Yes you can. For the set where he shoots them up and down, you just move forward between them. For the ones in one set when he is moving up and down, you want to lead them away from where you're going to be moving, then once they speed up, quickly go the opposite way.

Suba is kill.

Nothing like busting your ass for ~10 hours on one stupid level just to end up second-to-last place.

If anyone needs me, I'll be crying in a corner.

Well shit, then. I guess I spent the last hour cranking out a Suba clear for nothing lol. Oh well, it's already almost uploaded, might as well throw it up there.

Hey, I spent 30+ hours just trying to clear QUZ without taking any damage. And... wellllll... I did happen to get 8th place in the Z Zone rankings while I was at it, so it wasn't all that bad...

Wow. I really just wasn't point-blanking as much as I thought I was, apparently.

And damn, 120mil going into GT. Most I've managed is 113. =/

Good run!

Gave it another go just now and did much better on my first try lol
Perfect Thousand bullets and 13 arm when I got to Great Thing. Tanked on the GT fight as usual, but still did a no-miss with 4 arm left, killed GT even faster, and moved up ONE spot in the Suba rankings!!!1

I tried again as well and got a score I'm satisfied with. Moving on because I'm only at 53 missions completed and I'd like to finish CS mode before summer vacay so I can start on AC.

What on earth are you supposed to do on the asteroid fields in zone J? Between the huge asteroids and the giant ships, the game just keeps chucking solid walls at me, and then there's the hilarious "circling serpent in a really heavy asteroid field" bit after that which I have absolutely no clue WTF to do about.

What ship are you using? Fixed burst, burst beam, bomb, etc., could all be potential options, depending.

Oh, I misread slightly, I thought you were just talking about the snakes/asteroids section only. For the first part of the stage, you should be able get all of the big rocks to move, though some of them are a little slow at doing so.

For the snake-asteroid-field section, you could either use the fixed burst to shield yourself from a lot of the asteroids, or use the burst beam for most of it.

Here's a replay that shows how it could be done.

Can you tell exactly what he's doing at 10:23? I can't quite make it out, but it looks like he's colliding with the giant ship yet not getting hit somehow?

He's doing exactly what it looks like. Getting as close as possible without taking damage.
First he collects the gold powerup to clear all bullets and destroy its turrets, then he moves in and destroys the hull of the ship, and then moves into where it was, all in one motion. All made possible by the gold pickup, which damages all enemies on screen (but is only strong enough to ohko the weak ones). It's kinda hard to tell what with the low quality of the video and him hiding in the explosion caused by the destroyed hull.

On an unrelated topic, doing a quick BFK run with Gaiden gave me a new respect for that ship. I can't believe how easily that ship ripped through that route.

EDIT: And, switching to Gaiden also let me get the BEJ clear. Black Hole Bomb solved almost all of the main problems I was having in J; dealing with Ancient Barrage without a fixed burst was hairy, but doable, and easier than doing the asteroid field in J with the Counterburst method.

That's ADH, ADI, BEJ, and BFK down. Only CGL remains.

...and soon after that, I got the 65mil and beat the alternate route. So glad it's done.

So there a multiple routes that branch out from stages? It feels like my CS map is running into a few dead ends. Does it depend on your final score?

Some missions have an alternate branch that triggers if you have a certain score by a certain stage. It'll tell you in advance when hovering over the node in the map whether there's an alternate route and what score you need for that alternate route, and if you trigger it it'll bring up a selection dialog similar to the branching paths selection in Original/EX mode. It all happens within that one node on the map, nothing to do with the structure of the map.

By the way, here's a map of CS mode in case you're lost: https://twitter.com/DegiGames/status/684488049313579008

Only some stages (I've so far only encountered two) will have an alternate route, which the game will tell you in the stage description, like "Alternate Route Condition: 65,000,000pts." The stage won't be marked as clear until you beat the alternate route, it seems.

EDIT: D'oh! Shepardus beat me to it, lol.

Wow, according to that map I'm nearing the end of CS already.

Would be good for some smart fella to do a comprehensive map showing all the stages with alt routes and opening requirements.

I'm actually trying to play the final mission with the preset ship, to memorize it, but the problem is there are too many enemies and obstacles to get through, and I keep getting my ass handed to me by Golden Ruler.

Thanks Shephardus and NoMaD for the clarification; at least I know I am not missing out on important things through the alternate routes.

I also realize, with that map posting, that I am nowhere near any of the big stuff! I haven't found Azure Nightmare yet, for starters.
