Actually I play a wide range of genres, and enjoy the experience as a whole.
I don't feel the need to break them down and analyze their constituent parts with autistic tenacity for the sake of some pseudo science; only to use it for waving my wang at somebody over a forum.

The whole idea of FE is that you have your little army of characters who try to make it through the war together. You're encouraged to use many characters. So don't say "nah fuck that, I'm just gonna use one guy and break the game" and then complain that it's possible! That just seems silly to me.

No, we can't, because it wasn't. There are way too many "good" games that are actually really bad, and way too many "bad" games that are decent at worst. Games get these titles purely through superficial bullshit, and never through anything relating to the actual game itself. For instance who still plays Space Invaders today ? When it came out it was fucking awesome and there were entire arcades filled with only that game.

Chrono Trigger is not held back by technological progress, not even in graphics; too many people want a game that's just like Chrono Trigger and too many people want games that use such graphical capability for that to ever be true. Nothing has come along to try and best Chrono Trigger, and any attempts to do so have been completely forgotten. Noone wants a game that's just like Space Invaders, because Space Invaders has very little to it to begin with. The entirety of what was left of the '70s and all of the early '80s was filled with games trying to best Space Invaders, and many later projects over the years have also tried to do so. Games do not age; they were simply never that good in the first place.

Yeah, I might scoff at anyone saying "Ocarina of Time". But I have to remember, it's not about whether it's the best balanced, best designed, most competitive...whatever. It's about what games had the biggest impact on people and which they have the fondest memories attached to.

Odin Sphere might be a bad game by most of my metrics, but it's also one of the games that had a tremendous impact on me, and gave me a great amount of fulfillment. Doesn't mean I'd recommend it to anyone, or even bring myself to call it best anything (as I said, I can't personally answer this thread's question), but I still love it. Based on the OP and what people have been answering, I think that's what this thread is about. And I don't see anything wrong with that.

It's okay for people to say things that you think are wrong and you don't have to get so angry trying to correct people. If you're "tired" of "deal[ing] with it for far too long," just mark it as read and move on, nobody's forcing you to "deal with it." There's plenty of threads here and entire subforums that I simply mark as read without checking at all because I have no interest in having anything to do with those discussions and it's not my responsibility to ensure that people don't say incorrect things. Well this thread certainly got strange a few pages back! Anyway if I could pick one game to play right now that I would consider my favourite ever it would be Final Fantasy 9.

The characters are all interesting and diverse, the story is REALLY FUCKING GOOD and I personally found the game pretty dan hard back in the day. It had some legitimately tough boss fights for me!

A close second would be MGS 3 with the original PS2 control scheme.

So no one wants shmups? Shmups wouldn't be around if it wasn't for games like Space Invaders. Some of those games trying to best Space Invaders turned out quite well and were very influential. Power ups probably wouldn't be around if it wasn't for games like Galaga. Not to mention that update versions of SI like Super Space Invaders '91, Space Invaders '95, and Space Invaders Extreme 1 and 2 turned out extremely well.

Space Invaders has quite a bit of strategy to it for the time it came out. Some examples are the scoring of the UFOs being determined by the beat of the invaders, being able to pass though the bullets of the invaders when they are right above the bottom, and shooting a column of invaders to delay when they come down.

Speaking of scams, "dairy free" to me seemed like another way of saying "still has just about as much lactose as the real thing."

@ Xyga: Well, I'm sure this won't please you, but I did think about this topic a bit on and off recently. I feel I couldn't choose. Why?

- I could try to choose a "jewel box" of a game that is short enough to do most everything perfectly, but I actually tend to get bored with those games. Granted, maybe I'm conflating things here, but I would not feel right saying a game was "the best ever" when it's not actually still entertaining to me.
- On a related note, giving people what they want is a good way to earn the wrath of the critics. As a result, we get Opus13 saying that Half-Life 2 - perhaps the most influential game of the 2000s - is a "dead end," and Jim Sterling posted a mostly untethered review of Resi6. Of course there's a hint of truth behind what both guys are saying - in particular, HL2 could be a dead end in the sense that Skyrim seems likely to be a dead end for the Elder Scrolls series. After a gravity gun, and a portal gun, Valve has played around with some of the most fundamental rules of the universe that can easily be turned into point-and-click game mechanics. Likewise, after you can shout a dragon out of the sky and ride it (and repeat that an infinite number of times), where the hell does Bethesda take The Elder Scrolls? Being simply human beings with a limited perspective has not tempered our expectations of having our minds blown open by new games. For my own part, I think that eventually we will have to settle for tried-and-true game mechanics being applied to "new" types of games - if investment in new adventures using "boring" old game technology can survive the upgrade cycle. No doubt I am of a split mind about the possibilities of augmented reality...any game that gets me out of my chair would be a godsend, I think.

Like an 'if you had to live the rest of your life on a deserted island' chat, only a bit more precise/tidy so it wouldn't lose its meaning and purpose even before reaching the bottom of the first page.

Damn maybe I should have made a separate [discussion/fight thread] from the start to avoid this mess.
It's still fine though, I've seen much worse in other communities I used to frequent, like 1/2 of the discussions ending like the gymnasium in Carrie.
