TRP-STGT 2016 Planning

Post by trap15 »

I want to run another STGT. You guys all want me to run another STGT (right? right.)

When is the best set of 5 weeks? I don't feel particularly under pressure to get it started soon, so just throw out good sets.

Did you like the mini-teams from last time? Did you like a previous gimmick more? What sort of gimmicks would you like to see? What was good about previous STGTs and what was bad about them?

Game choice will definitely be less kuso this time around.

I don't know about weeks but I'm down with it

I enjoyed the team set up from last time, but it was my first STGT (well, aside from the doujin one a summer or two ago), so I don't know of any other set ups.

More ways to earn points besides highest score could be cool. My idea was a point for the highest score with each ship (but only one such point per person, to encourage team to do stuff, and also encourage random people to aim for some kind of goal when they have no hope of reaching the main #1 spot), but that's only for games with multiple ships.

Basically, some kind of wacky shit.

I'm fine with any time not in the next two months.

I agree with this. The "technical bonus" concept from last year was cool but has more potential for crazy and/or interesting things beyond simply score challenges (though I can't think of any examples right now). I'm also torn over stage versus score ranking; maybe score ordering with a stage-based tech bonus would have been more interesting than stage order w/ a score-based tech bonus.

Yeah I don't like stage over score unless the games are way easier to complete. Last one was basically survival for the win and ignore scoring for the majority of entrants.

I don't necessarily agree with the multiple ships on different tables idea as it gives Trap15 way more work to do and he already clearly puts a lot of time and effort into this.

I do agree that stage over score is not necessarily the way to go.

Also make us play Dimahoo for a week.

Turn this on its head - adjust scores for how far they aren't in the game. Take two people with a score of 2,000,000 each - one ended on stage 4, the other stage 6. Stage 4 wins because he's doing better at scoring if not survival.

Something like

Score x (1-.05*Stage Reached)

I'm in favour of playing obscure games - granted, probably none of the participants played Sand Scorpion or Zing Zing Zip after the STGT, but it was a great opportunity to learn more about quirky titles. It also serves in creating an even ground for the agon since it's highly unlikely that anyone will have a lot of experience with games such as these beforehand. And let's not forget that whining, caterwauling and scolding is just as much fun as the actual process of playing is!

I would love to see at least one, preferably two (or even more) horizontal shooters with proper terrain, though. A balanced blend of frantic verticals and methodical horizontals would be ideal in my book. Or verticals that incorporate environments/obstacles (think Dragon Spirit & Saber or Image Fight).

Stage over score can certainly work with some games, with other games not so much. I thought it worked fine with the selection of games last time except for GunNail. It should also be noted that it didn't have a huge impact on the standings, it changed a couple of places here and there, nothing drastic. I personally feel like a clear should be rewarded somehow but other arguments geared towards scoring are just as valid. It's fine either way.

I think the game selection should be balanced, at least it has one kuso and one good games.

If it wasn't for stage over score, I would have passed pazaizy in week 2 giving me 1 extra point, and that means I would have won STGT. :P

Hell yes I'd love another STGT!

I was very satisfied with teams for last STGT, and I might start my own team this year.

I'd like score over stage as I have never competed in a scoring STGT before. It would be good to play more challenging games because if players were having trouble getting far they could focus on scoring, although more challenge would be good for stage over score as well.

Some ideal devs I think of are Video System, Jaleco, Kaneko, Namco, and obviously NMK. For diversity with a slight sacrifice in quality you could pick something by Dooyong or Afega (Korean devs), and if you secretly hate us you could make us play Ghost Pilots or Gulf War II

One thing I did a little in previous ones that I didn't do last year is a week with non-default settings. Was that interesting to anyone and is there any strong opinion on it? I thought it was a bit interesting to play a game in a fairly different way, perhaps more worthwhile doing on games that are popular (so that even experienced players need to learn new things about the game). I think I have my game list already, it's mostly truly high quality games.

I liked the special bonus thing last year. Gave a less skilled player, like me, something to shoot for.

Has there ever been a single screen shooter like Pleiads, Galaxian etc. in STGT?
What about a single life run?

I'm not interested in single screen shooters for the most part, so don't expect one to show up in any I run. Only ones I particularly like are Space Bomber and Gaplus. For single life runs, I think it's mostly a waste of time for players unless there's something particularly wrong with normal 1CC (obscene checkpoint milking, etc), so I'd avoid doing that too.

Yeah non-default settings was another idea I was thinking too. Because you're gonna run out of good games after awhile and maybe you already have, but with non-default you can just put a new spin on an old favorite.

I'm fine with whenever, but ESA is at 23.7, so I wouldn't have much time to play that week.

Popping in to throw in the idea of "ichimenbanchou"-like technical bonuses where one tries to get as many points as they can on the first stage.

Of course this also implies that a game's scoring system has more depth than just "destroy everything on the stage and discover all of the secrets" (then again, I ran into a random Arkanoid ichimenbanchou tourney on YouTube a couple of weeks back, so I suppose it could happen on anything, idk)

My single gripe with STGT (If my word is worth anything) is the technical bonuses.

I always felt they should have been actual challenges that add more to your playthrough, not just a "you gotta be this good" sort of cap.

For example, refusing to use bombs or game mechanics during a stage or boss.
-Clearing X with a certain weapon.
-Refraining from power ups (during X)
-Pacifism (during X)

Lets say hypothetical shmup bosses time out after 180 seconds and take about 30 to kill. The hypothetical shmup challenge could be to be pacifist during Boss 3 or whatnot until it dies. Just an example.

PS: Can I nominate Cho Aniki
