Osorubeshi! Xaklogian (new MSX styled PC release)

Post by Legendary Hoamaru »

Just came across this randomly, has anyone heard of it before? Seems to be a really recent release (September 9th), although there were signs of development since 2011.

MSX style shmup for PC, free to download. Has a Normal and Hard mode.

Download: http://userweb.alles.or.jp/gyonin/game.htm
Normal Mode Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0xBklX3zkGs

Interesting, I'll have to check it out. It seems to be the same creator as 2010's Life Fortress Volcabamba, which is also a good MSX-style shmup, but horizontal rather than vertical. I never got around to clearing that game despite it not being super difficult...

Just gave this a quick try. Similar to Life Fortress Volcabamba, it's good simple fun, easy to get into and enjoy. There seem to be hidden bonus tiles that you can shoot to reveal items such as bonus point items and extends, similar to the Star Soldier series. The bonus items are usually 10k each but I came across one in stage 2 that looked like a little girl and it gave me 350k points. Besides that there are a bunch of destructible colored tiles; I don't know if the different colors are just for decoration or if there's anything significant about the different colors.

Edit: Stage 3 is pretty awesome, I must say. By the way, holding M for a few seconds at the title screen activates an invincibility cheat in both this and Life Fortress Volcabamba.

I just cleared this on Normal, it's a short game and a pretty easy clear. Hard is a significant step up in difficulty, though.

based zakuro god

Apparently one of the La-Mulana guys (Samieru) did music and sound for this, cool.

Just cleared it. What a quirky, fun little game.

This game arguably has the best ship duel ever.

Beat hard mode earlier. The game tells you a way to get into a special, really hard level.

Press K 8 times in the titlescreen (where it says press space key)

Might try to beat that as well, but it is kinda taking the piss.

I was never able to get Volcabamba to run on my laptop (Windows 10, integrated Intel graphics), and this one doesn't seem to like my setup either...anyone aware of anything that might be worth tweaking?

Download MSVCR71.DLL from here http://www.hspdx.net/software/ or somewhere else and put it in the game folder. That might help.

Thanks for that, I just tried it with Xaklogian and it worked, I'll be doing the same with Volcabamba. )

Yeah, it is pretty hilarious. But it is also doable I think, just down to memo plus some decent twitch here and there. I been practising it a bit with giving me 20 lives (pressing up or down at the titlescreen lets you adjust the lives you see in the top right, up to 20). So that helps a bit at getting better at the different patterns X throws at you.

I've been fooling with this a bit today, but I wonder if anyone else is having trouble running it in full screen? I think Stage X would be a lot more doable with a play area larger than a playing card.

Check your graphics driver options.
See if it allows 640x480 resolution; if not, add it as a custom resolution. Also make sure your stretch mode is the one that preserves aspect ratio.

Running it in Windows 7 compatibility mode lets it work in fullscreen, but at half speed.

I'll have to look into getting a 640x480 option set up.

EDIT: If I select 640x480 in the compatibility menu and unselect the Full Screen option in the config menu, the game runs at full screen and at full speed. Thanks your help!

It works the same way for me, but without running in any compatibility mode and only using the default (only) setting for windowed mode.
