What year is it?

Post by malc »

27th October 2010

Wow, that was a rush.

Last night, I perfected the machine. How I kept it secret, I don't know. It was originally built in the spare room, but the power requirements and physical space needed meant I had to move it bit by bit into the garage. Doing it under cover of darkness helped, but occasionally I had to get the larger items, like the damned flux capacitors moved, and these took a while to shift on my own, what with my hernia playing up again.

Packing my trusty North Face rucksack full of oaty biscuits (much better for the cholesterol levels) and copious amounts of diet Vimto, I sat sweatily in the seat. Pressing the large red button, checking one last time I had paid my rent for the next five years, I set the controls to November 2015.

Nothing happened. I was rather expecting at the very least, swathes of fluttering pink bullets, or some sort of 8bit pixel starfield, but nothing.

Disappointed, I stepped over something that looked like cat carcass that had been mouldering for, say, five years, and noticed with alarm that my beard was a completely different shade of black (grey), and whooped in jubilation! Brilliant! It must have worked!

So, instead of waiting months for each new shmup release, I've got 5 years to catch up on.

Hello old friends and possible new ones. Sorry for the absence, you know... RL. The longer it was, the more disconnected and irrelevant I felt. Still alive, though.

Welcome to 2015! Don't go near the news, it's been an incredibly depressing few years. Instead head on over to Steam and marvel at the fact that Cave has just released a game there for the first time ever. And the port is kind of ok!

This literally felt like a real life anime plot-twist. A guy I've never even heard of pops up in the forum, with some old logo and a "Site Admin" title.
I thought that system11 was the real grandmaster?

system11 is the server admin of the forum, yes. However, Malc is the man behind shmups.com. Y'know, the site where this forum originates from. He also ran the forum itself several incarnations ago.

The forum, hell, the whole western shmup community as it is today wouldn't exist without Malc starting it all up so many years ago.
No matter how good a game is, somebody will always hate it. No matter how bad a game is, somebody will always love it.

I'd have thought by now that bears had become sentient.

However just have to make do with buying the same Cave game all over again on this Steam thing. ta for heads up :)

Whoa...the rumors are true. He exists:D

Thanks for putting this joint together, and it is good to have you back.
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.

While you're there don't forget to check out Crimzon Clover: World Ignition! It's not quite a sentient bear but I'd say it's more than good enough. And keep an eye out for the upcoming Dariusburst: Chronicle Saviours, that game's looking pretty promising.

Hey James!!

Eeehhh, I sort of forgot I still had it. Not fired anything up much this year. It's one of my last two cabs, and all mamed up with a completely outsized monitor wedged in it. Not even a europlay any more, sort of a large monster with ripped guts now.

Even though I mostly live in a campervan these days, still need a house for my precious shmup and cab stuff. Must add you to my will, you can have it when I have no need for it in (bullet) hell.

Ohhhh, thanks, 'll get me some Darius, for Vita probably. Roll on Nov 30th. It seems like only a while ago I wandered into an arcade in Glasgow and saw the hulking original.

Realising that was 25 years ago makes me feel incredibly ancient. Wait, 30 years. Time-lagged.

There are 30 year olds kicking about now that were but a fertilised egg when that happened.

Ah, its still a jamma cab, the mamey bits sit outside it. And was offered a med res monitor so thought it would be rude to refuse, replacing the one that got a bit damaged when I moved house last.

You'd be able to restore it to... oh, you wouldn't. I've hacked up the control panel too with a spinner and far too many extra buttons.

It'll always be a monster.

Malc? I know this name... I think... I tink I read it below a few reviews, on a page that had quite a bit to do with my conversion to shmupdom...

So it is true... the ancients are awakening....

What's next?

The return of Yagawa? Oh my... :D

Btw, although I don't know you: welcome back on your farm. :)

Wow, the comedy character that I found whilst idly searching for Shmups online at University back in 1999 I think it was.

How time flies. I liked the humour and back in those days before I bought a Shmup I used download the review if you had it then copy it to disk and copy it then to my Linux machine at home - how times have changed but the Xenocide files were a wonderful resource all those years ago to me then and opened me up to the world of Shmups a lot more.

What happened to Roger Post aka 'The Postman'?

Lovely to see you appear again, Malc :D

Wow never seen the admin ever make a post here lol. Quite surprised that the moderators and members of the site were able to keep afloat without the admin onboard for 5 years. Welcome back!

Can we resurrect the main site now that the admin is back?

The forum has been run separately for many years now (the newest incarnation since 2005, various hosted providers before that), it lives on a server I look after.

Exactly, I am admin in name only. Probably shouldn't even be tbh. System11 is the main man and has always been on the forum. My previous forum incarnations were dreadful efforts before forum software became standardised. Without him there would be no forum today.

All i really do is shmup as much as i can in my spare time, and think about how to update shmups.com the site in a relevant way, and then realise it will take a lot to make it modern, and then... just keep it the way it is.

It's not doing any harm sitting there, maybe will lose my job or a leg or something and stop working and cycling (my main hobby at the mo to help battle diabetes from overchocolating in an earlier life) and then get back into shmups.com-ing.

System11 is the boss of this forum, and the rest of the honourable mods, and everybody esle who is active and contributes.

Thank you to all, and thanks for the welcome back too :). malc

Welcome back. Long time no see! You picked a good time, there's been some good (re-released) shmups lately as well as a few new ones. The last 5 or so years did yield a few gems as well.

Enjoy!
