Sega's Galaxy Force [arcade] vs Hudson's Battle Ace [sgx]

Post by parallaxscroll2 »

I thought this would be an interesting little comparison - Sega's Galaxy Force from 1988 (arcade screenshots) and Hudson Soft's Battle Ace from 1989 for the NEC SuperGrafx, the graphically more powerful version of the PC-Engine / TurboGrafx-16, released only in Japan.

I recall at the time, having high hopes for the SuperGrafx. For those who are old enough and who followed the early 16-bit system market, we always refer to the system as ill-fated. It was. But it was also very much a rushed launch in Japan. November 1989, with one game along side it, Battle Ace. There wouldn't be another SuperGrafx game out in Japan until April 90.

Galaxy Force II itself, was apparently in the works for SuperGrafx but canceled.

BTW, here's what the actual Megadrive-Genesis version looked like:

Played through most versions of Galaxy Force II; arcade, genesis, saturn, 3ds, and Battle Ace and found Hudson's first game for the SuperGrafx to be really boring an unimpressive. Clearly Galaxy Force was the more memorable game.

amazing
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

The comparison fails because the different perspectives makes them play too differently. I'd say Battle Ace's closest relative is Air Diver.

Definitely a good point about the perspectives. I just remember EGM describing Battle Ace as a cross between After Burner and Galaxy Force.
Anyway, here's Air Diver.
