Best current-gen console for shmups

Post by Astro Warrior »

Hello everybody, I'm just thinking about purchasing a current-gen (Ps4 or Xbox One) console.

Shmups is my overall favourite game genre so with old-gen consoles the choice was very easy: Xbox 360 without any doubt!

This generation instead is more complicated as very few shmups saw the daylight: Raiden V for Xbox One and Dariusburst CS for Ps4 (Genso Rondo is a mix of buller-hell shmup and fiighting, is a bit strange for me!).

I know, Xbox One has a bunch of Xbox 360 games compatible (R-Type Final, Trigger Heart Exelica, Ikaruga) and Ps4 offers a few re-release of Caladrius Blaze and Battle Garegga but I don't want to consider them ;)

I only read about Natsuki Chronicle and Shooting Love Trilogy (and the latter one seems to be AGAIN a collection of Trizeal, Exzeal etc.) as upcoming games on Xbox One.

Fine, Raiden is my favourite shmup series so Xbox One should be the answer but I'd like to know if other interesting titles are announced for next months or, otherwise, if I forget other games.

I'd like to make my choice with the deepest knowledge of what each console offers.
I hope you can help me, thank you very much!

PS4 of course. Garegga's all you need.

As you said, the Xbone has Raiden V, some upcoming games, and is compatible with quite a few 360 shmups.
The PS4 only has DBCS, which can also be bought for much less on Vita and PC, and Genso Rondo, a game even some Touhou fans don't like.
Obviously, you should get the One. If you only care about shmups, that is.

Love, a PS4 user.

I think I'll go with One. Sadly, some very important 360 shooters are missing in backwards compatibility (my favourites are Strania, Radiant Silvergun HD, Raiden IV and Raiden Fighters Ace). Asteroids and Galaga are probably easier to convert but they are not real "milestones".
Maybe in the future they could be supported but future is unknown (somebody says that Scorpio will be fully backwards compatible but who can be sure of this?). Moreover, Natsuki Chronicle has been delayed twice and now release date is a generic "2017".

Have Cave, G.Rev, Moss or Triangle Service any project in development?

Wait, apparently there's this game called Ubusuna, made by M2 and the director of Ikaruga and RSG, that is supposed to come out on PS4. Too bad we know literally nothing about it, except that it exists. Maybe.
At least we know something about Natsuki.

Wasn't Ubusuna announced like 2 or 3 years ago?

I'm sure when it eventually comes out it'll be open world and have a crapton of boring sidequests.

Ubusuna was announced in the middle of 2014 and only on Hiroshi Iuchi's blog at the very start of development, Ikaruga took around 3 years to make in similar low-personnel/indie conditions so it's not too unusual so far, but I am a little worried about the media blackout at this point.
Anyway I wouldn't really expect an announcement on Ubusuna while M2 is still promoting ShotTriggers stuff, there should be another blog post from Hiroshi Iuchi at year's end to provide some kind of an update on what's going on.
Too bad we know literally nothing about it, except that it exists.
While it's obscure it's not intended to be that obscure, it's a non-handheld shoot'em up with a name that obviously references the yellow crystal from RSG/Ikaruga, which was called Ubusunagami. Let's do the math here.
Iuchi also worked on Kokuga before starting development on this game, which wasn't half-bad and had many of his designer gimmicks still in place.

Unless you're a really hardcore MOSS or Garegga fan, I wouldn't get either system with shmups in mind. Raiden V and Caladrius Blaze are excellent games, though.

If M2 are already favouring PS4 at this point, that system is a good bet. :) But it's too early to say for sure. Either way I'm certain it doesn't end with Garegga and Dangun, this is only the beginning.

Yeah, M2 seem like they're in it for the long haul. Wouldn't be surprised to get the whole Battle trilogy, Dangun, and a few other goodies. No idea what M2's priorities are, but they definitely know what they're doing.

I'm gonna be missing Natsuki Chronicle real bad when it comes out, though. Real bad.

NTSC-J: You know STGs are in trouble when you have threads on how to introduce them to a wider audience and get more people playing followed by threads on how to get its hardcore fan base to play them, too.

PS4 also has Resogun, Jamestown+ and Arcade Archives with classic arcade shmups reworked for use on HDTVs like Gradius, Gradius II, Salamander, Moon Cresta, Terra Cresta and others.

Just stick with the PC and offer sexual services to M2 staff until they agree to port Garegga

It's definitely the most exciting thing happening in the genre right now, for me, at least. There was some talk that M2 might do something with the Aleste series, as well. I'm hoping the ShotTriggers series continues for a loooong time -- as it stands, it suggests to me that the PS4 is (or at least is going to be) the clear choice for shmups this gen.

Yeah. For other publishers/developers, I might be inclined to say "Give me this game please!"

With M2 I have full faith that their picks will be better and more interesting than anything I could dream up.

There is no "best" current-gen console for shmups. PS4 might currently be the least bad.

Other than Raiden V, Xbone doesn't have much to offer. Not much is on the horizon for it except for those long-delayed shooters from Qute and Triangle Service. That aside, Xbone has the potential to be the best last-gen console for shmups if all the 360 shmups are eventually added to the BC list, since the Xbone's 360 emulator is region-free.

Wait, what, an Xbone will be able to run region locked X360 games regardless of region!? This is the first time I ever heard of this (admitted, I never really pay attention to what goes on with the Xbone), it's the best news I've heard in a long time, and would actually be an argument for me to buy a Bone! Time to nick a copy of Raiden Fighters Aces before the price skyrockets... (oh crap, it's already on its way isn't it)

Yes, I have confirmed it myself via hands-on experience. I own a copy of Clannad, a region-locked Japan-only visual novel released on 360 that was recently made backwards compatible on Xbone. The game plays perfectly fine on my US Xbone, no need to switch account regions, system region, or system language. Just pop the disc in, the BC version downloads automatically, and then plays perfectly once it's downloaded.
tomwhite2004 wrote:^not every game is playable, just those that have been accepted by microsoft.
Not exactly.

Microsoft first needs permission from the game's original publisher or current rights holder to add it to the BC program. Then Microsoft needs to configure the emulator specifically for that game until the game at least runs well enough to be playable.
