Just got my very first 1cc playing Galactic Attack on Saturn with my Japanese pad. Ive had it for a couple years and played it casually. Only the last couple months did I start playing it more serious. I kept choking on the level 7 boss, but this time he went down. Not sure how I feel about doing future shmup goals, but it took A LOT of time and energy. For now Im ready to go back to my typical rpgs and adventure games, lol.

^Nice! congrats on your first 1cc. Galactic Attack (AKA Ray Force AKA Layer Section) is a good game too. SAT pads are the best.

Congrats; I've owned Galactic Attack for years and still haven't 1CC'd it (though I've been meaning to). It's a brutally hard game, especially after stage 4.

Not sure why it's sideways, but you get the idea.

Reached Larsa with three bombs and an one extra ship. Wound up getting all the way to the very end of her two handed pattern before dying with no bombs left. I had three bombs as her tail pattern started and ain't gonna lie - I bomb spammed the fuck outta that thing.

I would have had this one months ago if I didn't have fucking STG ADD:D
Nice! Those speed rings at the end are scary as fuck. Claimed many a life from me.

Thanks guys.

Great work Gamer707 - That is an impressive clear!
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

Thank you all for the kind words. If you control rank and don't keep stocking up lives , its not too bad. For me level 6 was actually hardest of them all. Even the last level wasn't as hard. So yea, don't stock up lives and for every time you lose a ship you gain an extra one will help keep rank at a decent level. This was my survival stragety. Unless you're playing for score. That is a whole different approach.

I don't know if it's different on Saturn, but rank control was useless for me when 1cc'ing Rayforce on arcade.

You have so few resources, that every single one counts. You can't throw them away. Furthermore, rank seems to about max out by the penultimate stage (6) anyway, so suiciding to make stage 4-5 easier when they can be no-missed with some finesse anyway never made much sense. I didn't rank control at all when I got my first 1cc.

Congrats though!

I cant say anything about the arcade version, but I know on the Saturn , its a bitch by level 5 if I haven't given up 1 or 2 lives. The AI will go WAY beyond the call of duty to kill you. Besides if you give up 1 or 2 lives you'll get them back with decent scoring anyway.

A few months ago I managed to 1lc Cotton on Mame.

That was a pretty good feeling, I think it was the first arcade game I ever 1lc.

It was my first 1 credit clear on the game too, but it's one of those games "Die and you are screwed".

Bullet speed does increase dramatically on stage 5 if you no miss there, but in my experience:

-It's still no-missable

-Rank decrease effects everything immediately. If you die, at high rank, it's not like Garegga where you can't bring the rank back down. Everything gets easier immediateliy, so there's no reason not to shoot for a no miss.

-Stage 6 and onward, I have never seen a difference whether no missing it or not. Therefore all the resources you sacrificed to rank control are purely for stage 5...which is not nearly as hard as stage 6 or 7 anyway. You are better off saving your resources for 6 and 7, no missing to them if you can.

I just wanted to address this because I see a lot of people try to rank control Rayforce, and it's kind of a tragic waste of time. Resources are TIGHT and you can barely control anything in Rayforce. It's going to hit max at stage 6 whether you like it or not, so you just need to focus on getting there with as many resources as you can.

For the arcade version at least.

Hey Squire. This is off topic, but when Im ready to shmup again, I would like to really get into Saturn Radiant Silvergun. Whats the rank like in that game. Anything of note to know? Any advice for a so so RS player? Not so much scoring , but rather Im referring to survival play.

In Radiant Silvergun you're forced to score to at least a moderate extent in order to survive because weapon power is tied to the score you earn with your different weapons. If you don't get good chains and boss destruction bonuses in the early stages you'll really struggle in the last stage or two. There's no rank system that I know of, and if there is it's not significant.

Got my 250th shmup 1CC*! I know, I should try to clear more noteworthy games, get better scores etc.; I will! I also don't pride myself on this number, I'm perfectly aware that most of those games were utterly trivial. I just enjoy playing a cornucopia of different titles, looking for hidden gems, competent little titles and even plain odd surprises. I lastly am convinced that it also helped me to get better as a result, even terrible barrel bursts like Dimension Force or Battle Squadron can be rather helpful in learning some basic skills. It was a great journey so far, I'm interested to see what the future will bring. :)

*You may or may not agree with some of the games being "real" shmups or not, I tend to count hybrids that contain sufficient elements (Rendering Ranger yes, GS Mikami no) of the genre; multidirectional shooters are totally part of the family! I excluded a few games where I personally think that they venture too far into other areas (Gremlins 2 on the NES is moreso a vertical platformer in my book), and I also counted stuff like the two different modes on the MD Senjou no Ookami II as a single game even though they are so vastly dissimilar to each other that you might as well consider them two independent entries.

Awesome, that is one hell of an achievement! 250 clears is no joke, I doubt there are many people in the entire world that even come close to that number! Some day you gotta come up with a 1cc difficulty list for all of these games although it probably be hard to remember them all at this point lol.

This isn't really correct about Garegga, unless you get a truly extreme number of extra lives. The penalty for carrying extra lives in Garegga isn't terribly steep; the rank loss from being at three lives and quickly dying twice isn't enough different from the rank drop from dropping from two lives to one twice to worry about too much.

Batrider is a different story.

Heh, Batrider is actually where I've experienced the "near impossible situation" result of failed rank control. Icarus says it's the same for Garegga, so I took his word on that one, at least.

According to the numbers in the ST, if you carry around more than four lives, you could end up pretty fucked rank-wise, since there's a big difference between how much rank is shed if you have three extra lives after death or if you have four extra lives after death. EDIT: But, obviously with how Garegga's score mechanics work and how it scoring tends to be a lives -> resources -> points engine, you shouldn't be flying around with five lives anyways.

Otherwise, the way you'd end up fucked rank-wise in Garegga is by either setting the autofire rate too high too early, or by dropping the medal chain too much (medal values 100-400 spike the rank HARD, but past 400 they barely touch the rank at all), or by powering up with small shot power-ups too much.

On Garegga; What can make the game impossible with higher rank is if you're playing as one of the weaker ships and don't have enough power to destroy BH2's grenades and destructible bullets. If you get a clusterfuck pattern at too high rank you're pretty fucked no matter what you do.
The primary purpose of rank control is to control enemy health.

Sorry to double post but man, I'm pretty pleased to have finally 1-ALL'd Strikers 1945.

At the beginning of STGT week 3 I was thinking "fuck this. never again." But managed to suck it up and scrub through that first loop.
Keep calm and carry on, a stiff upper lip with my German plane..
This alone makes STGT worth it for me this year, considering I had given up on strikers the year prior.

That's enough psikyo for a lifetime, however.
