What [not shmup] game are you playing now?

Anything from run & guns to modern RPGs, what else do you play?

From that point I decided to just politely ignore the whole 1337 SOLDIER COOLEGE thing and enjoy the poofy characters and atmosphere. ;3 Some good tunes and backdrops in there. Bit anodyne but not unpleasantly so. IIRC there was a dog chasing a butterfly while this song played? Sometimes it's nice to have a break from bustin' fuckin heads with your ass cheeks hanging out aka VAGRANT STOLY

I'm glad I played FF8 back when I was too young to give a shit about the story. These days I'd have zero tolerance for all the crap that happens in there. Orphanage scene anyone?

beat stacking, and now finishing the hobo side adventure to 100% the achievements.

I'm playing a lot of Lode Runner on MSX and VIC 20. I haven't played it in a few years. I forgot just how sublime the game is.

That's the Game Boy version? From memory, it's okay if you can handle the scrolling screen. All the Nintendo versions scroll like that, I think. Personally, I prefer the older versions as the whole level can be seen at once so there's no chance of running into a baddie you didn't see 'off camera'.

There's also the very cool PC version called Lode Runner: Mad Monks Revenge. Large single screen levels with really nice animation and sound. :)

BurgerTime Deluxe scrolls too and it's ace. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe deals with lesser resolution respectably as well, so not all GB ports compromised like those must suffer terribly from it.

Guys...I give up. I'm approaching 100 hours in La Mulana and I'm completely stumped. I can't do this anymore. Someone please tell me what I should do next.

I took down 6 Guardians, only Palenque and Tiamat left. I'm at the Chamber of Birth and I need the Crystal Skull, but I have no idea where it is. I'm suspecting I need something else before I get it though.

My inventory at the moment:

Follow a walkthrough is what you should do. The second half of La-Mulana has offensively bad puzzle design easily on par with the worst PC point-and-click adventure games out there. There's little point in playing it without a guide of some sort unless you hate yourself.

I also only have Palenque and Tiamat left. I do have the Crystal Skull though. I'll give you a little hint for that:
Spoiler
Do you remember the tablet in the Twin Labyrinths about the little brother's shop and the big brother's shop? Think about that tablet and figure out how to access the big brother's shop.
This will actually lead you to another item, not the Crystal Skull, but you need it for a chain of events that eventually leads you to the Crystal Skull.

Edit: Also you just gave me an idea for something I didn't think of trying in the Chamber of Birth, and it actually worked. Thanks!

Tried out Star Wars battle pod. I was kind of disappointed with it. The physics in the game just weren't convincing enough for me. I think the older Sega Star Wars games were much better. Gameplay is pretty weak. They should have just knocked off colony wars or something. Instead they wanted to make it more like a virtual rollercoaster. The effect of the screen is pretty nice. It is convincing enough elicit a feeling of nausea.

I ended up just looking at a guide. Yeah, no way I was going to figure out that one by myself. I remember that tablet but it never occurred to me what it really meant.

From now on I'll just spoil myself if I get stuck again. Had to look it up about the whole dance of life thing, that's another one I'd never figure out on my own.

Yeah I figured I just didn't have the items needed to solve the
Spoiler
big bro's shop
puzzle, I'd already gone spamming bombs and everything else I could think of in the room it appears. The only reason I solved that puzzle is cause shep told me to try and find it; the following day the answer came to me while I was taking a shit. True story.

I hated palenque. I'd heard about him so much throughout the game, and pondered clues that wouldn't be relevant to me until hours later, that I was just ready to kill the fucker.

I've finished the game now. If you want a point in the right direction or a hint rather than spoiling the answer for yourself I'm more than happy to help. 100 hours? You're a trooper, man. I didn't have the patience.

I had to get a hint for part of the mantra puzzle, It absolutely sucks. I lost some respect for the game at this point.
Spoiler
There are not enough clues that point to where you should actually chant the fucking mantras. I found the tablet that's supposed to be the clue and the language isn't simply misleading; It's inadequate, to the point where i suspect bad translation. People that legitimately figured this out without brute forcing or hints/ knowledge of the original game must be in the extreme minority.
I gave up on hell temple because of the time penalties you get for making mistakes. If I want to play a real challenging platformer I'll stick to classicvanias or something. They feel fairer.

Just managed to beat all Guardians. At this point I have no guilt about looking at spoilers because no way in hell I'd figure out how to open that room in the Dimensional Corridor. The tablet that references it is in a completely different area and it'd take me ages to connect the dots. It's indeed getting pretty ridiculous.

I really hope they tone it down for the sequel.

You must have a LOT of free time! :)

I'm still slugging it out with Lode Runner. I've got a feeling I'll be at it for a while. To keep my sanity I turn to my 'therapy' game, Doom. Doom's like a warm cosy blanket for the soul.

No. Punch-Out only gets particularly hard at Tyson and even then you can figure him out with some work.

K. Sorry. I have the Mr. Dream version because it was cheaper BTW, so technically I beat Mr. Dream (via TKO, by the way). Guess it's not impressive in a hardcore gaming forum.

Who gives a shit what people on the internet thinks. If your accomplishment means something to you then that's all that matters. I recall when I got the EU MD Hellfire 1-All as a kid back in the mid-90s after playing the game religiously for 1-2 years. That clear meant the world for me and it made me realize that you can accomplish great things with hard work and perseverance. I don't even remember what difficulty I was playing on, probably on easy and I probably wasn't playing on default settings either. To me it's all about learning more about the games and achieving personal goals, not playing to impress others.

Started Salt and Sanctuary. Yeah, basically 2D Dark Souls, to the point that the controls feel weird because they aren't set up the same way. Only played just past the first boss but everything seems in place for this to be a cracker.

went with ni no kuni: wrath of the white witch and I'm really enjoying it. just got past old smokey and on the way to the castaway cove. combat doesn't really ramp up until about 10 hours into the game (around al mamoom). It's still fresh because they're gradually adding onto the battle system and it's becoming more pokemon-esque now that I have the ability to capture more familiars.

story, characters, and environments are beautiful and creative which makes me determined to beat it even though it's a 40 hour rpg...but the best parts by far are the actual cutscenes designed by studio ghibli. the battles/respawn rate of the mobs is the most frustrating part of the playthrough. If you make a wrong turn and make a u-turn, you better believe the monster you just killed has already respawned.

kinda curious how ni no kuni II will turn out, especially since ghibli has less involvement (afaik) this time around.

love the drawing, and that ability can't come soon enough. "random" encounters on narrow paths are by far the most annoying part of the game.

speaking of mitey...a day or so ago I metamorphed mitey into his new form, but I've been holding off on doing my entire party at once just to make sure I don't get steamrolled in different encounters. no idea who's good yet, but I also caught the "sun" from the desert area because he gave me a bunch of trouble when I was first traveling to al mamoon. I skimmed over some screenshots and I saw there is an underwater world coming up soon which I'm really excited for.
