Telly Programme or Film That Should've Had a Shmup?

Well, it's taken me 11 years but I've finally made it to 100 posts! To 'celebrate' I thought I'd ask an inane question.

I'm sure it's been discussed before but what programme or film do you wish there had been a shmup tie-in for? I was watching Lexx the other day and it really got me wishing for a Lexx shmup. Those little Moths (the ornithopters) are pretty cool. I really mind spending some time flying one around taking on the troops of His Divine Shadow and The Gigashadow!

Star Wars (although I think it already happened somewhere on 8-bit computers). Accidentally watched the last 10 minutes or so of A New Hope last year on a 15'' TV - that is the most seminal piece of movie we owe this kind of games - and, after all those years, it still was brilliant.

Wings (1927) - there is a game, but not a shmup-type shmup. Though Time Pilot comes near. I liked the Flyboys film too (picked up a DVD from bargain bin, having never heard of the title before, so my expectations weren't too high).

Star Wars would work well as a vert I reckon. You could have X-Wing, Y-Wing and A-Wing as your balanced/slow and powerful/fast but weaker ship selection. Missiles/Proton torpedoes for sub-weapons. Super Star Destroyer giant battleship stage? Dip into the Clone Wars for some more colourful locations maybe.

Yes, there are a couple of BSG shmups (actual shmup for J2ME and freeroam shmup for XBLA/PC) but both of them are shit. I'd like to see how it's done nicely a la Diaspora but shmup.

Anyway, Not so much as an entire show, but I think it'd be funny to have a little shmup based on the Mooninites from the Aqua Teen series.

Since people have mentioned Star Wars, how about Star Trek as well? Lot's of content to pull from. I'd especially love taking on a Borg cube.

Oh, I just remembered what I wanted to say here earlier: Dead Leaves. Its breakneck pace and non-stop, over-the-top action already makes it kind of feel like one turned into a movie.

Dead Leaves reminds me, I tend to wonder what shooters (or other arcade staples) should be movies. I've always considered The Raid something of a Donkey Kong movie... Taken likewise for Super Mario Bros ("How high up this crackhead-infested tower block can you get?" and "Sorry Liam Neeson but your daughter is in another Albanian whorehouse!" sum up both perfectly).

I would love a bonafide Guardic Gaiden movie/animation that made full use of the game's wildly varying ecosystems and ludicrously formidable protagonist, while maintaining the relentless narrative of "blow up this artificial planet full of evil shit before it reaches Earth." Metal Storm likewise is a perfect excuse for 70 minutes of cutting-edge mecha acrobatics in a seethingly hostile robolabyrinth.

Shame that the movies based on this sort of all-action stuff tend to suck balls. Double Dragon, Street Fighter, etc etc.

Yeah, quite a few on a range of formats (AC, SFC and SS/PS1, offhand). Only one I can vouch for is Scrambled Valkyrie (SFC), very solid hori with certain resemblances to Gaiares (MD).

Hyper Duel's Saturn Mode is unofficially the best though. :3

I can also vouch for Macross (AC) and Macross II (AC). The latter's absolutely stellar in nearly every way, the former is an enjoyable yet relatively easy romp. Both NMK classics.

Come to think of it, it's pretty strange that there isn't a Star Wars shmup. God knows, they've made Star Wars everything else.

BSG would make for quite a cool setting for a shmup. Flying around protecting the convoy on its journey through the stars with the occasional hyper jump (or whatever they called them in BSG) to strange and alien environments to 'collect' clues to the course to take to reach Earth.

I've been under impression there is at least one (on Atari 2600 or something like that), though there is a possibility I'm thinking of a not licenced game.

Empire Strikes Back on 2600 (which is official) is a Defender-esqe game and the Return of the Jedi game (also official) is also shmup-ish.

Maybe the 1983 coin-op Star Wars cast the shadow too long for most of the gaming industry to seriously try leaving it behind. Sort of like nobody seemed to seriously challenge OutRun on its own turf. I can think of only TWO other arcade-like titles bearing Star Wars licence to reach demographics as wide as you'd expect of an official Star Wars game: Episode I: Racer (I don't know about sales figures, but I suppose at least the PC version got pirated to hell and back) and the Star Wars tables of Pinball FX 2. Come to think of it, those two might have been played by more people than any other Star Wars game.

Elfen Lied, because who doesn't like nude girls on a rampage?

Dino Riders. For god's sake, Dino Riders. It's baffling there has never even been a single licensed video game based on that IP.
Also, I'm sure Human Centipede would work for a decent Nibbler/Snake inspired game.
