I completely understand why people love them but I really don't get much enjoyment out of fighting games. I enjoy shmups partly because they are predictable..

I hate predictability in general, which is why I prefer rng bullet patterns in my shmups

Well not so much DDP predictability like enemy chaining same place same time every run, but more like say in Yagawa game. Every run is indeed different, but even when shit hits the fan I have a couple safety mechanisms I can try and split second impliment. It's the perfect blend of I guess somewhat predictable yet always different and needing to adapt

Maybe I'm making an ever better argument for fighting games and should give them more of a chance?

Lately I've actually been getting into smash brothers, although I feel like most people here wouldn't really consider that a fighting game; Between the platforming elements, the low skill floor, and Nintendo fan service it's something that's pretty easy for me to pick up.

One of these days I'd like to take the time to really get into a traditional fighting game... Maybe when Tekken 7 or Pokken drops?

Well, first off, Smash is definitely a fighting game and it definitely has a high skill ceiling. Melee is best though.

KOF13 is also notorious for having very difficult combos and such.

I'm seeing a lot of posts here from people about being intimidated and whatnot. Really, it's not that hard to get past that roadblock. Here's all you have to do:

Step 1: Find a friend who's at the same level as you

Step 2: Learn the game with eachother

Step 3: There is no step 3.

It doesn't matter how hard or how easy the game is to learn, if you're learning the game with somebody who's at a similar level, it'll be infinitely more enjoyable and you'll never feel overwhelmed, because the main source of competition will always be in the same boat as you. If you suck, you can suck together, but you'll still be able to have fun and exciting matches even if you're not playing "well".

I wasn't actually denying that smash had a high skill ceiling, I was saying that it had a low skill floor (as in easy to pick up and play).

I've been mainly playing smash 4, although I'm thinking of signing up for melee netplay and trying to get into melee...

In my experience, it's either 0 or 100. Either I meet people who can't even throw a hadouken (all my IRL friends), or I meet dedicated, stick-using, spends-countless-hours-online players who are far above my level. And I can't play online due to horrible amounts of lag. Some of us are in a rut.

Not that it matters, these days I have no time for fighting games anyway.

That's the main reason I never got into Quake duels as much as I wanted to - it was rare to find someone who actually had enough experience to know the fundamentals of moving around and timing items but not at the point where they completely demolished me, even taking into consideration that Quake games can easily steamroll one way or the other from the slightest difference in skill. I feel the same way about the fighters I have any interest in, though I'm far more of a noob at those than I was at Quake. The complex inputs also turn me off fighting games - with such a steep learning curve I've got other things I'd rather learn (such as shmups, which are about the opposite in input complexity).

I got back into fighting games last year and I only play SF2 Dash and SSF2X nowadays. Having that said, I play other fighting games casually every once in a while like KoF 98, Garou, Vampire Savior and 3S but I'm not actively working on improving at them. Will probably pick up SFV when that comes out, I enjoyed the beta. My main focus will most likely still be Dash and SSF2X though.

I lived for fighting games before I got serious with shmups, and fighting games were my entry drug into the arcade scene. These days I play most arcade genres, and shmups are my main, but I try to keep my fighting abilities decent.

I casually play more or less every fighting game that comes out, even the weird obscure shit like Koihime Musou. But beyond this I also try to keep my skills up to a decent level within at least one or two popular fighters at any given time so I can play comfortably in the arcades here whenever I want.

At a semi-serious level I've gone through lots over the years, including Garou, SSFIIT, SF4, GGXX Slash, P4A, Tekken Tag 2, DOA5, and others. Current main game is DOA5LR, and it deserves way more respect than it gets imo. Was very excited to move from Tekken Tag 2 to 7 until I actually played it. I figured it would replace DOA5 for me, but actually I find it quite inferior, especially compared to its own predecessor. Currently looking forward to SFV, KoF XIV (no seriously), and Revelator.

Really really want to play Pokken but refusing to pick up a Wii U for one game only, meh....

Was casually into FTGs for years then got turned off for the most part by SFIV and the fighters from that era. Got back into a little via Smash (but stop playing for it after a little while).

I did pre-order SFV for PC so once that hits that is more or less where I'll send my FTG time with. Hell I never picked up another joystick with a Modded JLF just for fighters (and shocking the Modded JLF is great for shmups).

You have good bearings then. I play shmups as often as I play Guilty Gear and RPGs.

I play shmups as a break from fighting games

This pretty much, but I mostly play fighting games with people (either online or offline, outside of training). Lately I haven't had much contact with most of the people I play with, so I'm playing shmups more.

Currently playing Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- (as Ramlethal), BlazBlue Chronophantasma Extend (as Lambda-11), Dengeki Bunko FIGHTING CLIMAX IGNITION (as Asuna), all on PS3.

Extremely hyped for both Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- (as it'll add Dizzy, my Accent Core main of old) and BlazBlue Centralfiction (as it'll add Saya/Mikado/Izanami. I waited for four years to see her as playable and wanted to play as her for this long).
