Inglorious Space - A Tabletop Shmup

Post by mainfinger »

Hi all!

My wife and I have spent the last year and a half making a tabletop shmup called Inglorious Space (hopefully this still falls in the "development" forum. If not, sorry and feel free to move it).

It's a semi-cooperative game for 1-4 players (yes, there's a solo score attack mode) with lots of fun nods to older shmups like Galaga, R-Type, Thunder Force, Star Soldier, etc. You need the other players to help you survive to the end, but you're also trying to get a higher score than them which results in a lot of backstabbing as the game progresses.

Each character has a unique ability that sets them apart from the other players and the enemy spawning rules make each playthrough unique. We're trying to get a small print run funded on kickstarter right now. Check out our quick stop motion pitch video or, if you want more mechanical details, watch the How to Play video on the kickstarter page.

We just got back from showing it off at GameStorm and we're really excited about it!

I am greatly intrigued by this!

I'm very new to this genre of game, and have only played a couple, but I don't think anyone has ever heard of this.

I hope you'll do well!

Thanks! We're hoping to build an audience with it and expand it down the line.

Ha! That sounds interesting. I remember seeing a tabletop rally game that's meant to be played solo for time attack, I forget its name at the moment.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

Yeah, looks really rad! Good luck with this.

But we don't like our shmups having energy meters...

Within this context, though, it's probably more practical than a lives mechanic.

And health can be done right as well. All the ESP games by cave treat the lives more like health, in that you do not respawn, but stay where you are when you get hit. Same for Guwange, which even has actual health as well. It can work.

Astebreed even has a regenerating health mechanic and it works fine.

I hope this doesn't sound like a dumb question, but...

Will we be able to play as bosses in the future, kind of like a Genestealer versus Spess Mehreens Space Hulk campaign?

Good question, S20-TBL.

We're still working out the details of how we want to implement bosses for expansions so we're not ready to reveal that just yet :)
