It's a picture book.

Golden Ruler is manageable for even a mid-tier player.
The biggest unanswered question is where is the money? [1CCS]

There's an interview and some dev/artist commentary and whatnot, ie enough text for it to matter.

I'm not fussed either way, I just wonder who's going to pay $15 for an untranslated PDF.

I happened to find a physical copy of the Darius Odyssey book on an interstate visit last weekend in a Japanese bookstore and scooped it for a decent price (by Australian standards).

There's plenty of strategy.

Block the opening dense patterns with your burst.

When he goes underneath you, he alternates between a pattern that you have to move to the side to dodge, and a pattern that you have to stand still to dodge.

As a Darius series veteran, there are far worse things in the franchise. Hysteric Empress...now there's some crazy patterns.

Golden Ruler is only dumb because it's a boss built for two screens crammed into one screen; ie not as much room as you're supposed to have to dodge its attacks. But since I hear ya complainin' 'bout not being able to Burst counter it easily (ftr I have absolutely no trouble doing it; it always moves in a fixed pattern on that part afaik so just memorize the timing ok), I assume you're using either Next, Formula, or Legend (You're doing the final mission aren't you? So that means you're using Legend); so spam that fixed burst and you'll easily rape this boss. Most bosses are no threat when you've got a Fixed Burst on hand.

Also, you haven't fought Savage Ruler yet. That thing is.... well, savage.

Hi all! Here are the details on the upcoming DariusBurst CS content.

First, DariusBurst CS will be launched for PS4, PC, and Vita in Japan on 01/14/2016. The physical release of the limited edition on Vita will also launch at the same time.

Second, the Darius Odyssey artbook will now be available as DLC for the PC version, also on 01/14. The artbook can be purchased as standalone content or as part of a collector's edition that includes both the base DBCS game and the book, but you will need the base game in order to view the artbook.

The artbook includes a *lot* of content. There are illustrations, concept art, arcade flyers, interviews, route diagrams, and even comics relating to the entire Darius series. There are 176 pages in all. However, I would like to stress that the artbook will be in Japanese language only, although we're making it available to all regions.

The Darius Odyssey artbook is priced at 14.99 USD, however there will be a launch discount of 30 or 35% percent, making it approximately 10 USD at launch. The collector's edition with the bundled game and book costs 59.99 USD (before any discounts).

Saving the best bit for last, we'll be releasing new content packs based on the classic Taito games/series RayForce, Metal Black, and Night Striker. Each pack contains a new ship, new levels, and new music from those games in a kind of mini-DLC campaign. The DLC campaigns play similarly to the existing CS Mode in 16:9 aspect ratio, but my understanding is that the DLC ships will be restricted to the DLC campaigns only (however, you are able to play any of the standard ships from CS mode in the new DLC campaigns freely). We haven't finalized a price for the Taito ship packs just yet, but we're aiming to launch this content some time around late Feb/early March.

While it's not a full on game, we haven't seen new content for any of these games in a long time. Personally, I'm hyped to see what this new RayForce ship will be like!

Savage Ruler looks so cool it's hard to hate it. My current wall mission is Wani (29 shields, no powerups, ends in Savage Ruler), and just... ew. The only name on Steam LB I recognized was Erppo, and that doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

I'm actually skipping this mission for now. After Narataki, Ruminia, and Suba, I can't take another several days' worth of pounding.

So do I just give you guys my bank account number or...?

It's my understanding that the OST will be released on iTunes and other digital stores, but a Steam release is less likely.

Yes, I'm on the final mission, and I'm trying to beat it with Legend. But what if the fixed burst doesn't work?

Here's a video of Zaarock on Savage Ruler using Legend - you can use the same tactics for Golden Ruler, and it's probably easier to look at that than to try to understand what I wrote below (which is pretty much the same thing, just in writing rather than a video). The order of its attacks is exactly the same every time - if you memorize that and the tactics for each you'll find that it's actually pretty easy to execute for the most part. Many of the attacks are hard to dodge but if you've got a fixed burst you don't need to dodge them.

If you've got a fixed burst you can use that to set up walls blocking pretty much every difficult-to-dodge attack Golden Ruler throws at you. Its easier variant, Violent Ruler, is pretty much a "do you know how to use fixed burst" test in AC mode. Usually you can throw a vertical or near-vertical wall in front of you and you'll be safe. For the attack where Golden Ruler forces you over it to the other side while shooting small bullets that curve a bit towards you, you can tap the fixed burst button without moving to set up a horizontal fixed burst acting as a sort of "bridge," and pass over it while Golden Ruler and the bullets are stuck underneath. Just make sure to get over to the other side quickly so you don't waste too much energy. For the following attack where Golden Ruler moves back and forth and shoots lasers out of its shell, you can set up fixed bursts to block the extra bullets, but stay near your fixed burst pod if you do that because lasers block your burst beam. When Golden Ruler turns on its side and does that pincer attack, you can press yourself against the center-left of the screen and just stay still for the entire attack. The attack where Golden Ruler spins around like a wheel and shoots lasers can also be avoided at the very edge of the screen. I think the same holds true for the attack where he shoots horizontal laser beams at varying heights - that one's simple enough to dodge anyway if you're familiar with the boss's movement pattern, but if you're not then you can press yourself against the left of the screen and ignore the lasers (I haven't tried this in CS mode, only AC mode).

The boss is significantly more difficult if you don't have a fixed burst, mostly due to the opening attack and the attack with the homing bullets (the one where you can use fixed burst to create a bridge to cross over). Golden Ruler experienced one of the more significant spikes in difficulty when transitioning from two screens down to one. Not quite as bad as the Stare variants (Brightly Stare, Insane Stare, etc.), though.

I actually find the counterburst on Violent/Golden Ruler to be the easiest of any boss (except maybe Ancient Barrage) since it sweeps across the screen at a very regular pace without speeding up or slowing down much. It's kind of hard to describe, but you should dive towards the beam as it's sweeping down towards you, then press the burst button just before impact. This holds true for other bosses' burst beams that sweep across the screen in a similar fashion, adjusting accordingly for the speed of the beam's motion. You could also just ignore counterbursting and stay at the bottom of the screen close to the boss, which is what ships without burst beams should do.
xxx1993 wrote:But what if the fixed burst doesn't work?
You better hope it does work. But in case it doesn't here's a video of Icarus handling the boss in AC mode with Gaiden - you might be able to glean some strategies from that. Here's a video by Keres of Violent Ruler, also with Gaiden, annotated with his strategies. By the way, it's generally better to shield yourself near the origin of the fixed burst rather than far away from it, since there it's less likely that something will get in the way of the beam and let something else through.

Disappointed since I never went on iTunes in my life.

I'm semi-hype for the DLC but too bad you can't use them in AC mode.

I got so burnt out of the grinning in CS mode for points that I just stick to AC mode. AC mode at least to me has more tension and more funner than CS mode.

Insanity comes because they sell them all in packs together. They should have been selling them separetely, each costume/set for each character. But they are too lazy for that or something.

Load up CS mode, pick Legend/Next/Formula even if it's not a preset, give yourself eleventy billion shields, ignore the enemies in the stage and practice moving the fixed burst until you get it. Way easier than learning counterburst.

I had my first encounter with Golden last night using Gaiden and it wasn't too awful. Savage is definitely worse. Practice the fixed burst like I said and get back to it.

There's nothing to teach. You place it, stop shooting, move to the other side of where you want it to point (with Legend), wait for it to pivot into position, then start shooting again.

Seriously dawg, just practise that shiz. There's really nothing to it. Angling it is simple to do. Mastering it is equally as simple.

The basic technique to set up a vertical wall in front of you with Legend:
  • Stop firing.
  • Move near the bottom of the screen where you want the base of the wall to be, but leave a bit of room to move further downwards.
  • Tap the fixed burst button (or double-tap the regular burst button).
  • Move downwards and forwards a bit so you're positioned underneath and to the right of the burst pod, but still close to it. The fixed burst pod should start spinning upwards, erecting a wall crossing upwards across most of the screen.
  • When you're satisfied with the laser's position, start firing again. It doesn't need to be perfectly vertical (getting it vertical might take too long), it just needs to cross most of the screen to create a safe area. As long as you don't want the fixed burst to move, you should keep holding the fire button.
  • Press the fixed burst button again when you're done with the fixed burst.
In terms of keyboard controls, it's "Let go of Z, tap V, move down and right, hold Z."

You can refine it further than this, for example you can angle the burst even if you're pressed against the top or bottom of the screen, but this should be a foolproof way to get started. The same technique works for Formula too, but for Next you should move straight upwards instead of downwards+forwards to aim the fixed burst upwards.

To set up a horizontal "bridge":
  • Keep firing.
  • Tap the fixed burst button.
  • Keep firing.
  • Press the fixed burst button again when you're done with the fixed burst.
In terms of keyboard controls, it's simply "tap V." This works for all fixed burst ships (Legend, Next, Formula).

I haven't seen any myself, but I haven't unlocked many of the missions yet so maybe there's one I don't know of. If you can find Violent Ruler that would also work for practice, since all the Ruler variants share the same attacks in the same order, just with small variations on each attack that don't really change much for fixed-burst ships. The fastest ways to reach Golden Ruler I've seen are actually in Chronicle mode - go to AC mode, pick Chronicle mode, pick infinite lives mode if you just want to practice, choose the very first star system that's presented to you, then press right once and you'll get a mission that starts you off with Mirage Castle, then a stage (which also presents lots of opportunities to practice fixed burst, such as the meteor shower at the start), then Golden Ruler.

Also, a correction to my previous post: With Legend and Formula instead of moving straight down you should move down and forwards just a bit and wait there until the fixed burst is in position. This helps nudge the fixed burst into a more vertical position. With Next you still want to move straight up since Next's fixed burst is more sensitive. Sorry, I don't play Legend that much and I forget how to do stuff until I actually try it.

If you want to set up the burst beam quickly, try to stay close to the burst pod. The closer you stay, the more sensitive it'll be to your movements, since it works kind of like a lever where the burst pod is the fulcrum.

The best way to beat him is by practicing instead of constantly double posting on a forum. It's called the edit button, man.

Just recorded a quick video (still processing at the moment) showing some fixed bursts with Legend. I turned on Padlight so you can see what keys I'm pressing (the direction keys are obvious, the bottom row of buttons is Z, X, and C, and the middle button is V, the fixed-burst button). I'm a bit rusty at this but hopefully it gives some idea of the basics. I can do the same with Golden Ruler (in AC mode, since I don't feel like finding him in CS mode) if you want.

For the general case of fixed bursting with Legend (aiming it in any direction you want), you want to make this kind of circling motion around the fixed burst pod to make the pod spin in the same way.

NTSC-J: You know STGs are in trouble when you have threads on how to introduce them to a wider audience and get more people playing followed by threads on how to get its hardcore fan base to play them, too.

Fastest Golden Ruler I've found (so far) is near the upper-right of the map. Substage: Ochiogu - Warning, six zones (three stages, one of the Stares, stage, GR), burst autocharge.

I wanna practice, but when I reach the boss, I'm usually almost half dead because I keep getting my ass kicked by the obstacles that's all over the stage. The only reason why I wanted Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours is because I wanted to fight Gigantic Bite.
