Re: Shmup Related Questions That Don't Deserve a Thread

Post by AxelMill »

So, my b-day is approaching fast and I figured "Why not a shmup?"
Play-Asia is selling the Platinum edition of Saidaioujou for a little over 30€. So...
1. Is the input lag that bad? Will a guy who didn't notice that CV1k games on MAME lagged mind?
2. Is there a way to play 360 mode without two girls staring at me and moonspeaking/squealing the whole time?
3. Should I wait for an unconfirmed Steam release instead?
4. Should I even bother in the first place?
5. Was I supposed to bump the SDOJ thread instead?

Thanks a lot in advance.

If you didn't notice that, I don't know, you may not care. You might still notice the bigger hitbox though.

Changing the gameplay window size hides all of the sidebar junk, and you can turn the voice volume off.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

If you're at all interested in DDP and there's nothing else you particularly want to buy instead, there's nothing wrong with picking it up to at least see how you find it. It has some good points even if it's not super popular.

Considering my only other choice is freaking Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth, and I just got another SMT-like game (Persona Q), I think this is the only game to buy.
Though waiting for God knows how long to get it, and forcing someone to stay home to receive it, isn't exactly what I'd like to do. Eh. I don't know. At least I know it's a good game.

the input lag doesn't really affect anything until the game slows down big time and you have to make super accurate dodges

in other words if you aren't going to do any complex scoring there's no issue
it's way, way better than cv1k mame lag

Still with that ? cv1k games react on the second frame on my setup using GroovyMAME, there are worse scenarios honestly.
Though I suppose tons of people use the default D3D queuing several frames, laggy displays, and splat greasy shaders over it then call 'cv1k games much too laggy'

Does anyone know what they are saying during the radio chatter in UD?

Thanks Tom!

I did some digging from the link you left and was able to figure out the PA annoucement before the Browning.

Probably not a perfect translation, but the gist of it is:

"Soldiers of the Empire disarm/land and surrender. I repeat - disarm/land and surrender"

Does anyone happen to know a build/version of MAME where savestates work in conjunction with Dragon Saber? I tried a few versions so far (ShmupMAME 2.2 & 4.2, MAME Plus, MAMEUIFX), but to no avail. Very rarely does a savestate work, most of the time the game either produces massive graphical errors, horrendous scrolling, freezes or other nasty stuff that make it unplayable. Since the final stage is excruciatingly difficult I'd love to get a bit of proper practice before seriously trying to clear it. Can anyone help out with that? :)

If MAME's not an option (sorry I can't help, useless on that front) - might emulating the port on Namco Museum Encore (NTSCJ PS1) suffice? It's been absolutely years, but I recall ePSXe running it pretty decently while I was doing PS/MAME comparisons back in the day. Savestates should work fine there.

That'd probably the next best thing, but ePSXe refuses to work on my computer for some reason. Tried several step-by-step guides, videos and all that only to be greeted by the black screen. Maybe some incompatibility with the graphics card? :?

But! Someone found a goofy way to effectively get a level select code in MAME which is already mighty helpful. It's not a perfect way to practice, but it'll work for this game. I think that it doesn't take rank perfectly into account (I get the impression it is at least partially based on survival time and you can't replicate that with this method), but I'm glad for anything. Figured out a better way for boss 7 and the entire final stage already, but I certainly need more practice for almost everything, still (HATE stage 5 boss and his circling rocks with a passion, he's such a devil Image).

^ dunno which OS you're using but with ePSXe I have no problems under XP and 7, while 8.1 and 10 give me Hell.

It may not be considered as extensive/complex as ePSXe, but PSXFin (also known as PSX) sure as heck is easier to use. If you somehow can't find it, I can upload a ready-to-be-used version for you.

If you're using OpenGL related video plugins, mostly causes like that unless you're have updated version of OpenGL.

The one solution is googled video plugin "P.E.Op.S Soft Driver 1.18" then download it.

Yet another Saidaioujou question: can I buy it from the Xbox Store? It's only 2,700 yen there, much cheaper than any physical copy.
I'm asking because the wiki shown in this topic doesn't have this game listed in any section, and the purchase window does open without any trouble on my Italian end.

Why aren't there that many WR replays for shmups out there? Maybe I haven't spent enough time on Nico, but if you look up the replay of the WR for a certain game the majority of the time you won't find it. This never happens in the speedruning community so why does it happen in the shmupping community?

Most WRs are set at Japanese arcades which usually don't have recording equipment.

Speedrunning is also relatively new and grew around streaming sites like Twitch, but the STG superplayer community in Japan is still rooted in the arcades, and videos and strategies are usually shared privately.

I don't think speedrunning is that much of a new thing, people have been running Doom back in mid-90s; it's just it gained its mainstream appeal relatively recently thanks to Twitch.

The ability to easily record and share small-sized replays without extra software involved was one of the key things that helped Doom back in 90s, and probably one of the reasons why we have WR-level replays for most Touhou games today.

Technically speedrunning is also pretty old (though its rise through events like GDQ is recent), but even in speedrunning's early days sharing and collaborating on runs over the internet, like in the case of Quake Done Quick, was much more of a thing than it was in the arcade-centric STG superplayer community. Being able to record replays helps as vvv_stg said, and I think not being centralized around physical locations like arcades also encouraged public sharing.

On the raiden fighters aces collection, is "arcade" difficulty actually equal to standard difficulty on the PCBs? I've been fiddling around with RF2 in MAME, and it seems that the MAME version (set to normal difficulty in the operator menus) is a bit easier than the aces version set to arcade difficulty (of course that could just be my imagination, or it could be that the bullets are easier to see with the laptop screen closer to my face than the TV).

You might already know all this, but by default Aces runs a bit faster than the PCBs (60hz refresh versus ~57hz). You can adjust the display settings to approximate PCB speed but it'll cause slight visual artifacts.

Ah, that would probably explain why I suddenly feel overwhelmed when I play the aces port, but not the MAME version; thanks BIL 8)

What are the most "Psikyo-like" games that aren't made by Psikyo? Bonus points for mentioning something other than Sonic Wings/Aero Fighters.

The other thing to keep in mind is that STG WRs have historically been validated and curated by organizations like Arcadia. With speedrunning, there's really no body like that to verify so video proof is typically required for a record to have any credibility and video sharing became ingrained in the culture out of necessity.
