Lots of win in this thread!

I have two achievements to post here:

After hearing about Vludi playing DOJ BL i decided to spend some time playing it again and I managed to get my first 2-miss DOJ BL 1CC, finally of getting the 2-miss loop requirement. The deaths were on stage 3 and the start of the stage 5 boss fight. Unfortunately, my second loop wasn't that good and I died in 2-3 with a bad score of 95 mil.

Also in a practice run I no missed the second loop of Donpachi about 2 and a half weeks ago. The run stared at 2-1 with a death at the end of the first loop to lower rank.
Spoiler

Now why can't I ever be even close to this good in an actual run? ;_;
Congrats, reaching 2-3 in your first try of loop 2 sounds pretty good. Also awesome Donpachi run, even if it's practice.

I recently cleared Raiden DX on Novice mode (5 stages), it's pretty much 2/3 of a Raiden game. I like these games but have some problems with the side-scroll, it's too wide. Still want to beat the real deal some day.

That wasn't the first time I've made it to loop 2 and that also wasn't the first time I've made it to 2-3. First two times I made it to the second loop I died on 2-1 lol.

I kicked off the week with a 1-credit clear of Area 88. I worked up to the clear pretty quickly - maybe 6 or 7 hours in all. That's the fastest arcade 1cc ever for me, I think I was inspired by the shmupmeet last weekend! I had played the SNES version back in high school, and I vaguely remembering strafing convoys of trucks over and over to grind for money.

Some favorite things:
- The soundtrack. (Someone online pointed out that Area 88 player select / round briefing music sounds an awful lot like Chocolate Rain...)
- Stage 2, the battle with the stealth bomber inside a thunderstorm. Lovely colors and great use of parallax scrolling
- Final level is a great take on the "dismantle and fly inside a giant ship" style of boss battle
- Being able to save up money for harder levels is a satisfying mechanic

Thanks, everyone! Video is up now. Lots of close calls/risky stunts, particularly one turret in stage 5 misses me by a pixel or so. I bombed a lot before and during the sixth boss since I couldn't get any reliable strategy working against him and had to enter the final stage with a single bomb as a result, yet managed to hold out until the missile segment where I screwed up and lost my first life. It's not a problem if you die there with enough resources since you're almost at the final boss, but it's fatal anywhere before in the stage since you're going to have to waste a ton of resources to limp through. Very glad that I could get it. :)

Espgaluda 2 1CC!
Took 3 credits after coming home from Stunfest and feeling that the clear should come easy.
Made two stupid mistakes so cleared with no resources at all.
Feels good though. Fun game.

Despite getting somewhat shafted with the final boss milking after just three times I'm overall pleased that I finally motivated myself to clear Parodius Da! Managed to keep the bell chain all the way to stage 8 and got my routes and strategies to work (although stage 9 was unusually rough) just fine. Really would've wished to get those additional 200,000 points from the final boss and maybe even end the run in 2-3 instead of 2-1, but that penguin had a different opinion on that matter...

Everyone's constantly bullying me. "Go for the second loop in Zing Zing Zip!" "Go for the WR in Sonic Wings!" "Clear the second loop in Parodius Da!" "When are you finally going to play games like Giga Wing, Dodonpachi or Battle Garegga?" You guys are a bunch of meanies.

Just pushing you to succeed where we failed. :P

Any particular reason you used 15Hz autofire (at least I think that's 15, correct me if I'm wrong) rather than 30Hz? Is there anything where 20Hz or 30Hz would be advantageous?

When are you going to get the Asuka & Asuka world record? I've been trying to get that thing since I was a little wee lad but I always execute my secret "wake-up" strat too late after falling asleep after about five minutes of play. When I wake up the game is cleared but my is score low. I've heard rumors that the WR holder can stay awake for an entire six minutes and can perform a frame and pixel perfect wake-up strat.

Pardon, my bad. I was kinda shocked by the atrocious soundtrack of the arcade game, by the way, the SFC port I'm familiar with has at least middling music, the arcade game sounds horrible if you ask me.

IN stands for Imperishable Night, right? My knowledge of computer shmups is next to non-existent, the only one I ever played was Chronos, and I really didn't want to, but someone had to find out whether the scoring in that one is busted or not. Didn't went to a great start there. I'm certainly interested to close my knowledge gaps in that area, but who knows when. May I ask why you prefer this particular chapter of the series? Also: great username, did you plan on using it from the start or did it occur to you after you unsuccesfully tried one before that?
Shepardus wrote:Any particular reason you used 15Hz autofire (at least I think that's 15, correct me if I'm wrong) rather than 30Hz? Is there anything where 20Hz or 30Hz would be advantageous?
Yes, that's 15Hz. The reason is that you don't get any benefit out of higher autofire (at least not as far as I know, perhaps it's different with some of the other characters) but when you play with 15Hz it's easier to just get a single ripple laser out when gently pressing the button instead of several at once. I sometimes only want to shoot once in order to keep a bell in sight and I like to play with as little buttons as possible (I even mapped the shot button and the missiles to the same button), that's why I chose that.

Sure looks like an amazing game! I'll clear it and Twin Eagle one day only to find out which one is worse.

Yeah the sound is horrible. SNES version is way better.

Also, you're like the only person who is playing these random old unloved games seriously except me. :P

correct!
Perikles wrote:May I ask why you prefer this particular chapter of the series?
I would like to say because of the great scoring system - and the scoring is fantastic with and incredible amount of depth, countless possible optimizations and high intensity during a run - but that exists in others of the Touhou games and is more so the thing that makes me still play the game after many hours sunk into it than what drew me to it at first. The reason why I played it at first was mostly because of better practice options compared to 6 and 7 (stage- and spellpractice [spells are certain bosspatterns] as opposed to only stagepractice in the other two) while the new engine combined with gimmicks I didn't like so much in the later games kinda turned me off from those. I also have to admit I liked the long deathbomb window that made the game much more consistent for a beginner that's not good at using their bombs.
So basically I picked it up above others mostly for random reasons and later chose it because of the great and in depth scoring, though at that point the scale might have already been tilted in INs favor and maybe I would have prefered PCB (Perfect Cherry Blossom) if I had played that at first. Let's leave it at that to not make this too lengthy.

Perikles wrote:Also: great username, did you plan on using it from the start or did it occur to you after you unsuccesfully tried one before that?
I used it on twitch because I couldn't use the one I wanted to, without the purpose of doing much more than accessing the chat (not to spam Kappa, but to ask a streamer about their game!!!). Then at some point someone asked me to stream and I didn't feel like making a new account for that so I kinda just rolled with that one and kept using it in other communities (i.e. here) aswell for consistencies sake.
tl;dr I did not plan on using it from the start.

Congrats Moonwalker, also that's a lovely cab.

I cleared Fantasy Zone 1 and 2 (remake) recently. Quite fun games, the first one starts easy but gets difficult near the end, also the scrolling is a bit messy. Fantasy Zone 2 remake from M2 is fantastic and improves the original in every way, you can make the game easy or hard depending on the routes you take (bright side/dark side), however if you play the easy stage you will get the bad ending, i love these details.

Indeed, you're clearing quite a lot of games lately, Vludi, keep up the fine work!

Managed to beat the obscure Rezon myself, an Irem epigone from Allumer (of Zing Zing Zip fame!), on one life. Even though I'm disappointed by the game itself I'm very pleased with the run. I managed to clear the game before, yet wanted to conquer it without deaths as you get 50,000 points per life in stock at the end of the game which is massive. Since this game is short and I had to play it for quite a few times I got a neat route for the entire game, including some deliberately risky manoeuvres for a few more points. I miss a handful of enemies here and there (even one right at the beginning of the game!), but I'm overall glad with how this turned out. The chase after the parasitic worms in stage 2 was actually enjoyable unlike a lot of the rest of the game.

It's such a shame, really. It definitely had the potential to be a decent game. The concept sounds promising enough: take the time-proven Irem formula, tweak the gameplay mechanics a little bit and address one of the very few problems (checkpoint milking). No second loop, either, but a pretty high difficulty from the second half onward (I dare say Rezon is harder than a 2-ALL of the first R-Type, unfortunately not for good reasons). Too bad they messed various aspects up (I mention a few in the video description). And Jesus Christ, that "soundtrack". Goddamn.

I concede in all fairness that some of my issues might stem from the MAME emulation, it looks like the actual arcade game has a lot more slowdown which may or may not have been intentional in order to reduce the difficulty. The fourth boss is one of the worst enemies I've ever had the displeasure to fight in a shmup, and it doesn't help that you have to react so fast to all the nonsense he throws at you. I also acknowledge that the checkpoint recovery outside from the beginning of the final stage is feasible, even the default pea shooter is surprisingly strong. It turns a hard game into a very hard game, but it's definitely doable. Additionally, the short length (6 stages, 20 minutes) helps a lot to reduce the frustration.

Would've loved to recommend this one, but I think most people will end up hating it. I adore well-made memorizers and feel fairly lukewarm about Rezon, although it was fun figuring out consistent paths for the final two stages, getting screwed for the wrong reasons was not, though.
