It's basically just supersample antialiasing with non-integer downscales and a bit of a softer sampling pattern. It's not particularly useful (or dynamic), as it messes up the UI on many games (since the games think they're running at higher resolution and they often don't scale the UI appropriately), and the performance hit is still much higher than traditional multisample antialiasing.
As long as the internal resolution is significantly higher, like at least 1.25x your output resolution height, then it looks pretty good in my opinion. Yeah, the HUD can get a little messed up, but it's been worth it in most cases, for me.

And on a side note, GeDoSaTo gives you more upscaling options with DX9 games, and works over any sort of connection

1.25x the height of the screen would require a hypothetical DSR setting of 1.56x or above. That's a big performance hit with a relatively minor quality improvement. You'll get a much bigger quality improvement for that sort of performance hit using MSAA. Or, if you want something softer, FXAA or TXAA.

I would argue that DSR only makes sense when you've maxed out your traditional anti-aliasing methods (like you've already tried 8xMSAA) and you've still got performance headroom, like when you're running older games (DSR can be combined with MSAA, IIRC), or if you're running a game that simply doesn't support (or doesn't work well with) traditional AA. In almost every other case, DSR will produce worse image quality for a given performance hit.

Yeah, totally agreed there. Only problem is that MSAA is starting to be less common due to how newer engines work. I think temporal effects have a tendency to break it. DSR does have the advantage of reducing aliasing on things MSAA misses, like foliage.

I need a high res photo of your CRT running FFXIV at max settings :!:

It's true that MSAA isn't compatible with deferred rendering, which many modern engines use. Shader-based techniques still work on those games, and SMAA has become very popular since it has almost no performance impact and doesn't introduce blur like FXAA or TXAA do. SMAA can be injected into games that don't natively implement it using ReShade.

Yeah, SMAA can be pretty great. Need to check out ReShade sometime. TAA also works great when it doesn't add too much input lag. Frostbite 3's implementation is beautiful in Battlefield 1 and Mirror's Edge Catalyst.

BazookaBen wrote:Yeah, DSR works because you're hooking it up either via HDMI (Nano GX) or Displayport (VCOM). Since your monitor maxes out at 76hz (or so) for 1200p, you could use DSR to down sample from a higher resolution and still have 76hz. Your display would still be getting 1200p, but it would look better after being re-sampled from, say, 3200x2000.
Oh, right! "DSR", I for some reason was thinking you meant HDR. lmao

Although, I completely forgot about achieving DSR with a CRT thinking it impossible, but I'll keep that information in mind. I do kinda echo what others have said about it being a bit blurry, but it's the only way to achieve "AA" on DX11 FFXIV so I might try to achieve that. However, with my VGA to DVI adapter, all I get is Nvidia reading the display as "Analog Display" and not "Sony GDM-W900" like before, even on PC reboot. It also considers my native resolution 1024x768, and thus, DSR is locked at that. It still works, but yeah, just not 1920x1200, only 1024x768.

I'm not sure if this is fixable or not.

Have you tried forcing AA via nVidia Inspector?

That's weird, sounds like what happens when you use BNC instead of VGA, since BNC doesn't have extra internal wires for EDID.

But you can use Custom Resolution Utility to change your native resolution. Whatever is in the first slot is considered your native resolution. CRU is basically a must-have for any CRT user. It just opens up so many possibilities .You can add about 30 or 40 custom resolutions with it.

Yeah, that only works with Direct X9 for FFXIV, and although it looks nice, the improvements to mass mob loading in DX11 is better for FPS in crowded areas, which MMO's tend to have.

All right, awesome. I'll give CRU a shot then. Thanks!

-edit-

Gave CRU a shot and it fixed my native resolution problem, although I noticed I couldn't hit 78hz with it anymore, only 77hz, and then nvidia stopped working with 78hz? Odd. Haha.

Anyhow, I used Nvidia's DSR once my native was fixed with CRU and it was really blurry, but then I set smoothness to 0 and it looks amazing.
