Least Favorite Cave Shooter

Post by AxelMill »

Illegitimate deformed spawn of this topic.
Take the title as you will - "most disappointing" or "most underwhelming" or whatever.

My personal least favorite Cave shooter is... Fever SOS (didn't play Feveron, so I won't call it by this name).
Besides the groovy soundtrack (the boss theme's sirens are annoying, though), I didn't find anything special about it.
Spoiler
Q&A:
Q: Why "least favorite" and not "worst"?
A: Because I think "best" and "worst" are objective terms, and I do not want those. I want personal opinion. And there is no universally hated Cave shmup. I think.

Q: Are you stupid? Do you want to start a war and get banned as a result?
A: Maybe.

Deathsmiles 2 and Pink Sweets, which ironically were two of EOJ's favorites.
I do appreciate that they were trying to do something different than their typical formula, but neither clicked with me despite putting an number of hours into each.

You don't have to like it, but it's by far the most different (and therefore "special") game Cave has made. I don't want to type it all again, so here's my explanation for why.

As for the actual topic, I don't dislike any Cave game. I guess Donpachi, Akai Katana, and esp Ra.De are the least interesting to me overall.

Guwange. The whole mechanic with the movable shot thing just felt awkward to me. Probably time to give it another chance though...

Ibara. Two ships, four bombs, seven weapons. Swappable at will, in Kuro.

Oh, thanks for the link. That was an interesting read. I think I just need to give it more time, like every other shmup. Maybe someday I'll replace this game with other stuff I didn't play much yet and don't have a clear opinion of, like Donpachi or Pink Sweets or Deathsmiles II or Muchi Muchi Pork or ESP Ra-

Considering how much love he gets, some hate is a breath of fresh air.
Now, if it's undeserved or not, it's another story.

I meant how weapons act:

3 different charge shots. These are A: The 'Lock-On Type' tracking ray, B: 'The 'Bomb Type' Rockets, or C: The 'Roll', a spiral expanding ring of energy balls, similar to a weapon in Toaplan's 'Vimana'. Depending on which charging weapon you choose, you will automatically change your gameplay later. So, finding your prefered weapon means finding you prefered way to beat the game

I feel like if I disliked any Cave shooter then that would just tell me I haven't played it enough to appreciate it.

Oh, yeah. Pretty unique. Can't use any of those besides the Lock-On, though.

On the other hand, you could say that you haven't played it enough because you disliked it.
You can't force yourself to play a game you don't enjoy for dozens of hours until at some point, eventually, it'll get good/you'll like it, no matter the genre. Those FFXIII haters are sort of right, after all.
Unless shmups work exactly this way and I'm a clueless idiot. I dunno. You guys know, probably.

Mushihimesama Futari.

Plenty of runner ups, though; Cave has loads of terrible games. ESP Ra.De, Espgaluda, Mushihimesama, Ibara, Ibara Kuro, and Pink Sweets are all pretty much intolerably awful.

I haven't played Deathsmiles 2, Akai Katana, or SDOJ, but out of what I have played I'd have to say either DFK, Espgaluda 2, or Pink Sweets.
AxelMill wrote:Oh, yeah. Pretty unique. Can't use any of those besides the Lock-On, though.
Bomb is hard to use well, it's supposedly really good if you know what you're doing but if you don't it's... not. Roll is very good though and the best choice for many people. You can anticipate where major enemies are going to spawn and start charging it a second or two in advance to do massive damage immediately, often outright killing them. You don't even have to charge it that much for most enemies. Personally I think Lock kind of sucks since it can only target one enemy at a time and doesn't do a whole lot of damage, so I'd rather just use the spread shot instead (speaking of which, Type B's the most common and balanced choice).

Akai Katana. The perspective is so wrong that I cannot play the game.
