I've always thought that MrMonkeyMan was the best player here as well. Obviously his Ketsui scores are great, but he also has good scores in a bunch of different games. Some people will only play one or two games and achieve great scores; some people might play a ton of different games and get mostly bad/average scores - I think that finding a balance between quality and quantity is most important. Even in Japan, there are guys like SPS, HFD, and Kamui who do
amazing things with the one* game they play, but personally, I am more impressed by players like SWY, ISO, and TAC because of their versatility.
*For all I know they might play more than one game, but I've never heard of them playing anything but Ketsui, DOJ/BL and Garegga, respectively.
abschüssig is an exception to everything I just. Now I don't know much about Homura, but I do know that getting the world record in any arcade game is an amazing achievement - especially if it has a complex scoring system (like most modern shumps). Most of us learn strategies by watching others play (and possibly trying to 'dumb down' something if it's too difficult), but he had to create
his own strategies and find
new optimizations, which is significantly harder. Plus he seems pretty awesome at Espgaluda's arrange mode.
As for the topic, I don't want to list a bunch of people and leave anyone out, so I'll just go with MMM as #1. sikraiken could also be the best, but I'd like to see what he could do with a game if he worked on it for months (instead of playing for a week during STGT). I think he could be on the same level as the best non-Japanese players (like
WC and IO) if he were dedicated.
