General youtube shmup thread.
Re: General youtube shmup thread.
So here's a nice Strikers 1945 II superplay I found by searching "Strikers 1945 II superplay" on YouTube (I know, such amazing search engine skills). Here's part 2 of the same video, and here's one for Strikers 1999 found in a similar manner. These have been around for a while so chances are some of you have seen these already.
But anyway, what I really wanted to say was, what the hell happens at 6:10 in the Strikers II video? It looks like he dies and respawns as the boss is timing out but somehow doesn't lose a life or any power levels and somehow collects two powerup items for points and an extra bomb from dying? This must be some sort of glitch but does anybody here know how it works?
Edit: Rewatching it, it looks like he's timing his death so that it happens after all the bullets from the time-out pattern have passed and the game is about to move the player up off the top of the screen. The game probably gets confused by that...
Edit 2: He does it again on 2-2 and 2-3, and I'm pretty sure that's exactly what's happening.

Re: General youtube shmup thread.
I assume its a rank control trick? I'm not sure how it works however but looks just like a timing thing like you say.Shepardus wrote:So here's a nice Strikers 1945 II superplay I found by searching "Strikers 1945 II superplay" on YouTube (I know, such amazing search engine skills). Psikyo games tend to do weird things when they "assume" the fight is over. In Strikers II there is this glitch, where you "die" without losing a life or your current bomb stock (the rank seems unchanged too). In Strikers 99, you get the silly "double tech bonus" tricks.
Re: General youtube shmup thread.
You miss the boss kill score so it only makes sense doing it in the early bosses where you can actually earn slightly more from the items spawned from the fake death. I think the early bosses are all worth 10k which is the same as an bomb item, so if you manage to grab one of the power ups too you'll end up in the lead. The bottom line is that you shouldn't do it.
Re: General youtube shmup thread.
Thing is some of the WR scores have been achieved using that method. Works kinda differently on original Strikers 1945, though cannot remember what happens.Erppo wrote:You miss the boss kill score so it only makes sense doing it in the early bosses where you can actually earn slightly more from the items spawned from the fake death. Re: General youtube shmup thread.
Yeah, it seems like a pretty risky trick for a very minor gain, so it's only worth the effort if you really want a WR-level score. Pretty mindblowing to see though.Erppo wrote:You miss the boss kill score so it only makes sense doing it in the early bosses where you can actually earn slightly more from the items spawned from the fake death. Only sort-of related: Your reward for watching the entire 6 hour+ counterstop of Fire Shark? You learn that on loops 9 and 10, if you let the last plane formation of the last stage (10) shoot you down at the bottom of the screen, you get a double loop bonus (where the vast majority of your points come from). It's the current loop plus the next one. Insane. Not sure if it works on previous loops.

Good watch for the most part but that final boss was plain silly with the bullet-hell.

I made a playlist of an amazing type B DOJ WL superplay. The run is only about 104 mil off of the world record. Here it is:

A trouvaille of the most amazing kind: a human being takes on the second Penalty Area in Image Fight - and conquers it. Wow. Just wow.

Note that BGR-44 is infamously known for cheating so this might be a TAS maybe. Still a great run though. The Armchair General wrote:I made a playlist of an amazing type B DOJ WL superplay. The run is only about 104 mil off of the world record. Here it is:

This is the best. I was on the edge of my seat toward the end of the level and almost lost it during that crazy final stretch!Perikles wrote:A trouvaille of the most amazing kind: a human being takes on the second Penalty Area in Image Fight - and conquers it. Wow. Just wow.

Re: General youtube shmup thread.
I made a Donpachi perfect 2-3 (NMNB) video [JPN ver.]
As some of you might know, I did a perfect run of 2-3 in Donpachi two months ago. However, that was in the USA version of the game and this run was done in the Japanese version of the game. This makes a HUGE difference because the bullet speed and density in the USA version is much lower on high ranks than in the JPN version. If you want proof of this, just watch my previous vid on this stage and then watch this one and you'll notice a massive difference.
This stage isn't that hard once you have a good route. In fact, it only took my an hour and a half to perfect this where as my previous video of this stage took me about 6 hours. Once you have a good route this stage is just a walk in the park...... If everything in said park exploded the second you touched anything
.
Also I'm not perfecting 2-4 and 2-5 on very hard rank because both of those stages are nearly impossible. Also did you know that CAVE made a documentary on the making of Donpachi? Here's a link to the part where they show them designing 2-4 and 2-5 on very hard rank.
Here it is.

I feel really silly now.
Basically, RSQ, the guy who did the Abnormal Reco replay which played in the background of the STGW episode while Gus and Medal rambled about waifus, is now trying to clear 1.5 Ultra with Normal Palm, the weakest character in the game. He's so weak that it was thought that there was no way for him to survive most of the icicle encounters without bombing. I came up with a strat that involved delaying the cancel from another enemy to buy you enough time to destroy the icicle, and he started using that, but after messing around a little today, it turns out that it was completely unneccessary, and if you do it the old way but just stay closer to the icicle like in the video you easily have enough time, and it's actually much more consistent than my strategy too.
I also uploaded the #1 replay from the 360 leaderboard for Mushi 1.5 Original Max a while ago, since I didn't find any video of it.
I think the player is also the WR holder for Futari 1.5 Original.
Apologies for the changing backgrounds, I forgot I had that turned on.

Repost from "I did it" thread, but my 1CC Original Normal run in Eschatos
Been something I had on back burner for years and finally got around to doing it
Did have a couple major derps, but as a first 1CC for this, I'm happy ;D

Side-by-side comparison of a few Futari 1.5 Ultra boss segments with Normal Reco and Abnormal Palm. The ones that are particularly troublesome for Reco.

Re: General youtube shmup thread.
Sorry, this is only half on-topic. I watched your SOTN pacifist run, that was pretty neat. When I play various shmups I often wonder if it's humanly possible to pacifist them. Specifically, older stuff where the bosses time out, like Fire Shark or Gradius 2. Maybe you could attempt some of those?
Re: General youtube shmup thread.
Some people do pacifist runs of Touhou games, and there's also this 0-point clear of Asuka & Asuka. I haven't heard of pacifist runs of other games, though I haven't gone looking for them either.
