Like I said, plenty of Japanese in the manual if ya want to practice. Welcome to Shmups, btw!FinalStryke wrote:Whoops, shows just how lazy I am. But awesome, if a little bit strange, because that means it'll be even easier to understand.

I posted something to this effect in the hardware forum, but anyway...
Before anyone else goes and upgrades, it seems possible that Gradius could be booted on 2.0. It works with Street Fighter Zero 3, so hopefully it'll work for Gradius too. Basically, from 2.0, use pspsetx to set your version number to 2.5, then try to run the game.
Now, could someone report whether or not this actually works? Hopefully I'll be getting gradius soon...

Set it as "Original Default" then you are good to go.Dylan1CC wrote:OK, my next 1CC goal is Gradius. For the first game, what is the default arcade difficulty? I assume it is "level 3 normal"? I played through the whole game using save states (to memorize some of the more vicious patterns), and now with an hour or so of practice I think I can 1 credit this classic.
And for other games: make sure to turn off wait level in GII, GIV and Gaiden. The slowdown in those games aren't very accurate.

Can you use this program with a 1.5 firmware PSP?ReKleSS wrote:Before anyone else goes and upgrades, it seems possible that Gradius could be booted on 2.0. Also, I still have not received an answer or even a comment on my previous question:
Shapermc wrote:So, how is the screen bluring? I have not really heard anything about this but if any knows what I am talking about please answer.
When I was emulating the Gradius games on my PSP the star field was really blurry due to the crappy refresh rate of the PSP screen. [...] I still have yet to see any PSP 2D game that does not have blurring

the game can't do anything about the screen's response time, so gradius portable is as blurry as anything else on psp. there aren't visible trails behind ships or bullets, but the outlines of moving objects look sort of smudged. i don't notice the ghosting as much as i do in sfa3, for whatever that's worth.
portable shmupping rocks, though. i'd love to see a psp version of r types, expanded to include leo, 3, and maybe delta.

Looks after learning Spanish I will have to up the super ante and take on Japanese.
Anyways, I popped this in again today at the office and am going back between 1 and Gaiden. As a first time Gaiden player I must say it completely destroys IV and just may be my fave in the series next to II and Galaxies. Will be interesting to see how I feel after I finally get around to playing V.
BTW, MSZ. Just to clarify, is wait level 1 normal for Gradius 1? I already know about the ones you mentioned where it actually needs to be turned all the way off to be proper.

No, level 1 is ok with Gradius I and III. Turn it off for GII, GIV and Gaiden.Dylan1CC wrote:BTW, MSZ. Just to clarify, is wait level 1 normal for Gradius 1? I already know about the ones you mentioned where it actually needs to be turned all the way off to be proper.
The manual mentioned about "level 1 is arcade accurate", which is very misleading.

I've only been playing the original Gradius for a little under 2 1/2 years on and off, and I just 1CC'd it on Portable a few weeks ago, albeit with small hitbox and wide screen.Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:ORLY? Couldn't you use this to downgrade your PSP? Set the firmware number to 1.0 and then "upgrade" to 1.5 ?ReKleSS wrote:I posted something to this effect in the hardware forum, but anyway...

No, it doesn't work that way. The only downgrade that can be done on a PSP is the one that turns a 2.0 to a 1.5 (MPH's downgrader).Ceph wrote:Couldn't you use this to downgrade your PSP? However, I really see no point in that anymore when homebrew runs so well on Fanjita's loader. Well, unless you're a pirate.

Apparently they don't all run, do they? Be that as it may, as long as it possible to run ANY homebrew software at all, it is possible to change the firmware any way you like. All it takes is someone with a programming knack to write a speciffic homebrew application for 2.6 that will do just that. Anything that can be done, will be done. Just a matter of time.nem wrote:No, it doesn't work that way. I plan on trying to 1CC without using the shield.gs68 wrote:I've only been playing the original Gradius for a little under 2 1/2 years on and off, and I just 1CC'd it on Portable a few weeks ago, albeit with small hitbox and wide screen.Sly Cherry Chunks wrote:ORLY? I rarely ever use shield. Speaking of that ^^^
The newest Mame (ver. 104 i believe) reads that Gradius IV is now a working rom - but when i load it up i sit through all the crazy booting it has to do and then it tells me to flip the 'test switch'. But there are multiple dip switches for the game and i can't figure out which one it is. Anyone know how to get it running?

Hmmm, so the shield raises the rank huh? Makes sense but that gives me even more incentive not to use it I suppose.gs68 wrote:I rarely ever use shield.
