Turbografx 16 Love

Post by DQ187 »

Didn't see a thread for the system. I recently got into collecting for Turbografx as it always seemed to elude me. I had never really heard of it growing up since nobody I knew owned one. Only caught glimpses of them in catalogs and magazines. And I remember my brother almost picked up a Turbo Express one year but decided against it for some reason.

Dove deep into collecting for it last year. Not planning on going for a full set as I was mainly driven to the system for shoot em ups. I made some deals with a few collectors over the past year and have a decent selection now. Plan on picking up a Duo down the road so I can start picking up some CD games but it will probably have to wait for a bit. Really wanting Spriggan tho! :P

Anyways, any other fans of the Turbo here? Maybe share your collection and turbo stories! 8) Here's my collection:

Hahaha, I was just gonna say, I always feel like my IQ dropped a few points when I look at some of that TurboGrafx box art.

Probably not gonna find much TurboGrafx love here outside of people who grew up with the thing in North America, and even then most will probably tend towards the PC Engine side of things.

Very nice collection though, you definitely went for the good games! Make sure you get Ninja Spirit, I think the US version is pretty cheap too.

Yeah, lots of great stuff there - Alien Crush, Side Arms and Bloody Wolf were among the first HuCards I got, and I intend to get several others there soon. Seconding Ninja Spirit, superb port of a definitive ninja sidescroller.

I'd so pick up a TG16 R-Type if not for the region incompatibility. PCE port's lovely, but swapping cards and entering passwords three times per 2-ALL just ruins it for me. R-Type Complete has fairly cheesy redbook (wish it'd gone with the arcade OST ala Gradius II), and Perikles thinks it adds extra sprite flicker.

I actually have a mild second-hand nostalgia for the TG16, my first gaming magazines being loaded with launch coverage. I could swear I remember Splatterhouse having an ad in Archie comics, too.

Side Arms is a challenger for Genesis Shadow Dancer's lofty crown, for sure.

I don't think the audio is all that bad, it just doesn't fit that well with R-Type's dark and brooding style. The cutscene's are cringe-inducing though. And I could never understand why it's called "Complete", as the second loop is missing entirely!

I think TurboGrafx R-Type and TurboGrafx Magical Chase are the only two games where the US versions have a the edge due to some minor improvements.

I knew there was something big I'd forgotten about Complete - yeah, no loop is indeed the final nail in the coffin. WTF.

My friend an I both had Turbos briefly in the 90s when you could buy them in stores. Lots of fun times playing Air Zonk and Nutopia 2.

Great collection you've got, thanks for sharing.

Thanks guys! :)

Definately would like to pick up Ninja Spirit and a few others like Dungeon Explorers and the Legendary Axe and Nuetopia games! Tried to bang out most of the shooters though I'll probably never get Magical Chase unless i stumble across one in the wild cuz I don't want to drop the coin on it.

I agree with the Turbo having some Terrible cover art for alot of the games though some i really like. Love the Air Zonk cover art and Soldier Blade is one of my favorite covers ever which is why I have it displayed. The ship design and menacing Enemy coming from behind the clouds is so cool to me, just look at that beauty! not too mention, it's one of my favorite Shooters ever. I was really proud of my high score which I was going to post here but I realized it would only be second place. :x gonna have to try harder!

Only TurboGrafx game I'm familiar with is Victory Run. Discovered it completely by accident, pretty fun arcade racer with some sim elements.

I love the TurboGrafx, though I collect mostly for the PC Engine. Still, there are some perks of the PC Engine. I like the changes made to Air Zonk and Bonk in localization (seriously, even the name "Bonk" is just ten times more lovable), and of course you get games in English for those ones where the language is a barrier to entry. And R-Type on one card. I also think that even though the box art is typically not very good for the TurboGrafx, the spines look a lot better than PC Engine's (the PCE spines look like the kind you'd find on cheap CDRs when you have them all lined up).

You've got a nice collection there. Soldier Blade is fantastic, as are those two Bonks, Super Star Soldier, Devil's and Alien Crush, and Bloody Wolf is mad underrated. That is a great run n gun. You should get that add-on for composite out! That's the biggest drawback in my opinion. I'm still baffled that they'd ship it with just RF. IMO that's even harder to defend than the one-controller-port thing. The bigger styling is also kind of a "WTF", but I sorta like how it looks. 'course, nothing beats the cuteness of the PC Engine, whose size is about that of a couple stacked jewel cases.

For people who aren't that familiar with PCE vs. TurboGrafx, one big problem is that the pinouts on the cards are different. So, you can't collect for both easily. There are adaptors, but I've found them to be a real headache to use and they stick out the front in a goofy way.

Perikles thinks it adds extra sprite flicker.
I've heard this but played both side by side and never saw it.... if it's there it's not noticeable and any real way. The only thing that seemed to change the amount of flicker was the amount of fire power I had at any point in either version.
Damn Tim, you know there are quite a few Americans out there who still lives in tents due to this shitty economy, and you're dropping loads on a single game which only last 20 min. Do you think it's fair? How much did you spend this time?

I don't care what anyone says, Aero Blasters is awesome. I've also got an arcade PCB for Air Buster but I vastly prefer the Turbografx version.

I love this system. I was one of the few weird kids with a TG16 back in the day and I'm really grateful for the experience. The games I grew up with were:

Blazing Lazers (still my favorite STG ever, along with R-Type)
Devil's Crush
Final Lap Twin
Keith Courage
Pac-Land
Vigilante

I have quite a few more now (click for big):

Awesome collection d0s! I'm not even sure what some of those titles are as I havnt really looked into the PC Engine selection very much. I know I want copies of Final Soldier and Spriggan eventually.

Lol at the games in alphabetical order. Ive never been one to arrange in alphabetical order mainly due to the way they look on a shelf. I'm more of an aesthetically pleasing organizer. I do have some ocd tendencies. I organize in a weird way which starts with box size, then color, then size of spine label :P

Here's some shots of my collection for reference. I'm in major need of new shelving which I've been putting off till I move into a new place which is going to happen this year. You can sorta see what I'm talking about though:

Image

Image

My game room is sorta just a clutter due to lack of proper shelving but my style of organizing is more apparent in my movie shelves in the living room, though I tend to put some things next to each other like sets of movies. Or like the top row on the blu-ray shelf is TV shows, 2nd is Cartoons and things like that:

I could never do this, I get rid of (sell, not throw away) any and all cardboard boxes/anything not essential to protecting the game. So the only cases I keep are CD, DVD and hucard cases. I never go for special/limited editions because only the game matters to me (unless I really like the soundtrack). I don't even like to think of it as a collection because nothing there is "collectible quality", I always go for the absolute cheapest copy of anything that's still playable!

I like my carts loose as long as they are perfectly serviceable, but I like a good printed manual too and found GBC/A boxes easy to store flat-packed.
The bigger PC games boxes are something I oughtta find some better use for than just lying on shelf, though.

Ah, nothing wrong with that. I just like to get a collectors edition of a game if its available for ones Im into. Especially rpgs. I'm also a sucker for a Steelbook! :P

Also, I like to have a Game complete if possible. Alot of my games I've had since they came out and just hung onto everything. I dig the artwork on boxes and of coarse it's always nice and handy to have manuals. I also always loved reading the backs of games, some of em just crack me up!
