My Doujin/Indie Shmup Collection

Post by Mischief Maker »

I've been collecting doujin and indie shmups for, Jesus, nearly 10 years now, ever since I discovered the now-defunct Shoot the Core database. My goal was always to collect 42 of the best PC-native shmups legally. Today Great Fairy Wars arrived from Rancor and I discover that Zen Ichi has gone freeware. At this point I'm declaring my collection finished, and I want to show off to the one place on the net that might actually give a fig.

Once again, all these games are either freeware, or otherwise legally purchased, DRM-free. Here they all are in alphabetical order:

1. Alltynex Second
2. Astebreed
3. Battle Traverse
4. Bike Banditz
5. Blue Wish Resurrection Plus
6. Cloudphobia (The first doujin to distribute online internationally, respect!)
7. Crimzon Clover - World Ignition
8. Danmaku Unlimited 2
9. Diadra Empty
10. Double Spoiler
11. Eden's Aegis
12. Ether Vapor Remaster
13. eXceed 2nd - Vampire Rex
14. eXceed 3rd - Jade Penetrate Black Package
15. Flying Red Barrel
16. Great Fairy Wars
17. Hellsinker
18. Imperishable Night
19. Jamestown
20. Kamui
21. Mountain of Faith (Hey, it's the very first doujin I imported, and still Zun's most beautiful shmup)
22. Parsec 47
23. Patriot Dark (I replaced the music with the Total Annihilation OST)
24. Perfect Cherry Blossom
25. PriZhm
26. QP Shooting - Dangerous!!
27. RefleX
28. RefRain - Prism Memories
29. Revolver360 - Re:Actor
30. ring^-27
31. Samidare (Thanks again, Rancor! Sorry my reviews didn't bring more business.)
32. Shoot the Bullet
33. Solid State Survivor (I replaced the music with the Jets 'n Guns OST)
34. Sora (English-translated, no more need for Applocale, yay!)
35. Stella Vanity
36. Tails Gear
37. Trouble Witches
38. Twin Seeds DX
39. Valkyrius
40. Warning Forever (Infinity Danger was missing a certain something)
41. Zen-Ichi
42. Zillion Beatz

A to Z the best for PC, IMHO.

Dunno if you count it as Doujin since it's OOOOOLLLLLDDDD doujin, but Cho Ren Sha 68k is my favorite doujin shmup, and tied as my favorite shmup.

Mecha Ritz would be second place for me (another top 5 stg contender), and Kaikan third. Mecha Ritz is getting an updated, non-freeware release that expands on and improves it quite a bit. I think you and everyone else in the universe needs that game in their life.

I'd recommend looking into those three if you haven't already, before closing off your list/collection :3

Kaikan is very fun despite some oversights (mainly some really really silly blind spots). UFO is my favorite Touhou. CHO-REN-SHA totally deserves a mention, for being one of the first (the first?) great doujins.

I agree that Cho Ren Sha 68K is fantastic. The only reason I didn't include it is because of the lack of autofire.

Never heard of the other two, but dammit, the BD-R is already burnt!

Ask and ye shall receive:

Sora

The Tale of Alltynex Trilogy

Obviously these reviews were written long before the games were localized.

judgement silversword!!!
sure m-kai is part of qute now but at the time he made it he was independent, iirc qute only published the game (for winning one of the wonderwitch competitions).

also if it weren't for the fact that it's not quite finished yet i'd yell at you about not including final boss.

Aw frig!

Can anyone confirm whether this is for direct download or overseas shipping?

I don't think a direct download is available (yet), but overseas shipping is.

NTSC-J: You know STGs are in trouble when you have threads on how to introduce them to a wider audience and get more people playing followed by threads on how to get its hardcore fan base to play them, too.

I bought that. It's a physical copy of the game. (I went with the 14~20 day shipping option and it arrived in like, 3 days.)

I could be wrong but I think that store only deals in physical goods. The digital version of Mecha Ritz will probably end up on DLsite or some place like that. Perhaps Steam?

Sangetto (that's the name of the store, or Sangatsu Usagi/March Rabbit) is indeed a physical store dealing physical goods. I visited in January and picked up some rare doujins like the Akashicbox. Works much in the same way as with rancor, Nanapo Store or the old Palet Web, which seems to be gone now.

I must have like a hundred or so doujin games, probably half of that is shmuckmups. One day I may have to sit and picture that because I don't think even I understand the magnitude of CD cases and boxes I have around...

Great list of doujin shmups by the way! :D
