Damn, the eternal battle between the graphic bitches and the gameplay whores! Considering Ibara's theme, i pretend that this trivial use of lexicon is proper, though
"The only desire the Culture could not satisfy from within itself was one common to both the descendants of its original human stock and the machines [...]: the urge not to feel useless."

This little deal brings up a good point twe. WTF is up with YesAsia's game listings? To me, they have some of the best deals out of all the import sites. I like to buy from them the most, yet have an extremely difficult time doing so, and it's all because of their horrific spelling errors & Engrish. I can never find the shmups I'm looking for on their site because most of them are spelt wrong. ESPGaluda for the longest time was listed as ESPga<b>r</b>uda which made it hard to find. Also, the Psikyo collections don't have their full titles. And Sengoku Ace & Sengoku Blade is listed as Sengoku Ace & Sengoku <b>Braid</b>. Navigating through their site gives me a headache sometimes...twe wrote:Well, it's been up for a couple months actually, but under the name "ishoubi". They finally corrected it. For those who already preordered it when it was called "ishoubi" (like me), don't worry. You don't have to cancel it and re-preorder this. They've automatically changed the game's name for your order.Michaelm wrote:Ibara up for preorder at yesasia.com.
For those who haven't preordered it yet.

Yes, you can play it with a modded US PS2. That's what I'm doing right now with Mushi and other Cave shmups.doctorx0079 wrote:So will we be able to play this on a US PS2 if we mod it? Is it better to use a swap disk? Is any of that legal??
Sorry for being such a noob.
Is it legal? According to the RIAA and MPAA even fair use is illegal.

Taito has updated their Ibara PS2 site with lots of brand new pics.
Here is the main game:
http://www.taito.co.jp/d3/cp/ibara/gamemode1.html
Here's pics of Arrange mode:
http://www.taito.co.jp/d3/cp/ibara/gamemode2.html
They state EXPLICITLY that PS2 arrange is the same as Black Label. So there's no doubt now. See all the x300 multipliers on the screen for proof.
Also, could I be dreaming, or is this game in LOW-RES (a la Galuda/DOJ)?
The pics look more low-res than Mushi PS2 pics ever did.

Here are the links to the promotion video for the upcoming PS2 version,

As seen in the later part of the 2nd video, the arrange mode certainly feels more "cave"! bullet patterns and multipliers showing on screen

Wow... who'd have though Cave would suck that goddamn much at porting one of their own games...twe wrote:Actually, Cave ported Mushi (and, the upcoming Ibara) to the PS2 themselves. Taito was just the publisher. For proof of this just look at Cave's consumer game page:zakk wrote:The initial work on DDP:DOJ was _hard_. However, since Galuda ran on the same hardware, that was much less work, so they'd prefer to port games on the DDP:DOJ hardware.
Mushi is new hardware. So they'd have the same hard work to go through for that port. Of course that might have made future ports (ibara/galuda2) easier.
Mihara had mentioned being 'sick' around that time. Something about work-related stress. I think he even went into the hospital for a bit. If his job was already that stressful, the Mushi port was probably out of the question.
So when they turned it down, off to Taito went Cave.
http://www.cave.co.jp/gameonline/consumer.html
It says clearly in Japanese that Cave is the developer of the Mushi home port, while Taito is the publisher. If you compare DOJ and Galuda on that page, it states Arika was both the Developer and Publisher of the home ports.
Arika would be the best choice for a Ketsui port, as it's on the DOJ/Galuda hardware, right? I'd think it would be a snap for them, considering they have the dev tools all in place and two games on that hardware behind them. But I doubt it will happen at this point.
Then again, it's a known fact the PS2 is the hardest current system to develop for, period. Developers have said this.
I still stand by my firm belief that Cave should have either gone with Dreamcast, Xbox, or Gamecube for their ports after Arika stopped porting their games.

The XBOX? For a game that gets only released in Japan? Why the hell should they do that? The PS2 has by far the widest userbase in Japan (and elsewhere, for that matter), so porting their games to it makes actually a lot of sense.Zweihander wrote: Wow... who'd have though Cave would suck that goddamn much at porting one of their own games...

B/c a low res game on an LCD or Plasma will look like absolute and complete shit. A low res game displayed in high res on an LCD or plasma will only look like shit. These are the people most game companies worry about today.

They do.neorichieb1971 wrote:Forgive me for asking.. but why is it consoles in this day and age do not support resolutions that are native to arcade hardware?
Play any PS2 Cave shooter in proper tate mode through RGB out on a RGB monitor and they look great.
The only time they look awful is when you play yoko and use all that horrible filtering.

In fact on some LCD monitors (decent models included, not necessarily just crap ones) trying to upscale a low res game via an in-built scaler won't even display an image at all. You may just see an out of frequency/resolution range error message. Manufacturers don't seem to be required to test all their models for support of such old signal modes. The days of low res are numbered...GaijinPunch wrote:B/c a low res game on an LCD or Plasma will look like absolute and complete shit. The port doesn't suck, really. Just lacks low res and one of the patterns on the 4th boss is changed.Wow... who'd have though Cave would suck that goddamn much at porting one of their own games...

On Xbox or GC it'd have to be scaled anyways, the systems don't output low res. DOJ or Galuda are better than arcade perfect on ps2, on those systems they'd be worse thanks to being scaled. Could Deadcast have handled them? Most likely, but it's water under the bridge now. The latest ps2 releases are consistently outselling DC ones anyways - if such a comparison can be made considering they're different companies etc. - it'd have been a worse decision for them commercially.

Guess quantity overrides quality... tsk tsk.
I wasn't talking specifically about the scaling problems, seeing as I play in TATE 90% of the time. I meant the slowdown and sound bugs, found in both Mushi and Homura. I'm worried Ibara will be another bad port (i.e. Mushi), seeing as it was blackflagged the moment Arika said "do it yourself"...

What Mushi sound bugs are you referring to? Is it the occasional delayed laggy sound effect? Although I've never played the PCB, it could have similar laggy sound delays. I think that the sound is laggy when the ps2 CPU is 100% utilized, (when there are lots of sprites on the screen).Zweihander wrote:Guess quantity overrides quality... tsk tsk.

Depends. I have a 24" widescreen monitor that takes rgb and s-video as well. It upscales very nicely when i play dreamcast via vgabox (the native res is 1920x1200). Then again i love pixelsGaijinPunch wrote:B/c a low res game on an LCD or Plasma will look like absolute and complete shit.
