Classic Game Room launches Patreon campaign

Most of you will know about CGR, what you may not have seen is that Mark was possibly going to have to stop doing the show due to the changing landscape of Youtube, competition and falling ad revenue. Well he's launched a Patreon campaign to see how far the show can be funded that way, and if you really like oldschool gaming shows made by people who really love games, you should check it out:

Best of luck to him. He's a great narrator with a very cool voice.

Kind of offtopic but I'd love Mark to join Shmups if he has not already.

He has nothing but praise for the genre.
Borderline unhealthy obsession with Truxton but that's normal round here.

Anyone know if he has joined the forum?

No, this game is not Space Invaders.

Definitely backing this, CGR accounts for 80% of my youtube watching. Was sad a few months back when he announced he quit.

Can't say I'll miss CGR Undertow, except for TJ's reviews, his were fun.

$10000 a month is "business as usual" for CGR. God damn - good going. 8)

It sounds a lot until you start adding up the costs, it needs to cover all his costs plus essentially be a full time working wage.

I really hope he hits the 10k, $4140 right now.

I don't really do any if this subscribe stuff on youtube but when I do go on it, CGR binges are the first port of call.

I love how he tries to be positive and enthusiastic about all the games he reviews. And the running jokes are used sparingly enough that they don't get tiresome.

It's just an awesome show. Definitely backing this.

yeah but what are his costs, other than his wage? 99% of the stuff he reviews is sent in by viewers, which is amazing to me in and of itself. other than that what is there? electricity? a new camera every 6 years or something? it doesn't seem like it has huge overheads to me.

(I'm saying this as someone who enjoys cgr btw)

You know what I really like?

He doesn't resort to numbers.
I can't stand the big name channels that either try to be rude and edgy or dead and clinical when reviewing games.
I hate it when people unfamiliar with a genre pick it apart for not playing like the latest MMO or FPS.
Case in point: People born in 1993 saying shmups are too short because you can finish in an hour by credit feeding so they have no replay value.

His greatest strength as a reviewer is that he is true to his own likes.
Mark likes the fine things in life, Truxton, El Caminos, Pinball, Arcade machines, and wood grain electronics.
He seems like a kind person who is not ashamed to enjoy things from the past as valid forms of entertainment.

He rents, warehouse, he has/had staff, there were 3-4 reviewers, plus production staff, business taxes, electricity, insurance (I bet this one is pretty big), website costs, etc...

He actually bought quite a few games himself as well, though many were donated.

Running a business, any business is far more expensive than people expect, lots of hidden costs you don't think about until you get into it.

Plus the guy has to pay himself... at least $50k a year, at a bare minimum, it wouldn't be worth it to do CGR for less.

$50k/yr = $4166 a month, so the $5000/mo minimum amount makes sense to me. Shooting a 5 minute video would easily occupy an 8 hour day, if not longer.

It's very normal for youtube earnings to slump heavily from 1st January every year, so can understand why this is being done, though it makes me wish I could do something like this too.
Hope the best for Mark too.

What's the reason of that? It's not as if watching videos costs money.

I'd imagine it has to do with advertising clickthroughs. After all, Christmas is just over; everyone's just spent a lot of money buying gifts, and isn't thinking about spending much more.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes, it's due to the rush in advertising spending during December and the subsequent fall in January. It seems to be a well-known phenomenon among Youtube partners.

Yeah, it's the drop in advertising after Christmas, if you are totally dependant on online earnings then you'd have to cover it up somehow, so having a Patreon is seen as a more stable way at the moment.

The number keeps going up slowly by slowly... I really hope that he will reach $10k. Nevertheless, I'm glad to see that CGR will continue, even if it might be part-time.

This is the first patreon that I've supported. It was pretty cool to see the extended cut of his EDF 4.1 review. I'm really looking forward to the podcast.

Yeah, I just want that magic 10k mark to be hit so he can keep this as a full time job.

According to his newest update email, he's having Patreon supporters pull out and he's having to downsize, frankly I'm shocked he didn't move the show to his garage/basement, he could have made the show more sustainable at a lower funding point had he done that earlier.

I understand why he's losing patrons though, these worthless whodefeatz videos are almost exclusively what he produces now, and I'm starting to wonder where my $5/month is going...

I have to say I'm a little disappointed in the output lately, I've never produced a YT show but his output used to be much better, hopefully he turns it around.

As a side note, Derek from CGR Undertow (which I was pretty lukewarm to) has a new Podcast called Manthology and I actually quite liked both episodes so far, being the same age, I relate quite a bit.

The regular videos are still great but I do not understand what those whodefeatz ones are meant to be in aid of. Just seems moronic!

That and there's so many of them... I sometimes liked the weird or short reviews where he reviews a beer or a super niche hot wheels or something, but they were sporadic so they were a welcome change, now it's just whodefeatz spam nearly every day... c'mon Mark!

I love CGR but the Whodefeatz stuff is just stupid. What's the point of this?

There's no effort required for those and they also happen to have no substance and be of absolute no interest. Worthless, as you said, broken harbour
