360 Namco Museum and one of the PSP collections, but it's a different game. The main issue with namco museum PS2/Xbox/GCN is that some of the ports were taken directly from the PSX collections minus tate (GCN Pac-Man seems to be different from the version on PSX and other mass media namco museums and has more accurate sound). Scaling options in Namco Museum PS2/Xbox/GCN are also disappointing.

EDIT: just had my best ever run. Almost made the stage 5 boss, not bad for less than 3 hours over a couple of days! I just need to get familiar with it.

Scoring still getting better on Progear, been hitting high 3's/4 million with my stage 2 bonus.

Came close before - had to settle for a 2 CC. No missed stages 1 and 2, shit the bed on 3 (died 3 times?!!?), no missed 4 (earned the 7 million extend and the 1 UP). Started 5, got the 11 million extend, died immediately, and then lost my last ship just before Volvox.

One less death on 1-4 and I am pretty sure I can tank my way through stage 5.

Practiced a bit yesterday. Routed stage 3 a little better/safer without sacrificing points. Also spent a fair bit of time routing stage 5's opening and practicing Volvox's 2nd form.

I'm working on it! Based on estimates I think I should be able to score 14 to 16 million when I clear. I wouldn't have stopped playing back in June if I didn't have to , wish I knew about rapid fire sooner

That said now that I've made the switch to stick things are much better, plan on spending a lot of time with horis this year. Looking forward to Xydonia too.

Also chipping away at Danmaku Unlimited 2 and Galak-Z. I'm not the biggest fan of either but I want to 'finish' them before I go buying more games.

AS far as shmups go, I'm working on Gaiaires. I got a couple more levels to go for a clear. My problem is my short attention span. I tend to jump from shmup to shmup never clearing much. Not to mention a couple hundred other games like rpgs and so on that I own. This year I focus on 1 shmup at a time. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Still working on Cotton2. Finally managed to break 4 million, but I'm now running into problems with the stage 5 boss. I guess the boss's aimed fireballs along with the random yellow pellets are my current hurdle. Did some minor credit feeding and managed to clear the game using 2 additional credits (for some much needed stage 6 and TLB practice). When I clear up stages 4 and 5, I dhould be able to SCC the game.
