Anime Shmups

Post by wgogh »

This is a thing right? When I say that I've been playing shooters, I sometimes got asked about anime based titles, and this happened more times then I would expect. Someone knows any good beside the Macross ones? Thinking about it, I got curious.

(hope that I didnt wrote something that could be on a engrish arcade text)

U.N. Squadron (Area 88), arguably improved on the SNES (manga rather than anime, though). I for one find its character designs problematic.

The recent licensed shmups thread mentioned quite a few.

There is - there's also a freeware doujin Strike Witches game, and it's not too bad.

Of course, if you get into the boatloads of doujin titles featuring various anime characters you'll never see the end of it.

I've heard of the strike witches game on 360 many times, but never heard anything about it. Good or bad? I'm never afraid to search for hidden gems in a genre like this.

There are Bullet Heaven reviews of both the 360 version and the PSP version if you're interested.

The five wildly different Macross games are quite the handful already.

Anime licensed?... To be honest probably only the Marcross ones spring to mind.

Ones that anime types will like I would probably point them to espaguldas or castle of shigamis... Again katana maybe.....i'd presume any loli fan is already all over deathsmiles...

Something character based that keeps the anime influence going.

There are of course countless games that slap an anime-like bit of art work on a cover or intro and then never really come back to it - souky and blazing star for example.

I'd just try and recommend them a good game rather than an anime one tbh... Progear and mushimesama for example would probably be up an anime fans street thematically.

Are the Spriggan games not based on the anime/manga?

I always figured they were, but right now I can't find anything backing that up.

Obligatory mention of Tekkaman Blade. Half shmup, half fighting game, completely terrible, glorious fun nonetheless.

There's also Mazinger Z. Haven't played it myself, but it doesn't look too shabby. Kiaidan 00 is not based on a license as far as I know, but it fits snugly with the theme regardless.

Nope, they just have the same name. The only Spriggan game based on the manga is the PSX one.

I had! It is a Banpresto game. I thought it was pretty good.
Used to sing along the music from Stage 2 while playing, which is a instrumental version of the anime opening

I came across a doujin shmup based on the Fate/ series, but I forget what it was called.
