I'm working on it..
You're sure to be in a fine haze about now, but don't think too hard about all of this. Just go out and kill a few beasts. It's for your own good. You know, it's just what hunters do! You'll get used to it.
Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Ok, fair enough, I won't do that.Jonst wrote:^ don't do it down. It's good enough, the final fight is a tedious bitch despite the relative ease of the rest of the game.
I really enjoy Galuda's final boss, I think it's a really fun fight and the best final boss I've encountered.
As for what's next, I think I'm going to try and do Batsugun normal.

Nice job! As much of a bastard as he was, I thought Jakou was a pretty amazing fight too.

Spoiler

I'm thinking of moving on to Metal Black (just played it for the first time today, and it's awesome!), but then again this was just one route; I've barely scratched the surface of this game even ignoring scoring...

Cleared six loops of the NES Gradius before I finally bit the dust in 7-3. While this is certainly not a remarkable achievement in itself it feels exquisitely illustrious for the sheer nostalgic value.
Way back then I thought this and Life Force were impossible games. I could never beat them and was pretty sad about that since they were so much fun to play. While I admit that I cursed quite a bit I never considered them to be "unfair" or badly designed, I just assumed that I was flat out too bad to beat them. Always had this fatal prejudice in mind that you have to have inhumane reflexes to get anywhere in these games.
I revisited a lot of my old favourites in 2010. This time I started to analyse the games, trying to efficiently find solutions instead of lamenting my fate (it doesn't help to be 2.02 meter tall if you're holding teeny-tiny NES controllers
). I even have an appropriately terrible picture:

This is the final stage of loop 3, and here I lost my last life. While I had a firmer grasp on the game mechanics now I still thought that it would be ridiculous to even assume for a second that checkpoint recovery of this sort would be possible. I was fairly satisfied with my result, although there were glimpses of doubts.
Now, five years later, I got a score more than twice that big, beating six loops instead of almost three:

I had to pull off some miraculous stunts, I had at least one recovery in every loop from loop 2 onwards, including particularly nasty spots in 4-7 and 5-3. A jovial mention of ACSeraph here, the dreaded moai heads got me in 7-3 - looks like you were right after all, haha.
The game almost immediately came back to me, all my safe routes from five years ago, but my execution and on-the-fly planning was a lot better. Instead of flapping around in disadvantageous situations I made the best out of it, did not panic as much, performed a hell of a lot better as a result.
It was, all in all, an immense joy. I played the hell out of the arcade and the PCE versions, too, there is something to be said about the first incarnation of a game you played, though. They really got everything out of the NES, the amount of bullets in later loops is respectable to say the least. You might not have four options or a creative bonus stage, but you do get a lot of secret bonus point icons and rad new stage layouts. How cool is that?

I've been working on Green Beret / Rush N Attack for a bit and I finally managed to clear 2 loops of it. Not a shmup achievement, but one I'm still proud of.

made it stage 11 (stage 3 of loop 3) on the XBLA version.

Congrats Cave Hermit, Darius Gaiden was the beginning of my rebirth in the genre, heh. First game I sat down to seriously try and 1cc ("I'm going to get the full Darius Gaiden experience or die trying!"). It's a great one.
I'll read the Perikles one above me when I get back from the dentist lol.

Congrats cave hermit, Darius Gaiden's a great game and it just keeps on giving even after you've cleared one route (not that I would know, I haven't cleared the game yet). And damn that's impressive Perikles, I would never have the endurance to loop a game to its seventh loop!
And something of my own, a Dodonpachi 1-ALL (C-L):

Fun game, some of the most fun dodging I've done in a CAVE game. Not particularly hard especially considering how many bombs the game gives you, but there's a good mix of patterns and enemy movements that just makes it fun to dodge and weave through even if you haven't herded the bullets properly, as opposed to just clumping up in a big wall like in many other CAVE games like DOJ. I feel like that makes it a bit more approachable to beginners, and still one of the best bullet hell games despite being one of the oldest.

Awesome job, 7 loops is no joke. I've been back into gradius a bit myself lately, might be time to revisit the NES game.

Maybe you should try the other shot types, I've cleared this with C-S, B-S and B-L in addition to C-L.
You could also try a 1-ALL of DonPachi, it's about the same difficulty as a 1-ALL of DDP.
Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
DonPachi is actually what I'm planning on doing next! I originally wanted to 1-ALL the Hong Kong version, but after messing around with some savestates for that I decided it was a bit too ludicrous for me (the first three stages are hard enough, but the last two stages are totally ridiculous). Fortunately the Japan version seems a lot more reasonable. I'll probably take a detour from DonPachi when Mushihimesama releases on Steam, though. Looking forward to giving that a go since I've barely touched it in MAME/Demul, but of course its launch date falls right when I have the least amount of free time.

I would say it's quite a ways easier. In fact my very first arcade shmup 1cc was donpachi. Though I can see where you're coming from.

Been cleared Dariusburst through zone H, it gets heart-pumping moments when fight the Hungry Glutton with 1 lives, at least it can be cleared even I managed with some luck.
Burst mode is fun though, I want clear it someday.

Re: I DID IT! Share your latest 1CCs/other triumphs here...
Thank you for the kind words, guys!
Got another clear, I even recorded one successful run: 1LC of Pulstar. Played this for a little competition, I was always curious about it, but it never piqued my interest enough to actually try it out. I was surprised by how easy it is, took me about five hours to get my first clear. I remember some people saying that its difficulty is comparable to the first loop of the first R-Type (or slightly harder, even), but I think that's an exaggeration. If you use the purple search laser and the accompanying (massive) slowdowns you'll be able to tone down the difficulty considerably.
Fun game nonetheless, I enjoyed it quite a lot. It's certainly not up to the standards of the all-time great Irem titles, that's an almost unreachable goal anyway, however. It does plagiarise from a veritable cornucopia of other shooters (I spotted references/setpieces/enemies/... from R-Type I-III, X-Multiply, Viewpoint, BioMetal, Crying/Bio-Hazard Battle and Gradius II, there are probably a lot more), the execution on the other hand is for the most parts stupendously solid. My biggest issue with the game is its sheer length: in the same amount of time needed to it you could 2-ALL either one of the first two R-Types (theoretically, anyway). Doesn't help that you essentially have to play two boring battleship stages back to back.
Stage 6 (aptly named "The Terminators") rocks, however! Great audio-visual atmosphere, even though it looks more menacing than it actually is.
Might try to squeeze just a few more points out of this game, albeit the scoring is a bit frustrating. Most enemies are worth peanuts, but some of them give something ridiculous like 10,000 points. So depressing if you miss one or two of them.
Great stuff, I've always been meaning to play Donpachi and Dodonpachi myself to finally get into the realm of somewhat modern shooters. But I always get detracted by something else.

With all the excitement around Mushihemsama and the Steam release I figured I'd try to 1CC this game again.
I beat Mushihemsama Original a few years ago. I mainly bought the Steam release to try the Matsuri version, but I figured I should beat Mushimesama Original again since it's the main version of the game. It took a couple hours to practice up again. Nothing too complex though. I think this is probably CAVE's easiest game, with the exception of maybe Deathsmiles and Futari Black Label. Even then it's kind of a toss up. It's still one of my favorites games ever though.
I would have been in the top 40 on the leaderboard if I had signed in. Goddammit.

Just cleared Mushi's 1.5 mode. It is insanely fun. Going to try for MAX next.

Yup. It is for all intents and purposes the Black Label mode that Mushi never got. I love it.amdiggywhut wrote:Just cleared Mushi's 1.5 mode. It is insanely fun. Going to try for MAX next.

Jumping on the Mushi Original 1CC bandwagon. I know it's not a hard game but I was surprised by how easy this came. I had two lives to spare! That almost never happens. I guess it's because I remember banging my head against Futari Original when I was much less experienced. Maybe the real achievement for me is that I've developed shmup fundamentals I can actually rely on.

Yeah I mentioned this before but I did a (semi) blind first attempt clear of Normal Original. I had never seen anything beyond the opening of stage 4, so there was some fun improv dodging, especially against the snakes on stage 4 and the final boss.

Like Squire Grooktook, I 1cc'd Mushihimesama 1.0 Original. Unlike Squire Grooktook, I didn't 1cc it blind.
And here's a screenshot from about two hours earlier:
