Do a lot of shmuppers play fighting games?...

Post by mtbd500 »

I feel shmups and fighting games go hand in hand as both use arcade sticks and require good execution of stick movement and buttons. Are there any other street fighter players on shmups forum!?. If there is we could start a shmups clan and all play. I often wondered if anyone arranges to play 2 player mode on shmups?.

Just a peasant tier KoF & SamSho filthy casual myself.

I've seen both over at Shoryuken.
They seem to be two enduring arcade genres.
Some of the best shmups don't actually end in a vowel.
No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Judging by the amount of activity in this thread, I think the answer to the thread title is "yes."

I used to be a huge fighting game fan. I don't think there's a lot of overlap, but some of my fighting game friends do play or used to play STGs.

yeah, play mainly DBZ and SF 3 third strike.

shmups and fighting games are fun but in the end i will always prefer shmups as my "hard" genre. Getting beat down by the game feels a lot better than getting beat down by a person lol. I play 3s on fightcade by the name of pokemon123. I am not good but maybe we can play sometime!

EDIT: i guess shmups and fighting games have kind of similar execution but fighting games also have that multiplayer aspect which of course is a whole new dimension. Also drama :V,

I actually prefer playing brawlers with a second player than fighters against someone else as I am really crap at playing fighting games.

I only play samurai spirits 3, kizuna encounter and Art of Fighting 2 on the NeoGeo AES.
I own SS2/3, KE, Last-Blade 1/2, AOF2, Fatal Fury 3, Real Bout Fatal Fury 2 and King of the Monsters 2 all on the NeoGeo.
Never had any interest in playing fighters on any other system than the NeoGeo.

On the subject of 2P Shmups: I would love to team up with a second Shmupper to get into some serious raiden play. That series is amazing.

I cannot envisage how 2P can play on say DDP though as it is would simply mess up my chaining should another player play at the same time.

There's a little overlap in that they're both hardcore genres that demand some patience, discipline, and a thirst for excitement and/or achievement to be fully enjoyed.

That, and many oldschool fighter players are more likely to be well versed in oldschool 2d games in general. Which means a higher chance of being into shmups, or at least having a healthy respect for them.

And yeah, I used to be heavily into fighters. I say "used" because I still play them but not as religiously. Back then (about late 2007 through early 2013), I used to play almost nothing but fighters during all my gaming time. Now I try to divide up my time more evenly between multiplayer games, arcade games, story based games, action based games, strategy based games, etc. etc.

yes I play them too, I've been playing a lot of Samurai Spirits 2 lately. Traditionally I'm more into SNK's output, but I'm interested in everything except schoolgirl fighters.

I guess the similarities are a dense, small game world that's beeing experienced by enjoying the same thing over and over again thanks to deep gameplay in contrast to an expansive adventure game setting.

I played the hell out of SSF4 online, roughly 400 hours.

Played a lot of Blazblue before that.

I used to love MK2-MK3, but these games are pretty tame compared to the complexity of SF. I still play MK competently but can't find anybody to play with. MK3 combos are brutal as the combos deal lots of damage, running and grabbing is a little too efficient, etc. Not very balanced game at all, but pretty fun.

I completely understand why people love them but I really don't get much enjoyment out of fighting games. I enjoy shmups partly because they are predictable. Doesn't make them any easier but if I've practiced for months on a particular game my experience should show.

You could be a master in your local arcade with a fighting game and go to a different place to play the same game and get your ass handed to you. For some people though I'm sure that's the whole point and why it's exciting.

With the few fighters I ever put time into I have to say I enjoy the Street Fighter / Tekken stuff a lot more than super smash bros stuff. I don't know if serious fighting game enthusiasts even call those legitimate fighting games but meh.

Fighting games are not unpredictable. If you are a master in your local arcade and then you get crushed on another, then you were not really a master, you still have a lot to learn. Same goes for STGs really, you are not a really a "master" if your local arcade STG high score is much lower than those of Japanese arcades, as the guys from Twin Galaxies should know.

should be noted that you'll not believe how many fighting game players i've seen call shmups "hard" heh (as in like how is this beatable hard). I just try to tell them it's like a fighting game where you're fighting the designer and you need to practice to get better just like a fighting game but to no avail : (

I used to play them a lot, in my early twenties. But I only play a few, time to time, now.

I'm not really good enough to compete, so I just play against the computer. And after a while, it just sort of loses it's freshness.

It's similar for me. I've tried to get good with some games, but never liked the online or offline play enough to keep going. Online play is usually too laggy for me, or/and I'm too impatient to wait for an opponent in a lobby. I have an irl friend who also plays fighting games, but that guy never liked the few fighting games I could really get into.

So I just play fighting games casually every now and then. Incidentally, I picked up DoA 5 LR just a few days ago.

I play some fighting games too. Good at Garou, OK at 3S and used to be at an acceptable level in VF but haven't played that in a long time.
Get me close to an arcade with any of those games with good competition and I'll play my ass off.

I enjoy them, but online is really laggy for me and my IRL friends can't play for shit. So I'm stuck playing against the AI. I can do well against casuals but anytime a more dedicated player appears, I get demolished.

I like your taste.

I'm decent at Garou and rusty at VF5FS, not much else has really clicked with me.

Started learning Xrd recently, bad at VF5FS and GGXXAC. Was going to learn KOFXIII and SF3 but didn't really get started. I played an untraditional fighter called Virtual-On OT dedicated for some years (actually training for an online tourney in 2 weeks)

My fave fighters are Skullgirls, Vampire Savior, Super Turbo, and Marvel Vs Capcom 2.

I like a lot of other older fighters casually (KOF, Garou, Guilty Gear AC, etc.) but don't like the newer stuff. Except the aforementioned Skullgirls and Under Night In Birth I guess.

I hate predictability in general, which is why I prefer rng bullet patterns in my shmups

I appreciate fighting games from a distance but I repeatedly fail to get into them. Every now and then I get the urge to dig into a fighting game that I find interesting, but I quickly feel overwhelmed and lose motivation. Sometimes it's the basic mechanics that cause me to mentally check out, but other times I take the wrong approach by diving into advanced mechanics before becoming familiar with the game, kind of like trying to learn to score in a shmup before being able to comfortably 1CC it.

Maybe true for Killer Instinct and Mortal Kombat, but Skullgirls is one of the best games ever made and everyone should play it.

I lived for fighting games before I got serious with shmups, and fighting games were my entry drug into the arcade scene. These days I play most arcade genres, and shmups are my main, but I try to keep my fighting abilities decent.

I casually play more or less every fighting game that comes out, even the weird obscure shit like Koihime Musou. But beyond this I also try to keep my skills up to a decent level within at least one or two popular fighters at any given time so I can play comfortably in the arcades here whenever I want.

At a semi-serious level I've gone through lots over the years, including Garou, SSFIIT, SF4, GGXX Slash, P4A, Tekken Tag 2, DOA5, and others. Current main game is DOA5LR, and it deserves way more respect than it gets imo. Was very excited to move from Tekken Tag 2 to 7 until I actually played it. I figured it would replace DOA5 for me, but actually I find it quite inferior, especially compared to its own predecessor. Currently looking forward to SFV, KoF XIV (no seriously), and Revelator.

Well no shit, I'm more of a FG fanatic/player/etc. than Shmupper, lol. But I manage both from time to time, along with other genres suited to my niche! X3

I like fighting games and shoot-em-ups.

Part of the appeal is that these genres were popular when I was in high school, so it brings back some of the happy feelings I got from arcades and console games of my youth.

The other part of the appeal is that both genres involve a lot of learning, so a game in these genres tends to feel fresh to me for a long time.

There is a fighting game club at a local university, and a noticeable number of the core players there are also into shoot-em-ups. However, this seems to be mostly the older players, around 30+. The younger people aren't interested in shoot-em-ups.

I play shmups as a break from fighting games, I've played ST for years and have played SFIV since vanilla but haven't played so much since Ultra. I'm fortunate to have a decent local scene which should pick up again next month with V's release.
