Looking for more shmup

Post by ardiel »

I asked this before, but it's been a while and I've grown a bit. I feel I need new shmups to play. Making a new topic because my list is pretty long now.
No mobile games. I really like Crimzon Clover a lot. It is probably my favorite at this moment. Battle Garegga is ok but it can be really hard for me to see the bullets.

I have:
Batsugun
Battle Garegga
Crimzon Clover 1.00
Crimzon Clover World Ignition
Blue Wish Resurrection
ChoRenSha 68k
Blue Revolver
QP Shooting Dangerous
Witchbot Meglilo
Raiden
Mushihemasama and Futari
Donpachi, Dodonpachi, Daioujou and Daifukkatsu
Ketsui
Espgaluda 1 & 2, EspRaDe
Deathsmiles
XIIZEAL
DELTA ZEAL
Ikaruga
Kamui
Hurricane of the Varstray
Moedan
Ikusaaaaaaan!
Basically all the Touhous

Edit:
Almost forgot Mecha Ritz

PC mainly, MAME will do in a pinch. Also PSP and Nintendo DS are acceptable I guess but I already have Ketsui for the DS and I hear there isn't much else on there.

Ah, sorry! Pc and mame are the areas I know the least about. Quite right though, there isn't much for the ds other than the nano stray games (I haven't played them). Psp does have a few on collections like Gradius, parodius, capcom and snk collections. Also King of fighters sky stage, strikers 1945 and that Japanese hentai-ish one I can never remember the name of... But it's not a great system to play shmups on.

I might try some PSP ones. I have this one called Burunyan Man or something like that which is pretty fun. Reminds me of Trouble Witches, which I forgot to mention that I have. Or Gundemonium, which I also forgot to mention that I have...

Take some time to explore the rest of Toaplan's STG library, you'll see the origins of a lot of shmup tropes. Chronologically:

Tiger Heli
Slap Fight
Hishouzame
Kyukyoku Tiger
Tatsujin
Hellfire
Daisenpu
Zero Wing
Same! Same! Same!
OutZone (not a pure STG, a run-n-gun, but really good, among the best of its genre)
Vimana
Tatsujin Oh
Dogyuun
V-V

There are also a few Not-Toaplan games which had former staff members on their dev teams:
Twin Cobra II
Gekirindan
Air Gallet

All of these are fully playable in MAME, and as of v0.181, Same³ and Vimana finally have emulated sound (you'll need the new ROMs for these). There are a bunch of MD and PCE ports too (I recommend MD Zero Wing, MD Same³, PCE Tatsujin [for the music], and PCE Kyukyoku Tiger).

StellaVanity, the rest of the Tale of Alltynex, and the other Triangle Service shmups might be up your alley. Maybe Cambria Sword too, though that is a hori and your library's all vertical.

Also with no option formation switching for some reason!

There's also Fixeight, which similar to OutZone is a sort of top-down run-n-gun.

Thanks for the lists. Some of these are really awesome. I especially like Giga Wing so far.

I remember some of these and they bring back memories from the rare occasions when I actually got to play in an arcade, since most of the time I couldn't afford it.

A couple games on Steam you may be missing:

DariusBurst: Chronicle Saviors
- A classic horizontal shmup, this game has an incredible amount of content and is constantly supported by DLC.
Caladrius Blaze - A widescreen vertical shmup by Raiden devs MOSS that has a magical dark fantasy aesthetic, and unfortunately some dumb fanservice (but thankfully I think you can turn this off!).

That reminds me, any chance of Raiden V being ported to Steam?

Wow, looks funny but I might actually die from the graphics if I played it.

For ardiel,

Have you tried out the three Psyvariar shmups with the cool & innovative "Buzz" gameplay mechanic?

That'd be Psyvariar Medium Unit (Taito G-Card for the Taito G-Net arcade platform & PS2), Psyvariar Revision (Taito G-Card for the G-Net arcade platform & PS2) & Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate (Sega Naomi GD-Rom disc for the Naomi arcade Platform & Dreamcast GD-Rom disc). For a long time, I thought that a third proper sequel by the same name would be made & released to the general public but that was not meant to be. Alas, there's the iOS shmup port of Psyvariar REassemble to try out as well.

None of the Psyvariar games emulate particularly well, do they? I remember Medium Unit and Revision are at least playable in MAME, though.

All the ones I wanted to suggest are already in this thread, so I'm left with Battle Crust. heh

Seriously though, Crimzon Clover is so good.
