SHMUP Collecting: 12 SHMUPS from the 16-Bit Era

Post by Aggro Sky »

Hey everyone, believe it or not, there is yet another new SHMUP Master video in the can. I did more than one this year! Woo hoo!

Image

Anyway, this one is a SHMUP collection video. I decided to try out a more off the cuff format this time. No script, just me talking about SHMUPS I've picked up over the last couple months and the stories behind how I found them (I've been to some cons and various stores etc). I built the video around this theme and did my best to inform and give an analysis of each game, and of course lots of pretty things to look at as well :D. All the games I found were from either the Sega Genesis/Megadrive or SNES/Super Famicom. And of course, only original hardware was used for the footage (actual consoles pictured above), capped with a Framemeister.

I'd love to start a discussion about some of these games and what everyone thinks of them. One of them I already started a thread on here a couple weeks ago, but I'm curious what people think of the rest. I also mentioned this forum in the vid on a couple occasions, so there's that too. Anyway, I would love to hear what you think. Enjoy!

That was a good Shmup chat video - thanks.

Thanks for letting us know about RR:R2, I knew of the game and the Trenz link but didn't realise it had a shmup section. I shall look into it.

You are in Central FL? Nice. You should come to Free Play Florida in November. My buddies and I run the console area and we are heavy on the shooters.

NP man! And while it may be insanely expensive now, you can get a Repro for $40-$50 and IMO it's worth it.

I'm in South Florida actually, about 2 and a half hours south of Orlando, but I have a lot of friends that live in that area. So I would love to go! Let's keep in touch. You are Twitter or FB?

Oooh yes, it shall have to be a flashcart for me or a custom cart. My collector's budget has a real limit :)

I salute and congratulate you on your efforts, for new gamers come and go and the passion must be spread by those who're willing to do it.
:)

In other words, it's always great to see genuine enthusiasm for retro gaming, even for already-much-talked-about games.
Keep it up!

Thanks! I appreciate the support! Although I disagree that games like Vapor Trail are much talked about, or Rendering Ranger either for that matter. Perhaps on hardcore forums like this, but not in the general gaming populace. I've had quite a few people tell me they have games they now want to pick up after watching this video that they had never heard of. Which is great and was my ultimate goal. I especially wanted to highlight Rendering Ranger because it's so obscure and misunderstood.

One thing we do have to remember when making retro gaming content: It has all been done before. Every game HAS been talked about by SOMEONE. So in knowing that, I try create a presentation to the games that is a bit different than most would do. I'm glad you appreciate that and think you very much for watching 8)

I watched your whole video while I was at a Hookah bar getting my smoke on. Good stuff. You sure like your 16-bit shooters don't you? I myself have a soft spot for them, but I will have to say that my personal favorite shooter system is Saturn. After I move into my new place though I'll be eyeing the Pc engine. I know its off topic , but do you shmup on Pc Engine? Another great system for the genre. Anyhow , how are liking Musha? My personal "big game" from that era is Space Megaforce/Super Aleste. Might just get the Jap version. I rambled enough, good job on the video.

Thanks! I appreciate it! And you know, yes, I love my 16-bit shooters. But let me explain why...

I started this little project 2 years ago, with the intention of ONLY releasing videos with footage from the original hardware, in the highest possible quality. So that severely limited what I could cover. Right now I have a model 1 Genesis with RGB and a modded SNES Mini with RGB. I got a Framemeister this past year so I could get even better footage. I also just got my NES modded for RGB and got that back a few days ago. So I'll now be able to cover NES games. But you see my problem right? According to my self imposed rules, I can only cover games on the actual hardware I own, through RGB.

Believe me, I would LOVE to cover PC Engine games, but they are SO expensive! Granted, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get one and make an exception for a Flash Cart. Because collecting for that system is insane. I would also like to get a Saturn but again, the games are so hideously expensive. I mean, have you seen what Radiant Silvergun goes for these days? Ugh... I know there are ways with the Saturn to play burned discs so I'd imagine if I got one I would have to go that route.

Anyway, that's my predicament. So for the time being, it's going to be mostly 16-bit games. Although I do have a NES now so I want to start covering some of the 8-bit gems too. Speaking of which... I picked up Abadox today :D

*Edit* I am loving MUSHA. I haven't put as much time into it as I'd like, but I will be covering it at some point in the future for sure.

I feel you Aggro on the crazy prices of Saturn. What I do to counter that is I don't spend my collecting money on 'filler' games. Its cool if one does that, but I think it takes money away from the games I truly wanna play. I'd rather have one Radiant Silvergun than 10 games I may not even play. In the next few months I'm looking to get Batsugun and a couple more for my Saturn, so I'm saving my chips. So its not hopeless. As for the Pc Engine/TurboRafix price issues, I did some research on it and found that just by getting the Japanese versions of the games saves you a bundle. That's actually good cause there's way more games that were made for the Japanese market anyway. There's little things like that that you can do. Also I never rush. I always wait for deals, be it ebay or whatever. I think Radiant Silvergun cost me $125 not that long ago. So being that you're into shooters, you should seriously consider the Saturn. It was specifically designed for these kind of games. Peace.

Really enjoyed the video and also the Thunderforce IV one. Keep up the good work.

I've been um and arring on paying approximately $200AUD for a Japanese copy of MUSHA for a while. It's hard to justify sometimes.

Nice video. On SNES it's worth having a look at Super Aleste (aka Space Megaforce) and Super Swiv (aka Firepower 2000). The latter is very old school and looks pretty generic but it has a certain something I find very enjoyable, and you can play it two ways - with helicopter and jeep - and it does make a difference. Has a 2 player option as well.

I've only recently got into Megadrive shooting games. Picked a couple up on import - Hellfire and Twin Hawk - both nice games. The MD also got a very nice version of Fantasy Zone called Super Fantasy Zone. I really like the look of Musha but the price is a major problem.

Yeah I take a similar approach to you. But in my case, I have a goal of collecting every Sega Genesis game, so I'm kind of screwed in that regard haha...

Thanks! I appreciate it! And yeah, the ONLY way I was able to justify the purchase of MUSHA was because I traded in my Wii-U :P

Thanks! There will be another one out next month for sure!

Great video, loved the presentation.

My only gripe was that you kept banging on about good deals. This affects nobody in a positive light except yourself. It could potentially stop people buying a game you recommend simply because you got it for less than they did. These games are old, if people want to play them after watching your video they are either going to have to pay the going rate at the time or wait for months years for a lucky strike.

MUSHA is a title I bought that I didn't like that much. I must try it again. It seemed random, the music was too thrashy.

The impressive title there for me was Rtype 3. That looked stunning.

Where do you get repro RR:R2 carts from then?
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

You know, that IS a good point. I never looked at it that way before... Although I was hoping that the video would be more inspiring in the fact that you CAN get good deals on expensive games if you go to cons and look around enough. But I totally get what you are saying.

As for Rendering Ranger, (and maybe you missed this, it was a LONG video after all lol) while I was talking about it I showed the website I got it from. It's called Flashback Entertainment. There is also another repro website that sells it as well, I think for $10 less. I chose Flashback because their turn around time was a bit quicker. Although I'm assuming a lot of these repros are made to order and thus take a couple weeks minimum to produce.

And yeah, R-Type 3 is a gem. It's a really expensive game, but as my video shows, if you look around, go to the cons and keep searching, you can find it for a "reasonable" price.

Thanks for watching! I appreciate the feedback!
