Pokemon Go
Pokemon Go
Anyone check this out yet? I downloaded it this morning and I'm already hooked.
I kind of have an unfair advantage since I work in the loop directly across from the sears tower, so I have my building, the sears tower, and two other landmarks nearby to replenish on items. also captured 8 pokemon already!
for those who don't know what it is... it's a real-life pokemon game using your android or apple cell phones w/ gps tracking and camera. depending where you are you can capture gyms once you're level 5 (one of my buddies just captured the denver train station). If you walk around by different landscapes (lakes, oceans, etc..) you get the chance to find water pokemon, at nighttime you can find more "ghostly" ones, etc. When you actually find them, you have to capture the pokemon using your camera and touch controls to launch your pokeball. There really isn't any battling yet as far as I can tell, but I'm only level 4.

My smartphone is complete shit and doesn't even run the most basic functions properly
So I don't even bother. It does sound kinda fun though with people getting to claim locales as their gyms.

Don't worry about it. You can travel from the Milky Way to Andromeda and back 1500 times before the sun explodes.

It has microtransactions, unfortunately.

supposedly the microtransactions don't really benefit your character much (at least in level). or so I've been told...

Started messing with this a bit this morning, but right now the servers are so hammered I can't even log in.
Re: Pokemon Go
servers were down for me throughout the rest of the morning and most of the afternoon, but I just got back in not too long ago. just in time for my commute home >:)
I noticed at the nearest gym that someone has a pokemon with 325 CP already.... no idea how that's even possible but I'll need to try for it within the next day or two.

Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I'm not seeing the problem.
Except that it's not released in the UK yet. :/

Re: Pokemon Go
It's not showing up in the UK iTunes store at least. I know there's a way to get it from the US one, but seems like a lot of effort when the wait is probably just a couple days.
Maybe Android users can already get it, though.

Re: Pokemon Go
on my walk to work I sat down at the flamingo today to fight for the flamingo gym and I saw someone else sitting down at the same landmark fighting too which was awkward but cool. I found out that there's a few dozen people in my office playing it too and since I work across from the sears tower, people keep throwing incense at our building and across the street which has a hefty goldmine for new pokemon.
level 7 now with around 40 pokemon and no claimed gyms

Re: Pokemon Go
Counted 11 people playing this today on a walk to the park. It's just crazy. Really hope the school where I teach is a gym or something.

Agreed. Smartphone games (besides Deemo) are fucking dog shit. I've even played around 30 levels in Candy Crush and somehow wasn't addicted and spent exactly $0.00 on it.Strider77 wrote:You know the forum is heading into the shitter when we have threads on Pokemon smart phone games... that are serious.

I've been loving it and since I travel a lot the concept of augmented reality phone games is addicting.

Re: Pokemon Go
I get that you walk around town and capture Pokemon with your camera, but whats the end-game here? Can you "win"? I just don't understand the point... Bragging rights that you have more Pokemon than the 9 year old sitting on the bus next to you?
Re: Pokemon Go
I like the concept and I played Ingress a while back, but it looks like I'll have to update my phone's OS if I'm to give this a shot.
As for smartphone games in general, my favorite of the ones I've played is simply NetHack.

Doesn't seem to be an actual goal, although I suppose most people would consider controlling gyms or catching em' all (tm) to be a goal to strive towards.rancor wrote:I get that you walk around town and capture Pokemon with your camera, but whats the end-game here? As far as I can tell, for every pokemon you have assigned guarding an allied gym, you can collect 10 premium currency coins every 24 hours. Besides that the game doesn't explicitly try to motivate you to do anything in particular.
I just came back from visiting the Ocean City boardwalk, and turns out you can't go a handful of steps without walking into another pokestop, so after a short time I had filled my bag to max capacity with pokeballs and potions.
Gym battles, besides being braindead (just tap the screen as fast as you can), seem bugged; most of the time the game either refuses to remove the last sliver of HP from an opponent, or boots me back to the gym summary screen within seconds of starting.
As it is with the amount of content (gen 1 pokemon only, no direct player battling or trading, no random group events/raids as promised in the trailer, etc.), either the game is essentially in a rushed beta state, or the trailer was filled with lies.

Re: Pokemon Go
Apparently the brazilian server isn't online yet, but this isn't the kind of game you can play over here. Walking around with your phone out in the open is a sure way to get robbed.
Re: Pokemon Go
I'm hearing people outside my window yelling to another group of guys if they've seen Pikachu around here, or something like that.
They sound about 20 years old. Pretty awesome just to admire the strangeness from afar.

I forget what country, but I heard there is a big warning to parents who let their kids play this.
Apparently kids are walking out into freeways looking for pokeman lol.
