Any Cave games in US shore?

Post by ryosnk »

Are their any Cave games that were brought here (US) for any US system?

I am not aware of any work they have done on SSX, but I know they did Steep Slope Sliders on the Saturn. I have that game and it is pretty good, not something I play all the time, but a decent effort.

Yep, it was Steep Slope Sliders. Quite an excellent snowboard game, for the time. It was (IMO) better than the Cool Boarders series up to that point.

What arcade games were released there?
Donpachi, Dodonpachi, ESPRade (intl version), and Progear are the only ones that come to mind.

We've all heard the Dodonpachi III rumors... I even saw someone mention it on 2ch.

The same reason most shmups don't make it here, I'd guess...there's just not much of a market for them. In addition, Cave seems to have been doing okay up till now keeping themselves in Japan, so I doubt they'd see much reason to take the risk of shipping stuff elsewhere in hopes of it catching on, when there's not much chance of that happening.

They don't even take risks of relaesing games in Japan. They don't have a publishing department. All the publishing (risk) is done by a third party.

I can't wait until Gaylo 3 to learn his secret. :)

It is disappointing that no Cave games have ever made it.

I'd repost the whole thing someone typed up about "SCEA strongly discourages the US release of any PS2 game which doesn't utilize the console's 3D rendering capabilities"... forgot who posted it tho.

..more like CRAPabilities amirite lols

Cave would allow publishing in the USA of their titles, but their license fee's would put the cost of the games in $50 bracket. Which is just not possible under SCEA's strict policy of 2D is "budget quality software".

It would be more beneficial for Cave or its publisher to make the game region free. But again Sony is the most stringent company out there where region lockout is concerned.

To be honest, Cave don't really know how to cash in on their products.. They neither try or compromise, which imo is just stupid. They could sell 15,000 copies at $20 a pop, even 10,000+ copies at $30 a pop..
This industry has become 2 dimensional as it transcended into a 3D world.

And of course Cave supposedly has high licensing fees. Sometimes I wonder whether Cave really doesn't care at all for its non-JP fans, stemming from the fact that in a previous interview, they didn't even seem aware that some from the international community enjoyed their games.

The Donpachi PCB was USA distributed by Atlus USA...

Post by PC Engine Fan X! »

In 1995, the Cave arcade Jamma PCB by the name of Donpachi was distributed in the USA in limited numbers by Atlus USA...it's a tad bit different than the orginal Japanese Bios ver. of the name. It appears from time to time on USA eBay but is offered for sale as a "bare-bones" PCB only...I've never seen a full-kit (with original cardboard factory box) of USA Bios ver. of Cave/Atlus Donpachi PCB offered for sale on eBay ever. You would've have had to buy one brand new from Atlus USA themselves if you wanted one new & complete.

Just seems to be a Japaense practice in general. You wouldn't believe how often a new drink comes out, people get attached, and then the fucking thing is gone, never to return. O_o

You know, if Sony does make the PS3 region free, shmup imports will reach an all time high. In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if Gamestop starts stocking imports. Wouldn't it be cool if the first PS3 Cave import ended up on their best seller list?

hehe. And people wonder why the Xbox doesn't sell in Japan. You know, if the American & European Xbox had the Japanese PS2 lineup, and the PS2 had the Xbox's, we'd never import games or consoles from Japan.

As much as I would like that to happen, shmups will never be best sellers. It's a niche hobby and a dying one at that. But frankly I don't care that shmups are niche. I have enough shmups on various consoles and emulators to last a few life times.

Niche, yes. Dying? Not so sure anymore... we've (arguably) seen an increase in quality releases in the past few years. And now even the west is getting a taste for it again, if you look at the surprise success of Geometry Wars 2...
