If someone held a gun to your head...

Post by Illyrian »

Hey guys. So if someone held a gun to your head and you were only able to play one of each of the following games for the rest of your life, which would you choose and why?
In situations where multiple versions of a game exist, just choose your favourite!
NO EXCEPTIONS!

Battle Garegga OR Armed Police Batrider
Crimson Clover OR Daris Burst AC
Pink Sweets OR Ibara
Dodonpachi OR Dodonpachi Daioujou
Mahou Daisakusen OR Great Mahou Daisakusen
Ketsuipachi or Saidaioujou

If you pick one you can NEVER play the other one again. Which would you choose?

You just insulted some of the most influential and popular shmups of all time, in two sentences. You've got guts, mate.

Garegga. Never cared about these two, but Garegga is Garegga.
DariusBurst AC, of course. CC never clicked with me (I even got the Steam refund for it).
Ibara, Kuro, if possible.
Daioujou. while I don't consider it the best thing ever, is still better, in my opinion, despite it kicking my sorry butt every time.
Don't know these, so I won't say a thing.
Never played either, but SDOJ is a completely different game, while Ketsuipachi is merely an exceptional arrange, so I'd play the former.

Can I choose the whole Dodonpachi series if it means never playing any of those other games again? I'll miss CCWI, but it can't be helped.

I'd choose:
Batrider (Garegga is better, but Batrider has more variety)
DBAC
Ibara, although both suck, so I'd never play it anyways
DOJ
Mahou Daisakusen
Saidaioujou, although I've never actually played either one of those.

Mahou Daisakusen because we already know how to counterstop the other one.

Ketsuipachi or Saidaioujou

-Garegga but not sure, level design seems a bit busier overall IMO

-Darius Burst definitely, cool left/right and beam offense/defense meter management over well designed but generic danmaku. I mean, if I'm picking a Dodonpachi below, what do I even need CC for?

-Ibara definitely, actually fun game over infamously broken silly game

-DOJ but not sure, both games have nice level design and patterns, and both games have scoring I hate, but DOJ probably has better patterns overall and long term appeal. Plus Hypers at least make it feel somewhat unique.

-Dimahoo definitely, fun patterns and level design is fun after the first 3 stages. The bosses are actually some of my favorites in the way they mix in RNG patterns that tend to intersect in interesting and surprising ways. The original is aesthetically nice and has a few nice hectic stage and boss elements, but not enough IMO.

-SOJ probably, haven't played Ketsuipachi but SOJ is alright.

To be in that situation of a person holding a gun to your head, I've been in that type of situation in real life.

The ol' adage of "Don't try to play 'Hero'" in this instance rings true in my profession (which in hindsight could happen at any given time in broad daylight or even during the wee hours of graveyard shifts).

Having gone through this harrowing situation/incident, it really does make me more aware of my surroundings, indeed. Thankfully, what transpired during that brief moment of a either a .44 or .45 held at my face at point-blank range isn't something I'll ever forget for the rest of my life & I'm glad that no one got injured, shot or killed that morning at work (it could've easily turned for the worse at any given time in retrospect when I stop to ponder about it). (I suppose if I had a concealed weapon on me & permit to carry it on me, the situation could easily have been turned around -- but the gun man already has the upper hand in this pressing situation at hand -- what do you do? Hmmm.....) The random element of surprise & being caught off guard + the fact that everything happened so quickly, that I could not have seeing coming in this particular instance.

What's interesting is the police response time was a super slow 13 minutes (that is too much time for the bad guys to get away & make a run for it/be long gone before the heat arrives -- WTF?!) for the heavily armed SWAT team to show up in full force when four 911 calls were made at the time this gut wrenching moment transpired. I'm just glad that I live to see another day.

So when I showed up for work the next day after this incident, a co-worker said to me, " Congratulations on your first robbery." I started laughing/cracking up at this sly sarcastic phrase because it was true (to take off the edge over the seriousness of it all). I asked him if he had been held up before at work and his answer was that he hadn't. So yes, I've heard horror stories of folks getting shot/killed over trivial matters (like over mere chump change, gang initiations where a small crew goes to a public place and randomly shoots an innocent bystander to be sworn in, etc).

The real irony of this overall situation was all this took place during my lunch break with being held up by two guys and then being held up a second time by the armed SWAT team makes for a very interesting double-whammy situation to be in (there was one sniper who had his assault rifle trained on me during that intense stand-off/moment at all times -- this, folks, is one serious situation that you do not want to find yourself in).

So yes, I was held up twice during my lunch break on that memorable & eventful morning -- it doesn't get any better than that, folks. Eariler that morning, I had an odd feeling/inner intuition tugging on my conscience and asked myself: Is today going to be a normal day? Apparently, a few hours later after asking myself that very question, shit hits the fan big time. Chalk it up to just another day of being on the job. So be it.
