Thanks for mention my name.
Also want to say I have noticed Erppo, Naut, Third_Strike and Sapz as very good players in Cave category
interesting, but my great proud not was score in a particular game, kind of shmup or in games of a particular developer. I played diferents kinds of shmups (chain, iten colect, suicide,..) of in diferent systems\joystick (MaMe, xbox, Xbox360, PS2, Dreamcast, PC) with and without superplays, save states, traning mode,...
My proud was don't be limited by nothing! :D

I've always thought that MrMonkeyMan was the best player here as well. Obviously his Ketsui scores are great, but he also has good scores in a bunch of different games. Some people will only play one or two games and achieve great scores; some people might play a ton of different games and get mostly bad/average scores - I think that finding a balance between quality and quantity is most important. Even in Japan, there are guys like SPS, HFD, and Kamui who do amazing things with the one* game they play, but personally, I am more impressed by players like SWY, ISO, and TAC because of their versatility.

*For all I know they might play more than one game, but I've never heard of them playing anything but Ketsui, DOJ/BL and Garegga, respectively.

abschüssig is an exception to everything I just. Now I don't know much about Homura, but I do know that getting the world record in any arcade game is an amazing achievement - especially if it has a complex scoring system (like most modern shumps). Most of us learn strategies by watching others play (and possibly trying to 'dumb down' something if it's too difficult), but he had to create his own strategies and find new optimizations, which is significantly harder. Plus he seems pretty awesome at Espgaluda's arrange mode. :P

As for the topic, I don't want to list a bunch of people and leave anyone out, so I'll just go with MMM as #1. sikraiken could also be the best, but I'd like to see what he could do with a game if he worked on it for months (instead of playing for a week during STGT). I think he could be on the same level as the best non-Japanese players (like WC and IO) if he were dedicated.

Heard that he's done good in loads of games.
Don't know of any except Garegga where he got a 16 mil or something Gain score. Don't remember the exact score.

Recent evidence to keep in mind:

1. 1,862,900 - Plasmo - 2-8 (ALL) - Bf-109 - Arcade (from Strikers '45 high score thread)

1. Rob 3,137,650 2-7 Comanche (from Zero Gunner 2)

Azinth, ShadowWraith, Jaimers, and Sapz have completely blown me away since last you probably checked. These guys are all incredible players more worthy of mention than myself. I haven't played any shmups in a long time, actually, since my cab has been having display issues and bumming me out whenever I so much as think about it.

I might need to reevaluate how to compile this list. Or a mod can lock the thread, either way, this was a thing.

Dunno - maybe something like the top shmup games annual voting, you have a poll for voting top player (or 5) on shmups boards. Perhaps then a link to a nice video highlight/leaderboard there on, or even just a note of some of their accomplishments. Or rather even just a curated list put together by yourself and a few others who take nominations.

I suppose doesn't even have to be ranked per se, just if you have 100s in order to get into the list you have to have x many votes, either that, or if there's a manageable number just list them alphabetically. No matter if it's accurate or not I think it'd be pretty cool to surface + recognize these people... particularly for the more casual people around who don't necessarily keep track of scores/names, but are always interested and appreciative of exemplary play.Hopefully over time any inaccuracies can just be tidied up with feedback.

I think it's still a good idea if anyone can get on top of it...

I'm sorta thinking that if anything worthwhile comes of this, we'd need to discuss a method on deciding how to nominate annual achievements of members.
A yearly "award" ceremony to recognize such accomplishments, with prizes and such would be hilarious. Who has a 3D printer, we'll need some spaceship shaped trophies too

How come none of the big time collectors like SuperPang ever make these lists? He owns every cave game ever made surly he has some commendable scores in a few of them?

Here's how this works:

1) I, the person reading this, am playing shmups the correct way, and this is the only true measurement of real shmups skill.

2) Everyone else is doing it wrong so they don't count.

I dunno. I understand Prometheus's guide to helping people practice, and he's an amazing player, but save states are for cheaters. The Japanese pour out thousands of Yen into a game learning it. People who abuse save states skip the "I have to play the entire game" part and focus on the parts they are shit at".

I mean that's all fine and dandy can't stop it. The people I get a real launh at are SuperPang and company. I own every cave flyer ever released yet I've never been close to posting a score on a single cave game high score thread. But hey please look at my 20 cabs in the galley thread cause I have spent way too much money on stuff I can't enjoy.

Cold.

Superpang 1cc'd collecting - that's his passion and I'm sure he enjoyed it very much - and I know he plays the games too, although perhaps not with the same convictions of others.

Let those guys do their thing. If you want to beat the living shit out of a collector community, Sealed Game Collectors are waiting with pursed lips for a deserved assault and battery.

Killing the replay value of a game is the best way to be a shmup pro player.

we're used to logical fallacies such as "the argument from nature," "the argument from authority" etc.
Here we have the Argument from Japan. If the japanese do it, it must be the right way.

Edit: misunderstood the other point cause i'm a dumb.

In this case, it is the argument from authority.

Except even the best Japanese players recommend using training modes to learn the game. Probably because it's dumb not to.
