And in all honesty, I'm still holding out for a physical copy to show up along the road.
I just used this and translated to english in chrome and had no problems with the menus. - http://m2stg.com/battle-garegga/manual/
Self-plug, if you guys didn't notice, there's also this: http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=58944

I hope that's enough to make almost anyone able to navigate the menus with no problems!
Wow nice! Thank you for doing this.

Is the game playable in 4:3 tate, without the side information borders? Like in x360 shmups?

The game supports tate for sure, but not sure about actual 4:3 display compatibility since the PS4 is HDMI only. You can freely zoom the game window but not move its position.

Why do yourself the disservice and play Gain?
Play Bornnam if you're new. Unless you're going for high score and know what you're doing Gain is just unsatisfying with weak main shot and weird options.

As a counterpoint, I personally found Gain to be the most comfortable character to use back when I was new because his speed was just right for me and I liked his piercing options. Learning what boss parts and enemies you need to use main shot on honestly was a fairly quick process for me too; that data set is pretty small.

You don't want to play him if you're ignorant of the way rank works, for sure, though, and Bornnam is definitely the safer/simpler choice if you don't mind his speed.

Yeah, of course it all comes down to preference in the end.
But especially if you want to get into some scoring Gain is too complicated to be fun to start off with imo and Wild Snail ships are the most frustratingly RNG dependant ships in the entire game. They SUCK for score play. But then again, you might find that frustrating randomness to be fun too. :)

sadly no, since the ps4 itself only supports 16:9 in general

So Garegga Premium Arrange might be more interesting than I previously thought. There's a hidden system in the game that causes:

- rank to suddenly skyrocket to 100%,
- your score to continually tick up like Dodonpachi's MAXIMUM bomb bonus,
- medals to be attracted to your ship from anywhere, regardless of distance,
- score extends to become active again and at 1mil every.

Currently it's unknown how to return to normal rank-fixed mode, but it seems like you can drop back to normal mode under specific conditions, and retrigger rank max mode again, so it might be possible to manipulate this for scoring purposes without endangering your credit.

As for the trigger itself, it's theorised that to actually jump into rank max mode for the first time and set the trigger for later, you have to max out your medals before the end of stage one.

I just triggered it without max medals in stage 1, although I was TRYING to max them out. I think I'd gotten up to 3k.

I'd expect the activation trigger to be closer to 1k medals at the end of stage 1, since the highest you can get is 700pts normally without bombing the monorails.

I just did 1k, that didn't do it. hmm.

edit: so far it seems to be triggering consistently if I hit 2k at the end of stage 1. Looks like auto bomb cancels out of it, doesn't seem like dying cancels it.

edit2: 2k medals + auto bomb in stage 1, still triggered it. 2k medals + death: not triggered

Say out loud it's an obsolete ugly old 2D game anyone can finish in 30mn because it gives you infinite credit anyway.

Which ships are you using? Maybe it only triggers for the original four.

The video Icarus linked shows it happening when using Miyamoto, so I don't think that's it.

I ordered the box set but I couldn't help ordering a PSN card and buying it earlier today :P
So far the port seems great, I've not had a chance to delve into all the options yet.

I've been playing it feeling total disbelief that I'm actually playing Battle Garegga on a current gen system

I'm playing with the DS4 and it's going great but I think a stick is the superior option and will opt for one soon.

I just searched my post history and realised it has been exactly 7 years since my last post :!:

I'm so glad I got some new home theater stuff and I'm in the middle of a home improvement project. So reduced the temptation to double dip like this!

Really intimidated by the thought of getting max medals on stage 1. I'm pretty sure I can get up to like... 700  This is gonna take some work.

There are several bomb targets in stage 1 that release medals, which you can use to build up your medal chain more quickly. In the normal game you never want to bomb them since saving the bombs for the stage 2 birds is far more valuable, but apparently you need to take advantage of them in the arrange mode.

...You know, that makes sense, since there's no score extends in arrange mode to replenish suiciding for bombs on the flamingoes anyway... at least, if the 100% rank mode isn't activated.

8K medals at the end of stage 1 is the magic trigger.

No, both Icarus and I can consistently trigger it with 2k

the real question is how does one maintain the homing medals thru all the stages?

consistent 2k and 3k here but no rank max. had a theory that maybe you need max medals before the rank bar settles at the intro of stage 2, but just had a 7k run that almost instantly maxed on the first section of the tracks and no go.

Even when the game finally lays bare most of its inner workings after two decades of endless, often frustrating speculation, it can't resist adding something brand new and completely unexplained for us to theorize and banter back and forth over - I guess it's officially part of the Garegga experience, and M2 just couldn't sleep at night knowing they didn't do justice to the whole enchilada. :P

In seriousness, I assume M2 plans to put out some hard info on this at some point? Or are they determined to be really authentic and make someone hack it?

maybe I have to search through the options, but the only thing I don't like about the port so far is that you can't tap shot to set rapid speed.. you have to assign a rapid button. it'd be nice to be able to tap it manually and get some visual feedback from the hud or use the rapid button if you wanted

You can. Try tapping faster if it's not working for you.

Keep in mind that autofire is locked at 15Hz in Premium and Super Easy modes, though.
