based on videos I can find of the game, the refresh seems set slightly too high in MAME at the moment (60hz)

I've adjusted it to a 'measured' value used by several other sets in the driver (57.42hz)

depending how pedantic you are about things I guess you might want to make the same change (if trap15 permits it)

Go ahead. You can do this without modifying the driver and recompiling by turning on cheats and changing the game's refresh rate to the mentioned 57.42. No other values are allowed.

I'm kinda dumb, and didn't read any rules before I posted a score in the other thread. That said, seriously, the hell is this game.

Fun facts about this game
The Evil Empire needs to be stopped. Their dictatorship has gone on for long enough. The rebel’s forces have been nearly wiped out thanks to a new weapon that fries all the computer components in the Rebel’s aircraft. They call on two old-timer ace pilots that fought in a past war. Their old planes are over forty years old which makes them immune to the Empire’s weapon. The two pilots agree to join the Rebels who upgrade the planes with a couple modern weapons.
Kamiyu Binta - 4.758.000 - 4-3

This guy was clearly on cocaine. He already had the WR but got even farther in 2002, 10 years after he could have escaped this game.

Japanese wiki has the difficulty set as harder than a 2-ALL of the original dodonpachi, probably because you can't see anything in the game.

I was wondering why it seemed like I survived getting hit so many times - I thought there was lifebar shenanigans afoot.

This. I was looking at the bomb pickups thinking 'that doesn't resemble a jellybean in the slightest'.

Check out the Zelda CD-i level graphics that wait at the end of the first loop. Isn't it amazing:

I'm in an existential crisis here and I need some reinsurance: I'm not the only one to think that this game is horrendous, right? Sand Scorpion wasn't particularly stellar, but it was fairly inoffensive for the most parts in my opinion. This game, though...

I like it better than Sand Scorpion. At least there's no slowdown and boss fights aren't sitting in one place for 5 minutes and shooting at destructible bullets...

It's also bad in a funny way, while Sand Scorpion was bad in a soul crushingly tedious way.

my bet is on 'raiden2dx Raiden II (harder, Raiden DX hardware)'

just because.. you know, it's a game people love, but in a way nobody is used to playing (he wouldn't be so cruel as to make you play one of the 'NEW' versions however)

I'll concede that Zing Zing Zip might look like the better game at first. Annoying, but at least somewhat competent. The programmers made absolutely sure to trash the players by the time stage 5 starts, however. Way too many lightning-fast bullets (including the horrendous visibility, of course) which will require you to bomb constantly, I'm pretty darn sure that there are many situations where bombing is virtually the only way to survive. Stage 6 features incredibly cheap rocket formations (like the ones in the previous stages, but much faster - if you don't sit in just the right position you're dead) on top of that. Sand Scorpion's second loop has a lot of rather tawdry moments, too, but at least the first loop is fair, albeit partially dreary.

This game is smooth and cool, like jellybeans

Sand Scorpion just has a shit framerate ALL the time. Perpetual slowdown which only gets worse when things appear on screen. It really made me appreciate Raiden though.

I'd take this game over SS any day.

The chick with the bombs is admiral "jellybean" of the rebels. The lore of this game is incredibly deep and fulfilling.

Turns out this move is mandatory to get through stages 6 and 7, there are obstacles/missiles that will kill you no matter what if you don't have temporary invincibility.

You're going to clear this thing by the end of the week, aren't you, ProjectAKo? I feel so sorry for you.

That's not CD-i at all, it's just kinda hard to put crazy caricatures like that into such a low res. Lots of games suffer from this.

CD-i is so many things more than "this artstyle looks kinda strange", so many things more.

I hated this game a lot at the start but somehow, it doesn't seem all that bad anymore. I think I might even like it.

Even the epileptic seizures aren't so triggering after a while.

The 2P side has faster horizontal movement and slower vertical movement in this game compared to 1P side, by the way. Worse for shotgunning, but the speed is good for the ridiculous bullet speeds of stage 5-7.
