Shmups with complex patterns but slow bullets?
Shmups with complex patterns but slow bullets?
New to the genre, and looks like one of the things i have trouble with is fast moving bullets (guess i'm getting old here), but i have something of a knack for squeezing out dense patterns. I was wondering if there were any shmups that focused mostly on pattern nagivation.

The "Touhou" series comes most immediately to mind; most of the titles have demos floating around, give them a try.

^^^I've always thought of Cave games as being mostly medium speed.

Touhou is arguably the definitive "slow bullets in dense and elaborate patterns" series. The patterns can actually get pretty fast especially in the higher difficulty modes, but it's still your best bet.
CAVE's games vary quite a bit, sometimes even within the same game (Mushihimesama and Mushihimesama Futari's different modes, slowdown in later CAVE games, hyper rank in Dodonpachi Daioujou, Espgaluda's kakusei mechanic), so it's hard to make a call about them in general. The first Dodonpachi would probably be right up your alley though. The first loop is mostly slow-medium in speed and I find it very fun to dodge in it. ESP Ra.De. and Espgaluda may also be good choices but I have little experience with either. Same goes for the Maniac modes in Mushihimesama and Mushihimesama Futari (Original is the "easier" mode but focuses more on sparse and fast patterns).

You may want to try out the Steam release of Mushihimesama. I'm having a blast playing the Novice version of Ultra mode. Once I get down all the patterns I'll try to step up to Original and see how that goes.

Espgaluda, besides being a nice intro to the genre for newer players, is an enjoyable game to dodge in I find. You can also get the 'slow and dense' effect with kakusei, as mentioned before.
Progear, while not generally considered one of Cave's better efforts, is another example of reasonably paced shots that tend to fill the screen pretty often.
