Some sites will just zip up the entire GoodNES set for a given game [so, good dumps, bad dumps, hacks].
In that case, you want the one with a "[!]" in the file name [which means it's the verified good dump], anything with "[h1]" or similar is definitely hacked.
Yup. I've had the full GoodNES set sitting in my test folder for several years now, never encountered anything remotely odd with [!] stuff.
Even Naked Punch Out works fine and dandy! Though the sprite editing is kinda lame. Glass Joe's cock looks all fucked up during his intro, the shaft breaks up and the head flickers like crazy. What can you expect...
Besides, even if you get a bad rip of something expensive, what's the cost exactly? You could struggle for years buying costly carts/discs only to burn your house down like Chris Chan. Or a gigantic fuckoff sinkhole could randomly open up under the delivery van a block from your house and that's that. This is a harsh era for upstart collectors lacking disposable funds, but far from that for internet-savvy gamers willing to compromise a little. In your case, perhaps compromise means making do with rips for now, and getting legits later on when you've got more resources. Assuming you don't discover other, more conventionally adult vices by then and lose interest in this hobby! Only time will tell on that score! :O
Most important thing is to
play some fucken games. 3: Lamenting on this forum won't do nothing. For originals, I second giving
Bulk Slash a go, it's a joyously entertaining 3D arcade action game that's a cinch to dive into.
Hyper Duel is technically a port, but the vastly smoother-handling Saturn mode annihilates MAME and will make Macross-loving Thunder Force fans cum rainbows.
Shinrei Jusatsushi Taromaru is an idiosyncratic masterpiece of sidescrolling action ala 2010 Street Fighter and Alien Soldier, but like them takes adjusting to so FFS don't cry if you don't get it at first! Consult your fellow Ryukenden soldier's humble writings on the fine art of
telekinetically-induced mass explosive rupturing. ;3
Enjoy yourself. It's later than you think.
