What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
PSP ... It has shmups with tate mode. And I believe all playstation1 shmups even ones with tate mode play on it. Just got the 3000 model, wow!
(Wonderswan and Lynx have tate games as well)

Are there any worthy games on the Lynx?Wonderswan and Lynx have tate games as well
Did Nintendo made any more shumps?Solar Striker is a strong contender for the best first-party Nintendo shmup's crown.
Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Arcus Odyssey for the Genesys (I love that game). Close enough?PowerofElsydeon wrote:Can anyone recomend me a game in Smash Tv vein even if it s not on a handheld format

Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Please help me with this shitMy Game Boy games are worrying me![]()
When I ve bought Battletoads it worked perfectly but now it refuses to let get into level 3 because it glitches out and frezes before I have the chance I ve tried to blow into the cart and restart the game frequently but it always frezes before stage 2 boss
I tried to that thing with the Q tip but it didn t work![]()
If I somehow fucked up the cartbridge how should I fix it
Or maybe the Q tip cleaning is supposed to be used on Games that refuse to start up and the problem lies inside the cartbridge?
Or maybe is there a problem with my gba sp?
And Super Rc Pro Arm; Operation C ;Turtles Back to the Sewers and Solar Striker are also hard to convince to let me play from start to finish
So how can my Marios and Tetris work perfectly well?
Help me
Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Don't blow on cartridges. It won't fix anything, and the moisture on your breath isn't great for metal parts!

Apocalypse for PSX (I think analogue controls must be enabled manually with a DualShock's "Analog" button every time it boots), Gauntlet Dark Legacy for PS2, 'Cube & Xbox (set the controls to "ROBOTRON" mode in options and DISABLE auto-attack), Alien Syndrome PS2 remake (the 2007 Wii game does this kind of controls in a way, but it gave me first impression too poor to recommend it yet).wgogh wrote:Arcus Odyssey for the Genesys (I love that game). No such controls there, but remarkably little is wrong with The Red Star for PS2, Xbox (leaked) and PSP - shared screen works a treat in 2 player. Also, in case the licence doesn't make you cringe, X-Men Legends II: Rise of Apocalypse does shared screen for up to four, which was rather unusual on PC in its time (the PC version holds up in high resolutions, too).
Also, what little I played of Crimsonland (old free-/shareware version) seems like re-imagining of Smash TV, in hindsight (it's been a while, mind).

I forgot about Gauntlet Dark Legacy! One of my favorite games (really), and i believe to be close to Smash TV. Almost always played with the Valkyria (The only one there Ive never played is "Apocalypse", but i know that is some Bruce Willis shooter)Obiwanshinobi wrote:Apocalypse for PSX (I think analogue controls must be anabled manually with a DualShock's "Analog" button every time it boots), Gauntlet Dark Legacy for PS2, 'Cube & Xbox (set the controls to "ROBOTRON" mode in options and DISABLE auto-attack), Alien Syndrome PS2 remake (the 2007 Wii game does this kind of controls in a way, but it gave me first impression too poor to recommend it yet).wgogh wrote:Arcus Odyssey for the Genesys (I love that game). Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
THE Bruce Willis shooter, to be exact.
Phalanx on GBA is of the point-blanking auto-fire rate somewhere near Gradius Galaxies/Advance, that is - feeling faster than such auto-fire in your average shmup feels to me. Mind you - not quite as devastating as in the latter (some enemies are damage soakers even when approached in this way).
I find this version of Phalanx (difficulty Hard, stock 1) just the right dose of horizontal shmupping when played on GBA SP.

I think Dynamite Deka dude wasn't officially John McClane, either.

Typically, putting someone's likeness and voice in game takes their agreement and costs money (if you wanna profit from it), so it isn't all that surprising.

Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Why not make (or better yet bump) a Game Boy thread in Off Topic? Toshinden is a fighting game, and like this subforum's label says, we're meant to stay on-topic.
As for Strikers II, we've got an entire Strategy subforum for such questions. If you're serious about getting an answer, searching around the ST/GD threads there (or making a RQ thread if you don't find anything) is a far surer option than bumping this thread.
Just trying to be helpful.
I'd happily give you answers about GB Toshinden (as I did with the other non-STGs you asked about) and Strikers II, but I've not played the former and I'm a noob at the latter.

Bangai-O Spirits on the DS was a ton of fun. It had a really nice level designer as well.
Contra 4 also on the DS was an amazing run and gun game.
I wouldn't consider this one a best, but Nanostray is another I could name as long as I've got DS on the brain. I remember picking it up for $5 used and it was certainly worth it at that price. It looked very nice but it didn't click with me for whatever reason. Never tried the sequel.

Re: What are the Best Handheld Shooters
Space Invaders Extreme 2 represent! I feel it's overlooked even among the shmups community, and basically the best x-axis movement, shooting gallery style shmup ever. Where Extreme 1 felt too fragmented, with frequent interruptions to an often trivial bonus game, in 2 there is this glorious interweaving of the bonus game on the top screen while the main game continues below.
The color chaining makes you play in a very controlled and methodical way, yet your actions are also constantly informed by changing conditions around you and longer term goals (whether to squeeze out as many bonus rounds as possible and risk invaders getting closer to the bottom of the screen, whether to shoot invaders when color-neutral so they don't throw off your chain plan, what kind of bingo route to shoot for, what kind of weapon to hold based on the bonus formations, and so on) -- very high tension, with big risks and rewards that you elaborately build up for yourself.
It combines all these elements remarkably well in a way that gives Space Invaders a fresh face while magnifying that paradigm's strengths. The design and proportions of the game also feel well-suited to the DS hardware (often not the case with handheld ports and games based on console designs), though arguably it's too much of a slow-burn game for short handheld sessions, but there's individual stage scoring and time attack (which also make you approach the stages differently).
