Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Hello~!
Has there ever been a moment when playing a shmup that really pissed you off? A Moment that was so frustrating that it made you scream?
If yes, please describe your most aggravating moment here. You can post multiple moments if you want to.
EDIT: Please be specific!

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
I guess I'll start this off.
My most aggravating moment was when I was trying to 1CC DOJ WL for a video and I had a run where I got to Kouryuu's (Hachi's?) final pattern with only two bombs remaining. I pissed both of the bombs away and after a bit of dodging Kouryuu had only a sliver of health left. However right before Kouryuu died I got hit and lost. This on its own wouldn't be that bad except for the fact that the exact same thing happened on the VERY NEXT run. After that I got very angry. Luckily the run right after that I 1CCed the game

Not part of the shmup itself, but I was quite disappointed when I managed a top 10 leaderboard score for Dangun Feveron, only to find the replay desynced before the final stage.

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
I think I got notably more upset back in the 2012~ days. Nowadays I only get uspet at Shoot the Bullet if anything.
-First close run when trying to 1cc UFO Lunatic. This upset me so much even hours after it happened I couldn't quite accept it. Very last spell killed my by an amulet coming from off-screen when I was at the bottom of the screen. Instant death, no 1cc for me. Considering back then UFO Lunatic 1cc was this huge thing that I'd wanted for a long time, it was really really crappy.
-Mad at PoDD when going for Chiyuri Lunatic 1cc.
-Mad at EoSD when the Meek safespot didn't work in a way that I was completely unfamliar. I got over that one pretty fast when I analyzed why I actually died, but the initial shock was strong.
-Mad at StB when I get cursed. The big one was 9-6, that's probably the maddest I've ever been at these games because of the constant repeating of getting runs "close" to my target. When I get mad at StB due to a curse I start playing all day every day until I finally get what I'm after. I'm not sure I'd say it is ever worth it. It's terrible for your mental well being. 9-6 took almost a week of playing 7-9 hours a day and same with 10-1. In both cases, while being pretty much constantly mad at the game. Definitely more trouble than it was worth but those times it was my anger and frustration that fueled my will to fight on in the first place, so whatever.
In general StB causes me to sporadically smash my desk during a grind. It only started doing that after like 800~1000 hours of playtime though but since then I just can't seem to contain my frustration at times ;_;

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
This is probably the worst I've had in recent memory. Made me lose sleep for the next few days until I finally got the 1-ALL. I also almost 1cc'd Deathsmiles today and lost because I lost a life bar on Tyrannosatan with 3 bombs in stock, but I'm not too aggravated about that since I've 1cc'd the game twice before. I've also lost a lot of Cho Ren Sha 68k runs on the last stage or the TLB but those are more due to poor performance prior to the last stage than the performance on that part itself. It aggravated me at first but after a while it started becoming such a regular occurrence that I was ready to accept it by the time I got to the last stage with too few lives, and the game's fun enough that I don't mind not clearing it (especially now that I've gotten the Normal 2-ALL).
Also I tend to get burned out when I play Bakraid and screw up the first three stages too much, but that's more of a gradual process than a "moment."

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Dropping extends in Bakraid today. Not bad in itself, but then I was right in position for one on my final run today, and it dropped right through a pattern of bullets. I just wanted to scream so much. Just wasn't my day. I just have been doing awful this week with Bakraid for some reason.
Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Haha! Goddamn shepardus! I felt the pain of that run, I've had plenty that ended like that.

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Usually I don't really get frustrated in a longer term, but just get angry for a moment, say "fuck" and maybe punch my desk.
That being said I did get pretty annoyed, when during my IN LNB attempts I had 3 or more runs went really well up to stage 5 - a stage that has maybe 2 things that could potentially kill you - and then died 5 or more times there for reasons that are beyond me.

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
The most aggravating thing is the desktop always pop up when I playing any of shumps, I don't know why my computer has this stupid problem. I remeber one night I played CrimzonClover World Ignition, I almost clear the last stage then the desktop pop up multiply, and the game was collapsed because of this, but I got a high score and this score was not recorded
This problem is still esixt and I don't know how to fix it.

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Just a wild guess: could it be the Sticky Keys hotkey, pressing shift 5 times?
If watching the trailer of the game
makes you feel a certain way
I would be very happy if
you would give the game a try

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
I would say this topic is different enough. The big thread of shmup grievances seems to be about a certain aspect of a shmup that makes you angry. This thread is supposed to be about a specific shmuping experience that was the most aggravating. For example, The first post on grievances thread is someone saying that futari stage 1 novice gives them hell. If they wanted to post that here they would have to say a specific moment in futari stage 1 novice that was aggravating. Except this thread is looking for the most aggravating shmuping moment, so unless the most frustrated he's been with a shmup was during futari stage 1 novice then I wouldn't recommend he post that here. I hope this makes sense.Blinge wrote:There's a thread for this stuff.. http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=39393

Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Mis-timing my moves across the top of Jupiter in Batsugun. The first few times I attempted milking that boss for points after watching some youtube vids, I did it perfectly. Happily sitting in the little pockets, picking off the turrets, bombing the little tanks, watching the scores go crazy. Everything was great. Then one night, I died a few times...too tired, not focusing. Since then, every time I get to that part of the game, I start getting nervous and I blow it. I can still 1CC it easily now but the score milking, I just fuck it up constantly and it drives me crazy.

Being on the best run you've ever had, then choking incredibly hard like dying 3 times in a row near the end. Any game.

Basically this but more specifically going into stage 5 of Ketsui no miss no bomb only to choke it all up as one mistake snowballs.Keres wrote:Being on the best run you've ever had, then choking incredibly hard like dying 3 times in a row near the end. Any game.

Almost breaking 5 million in Under Defeat.
Then two days later losing your last ship in the EXACT SAME FUCKING SPOT WITH THE SAME SCORE.

Getting a bad assortment of cubes over your entire extra ship stock in Gradius III can be pretty damn frustrating. I guess it helps relieve some of the rage that it's drawn out every time you have to play through the checkpoint to get there though. Completely choking on the fire stage in spite of you having practiced your ass off at it can be even more infuriating.
Of course, that's just an opinion.

Yeah, I can attest to this. That cube stage is one of the most unfair stages in video game history. Even the best players in the world can have problems with that part, you are almost reliant on drawing a "lucky" sequence or you are fucked. The boss of that stage is also a pain in the ass too, and of course the entire stage including boss is all 1 checkpoint.MathU wrote:Getting a bad assortment of cubes over your entire extra ship stock in Gradius III can be pretty damn frustrating. And then when you finally do get a clear it's with a lower score than your PB.Keres wrote:Being on the best run you've ever had, then choking incredibly hard like dying 3 times in a row near the end. Any game.
Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
For me it's melting down when I have lots of resources in stock. I'm currently playing Strikers 1945 II, I can clear the first loop every single credit, but I may die. Last night I had a "pefect run" through loop 1, no deaths and max bomb stock going into loop 2 just to piss it all completely away at the start of loop 2. My best run ever I came into loop 2 with I think only 1 life in stock and a handful of bombs and somehow did much better. It's just fucking aggravating how flawless you have to be in loop 2 to get anywhere.
Also I swear to god the rank is higher in the PS1 version compared to the MAME version.

Lost the enemy chain in WL DOJ, chaining in this one is hard as fuck which makes I refuse play this game for sxore.
Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
I lost so many world record tier scores in Caladrius to careless late game deaths that I ended up creating a thread about anger management. I took it in the end, but I'm not sure at what cost to my sanity.
Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
Double KO'ing on the Blue Wish TLB twice before I got the Desperate clear. There is nothing more stupid than this. In a game where the dev apologized for what he created, having that shit happen is brutally demoralizing.
Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
The best part is they wanted you to actually dodge the cubes instead of building a little cube fort. The problem with that is they're so big and so fast that you can barely traverse the full width of their hitboxes in time, at least without using so many speedups that you're going to have to die later anyway to make your ship controllable again.pegboy wrote:Yeah, I can attest to this. Re: Most aggravating shmuping moment?
I think that coupled with the Speed Down from Edit Mode may actually be a viable strategy. You can't really die anywhere else though because you'll have to sacrifice powering up on the critical starting area of the final stage to slow yourself down. Since you have to be so consistent I would imagine you'd probably want to memorize the entire order of one hundred cubes and which ones attack you and which ones don't.
Of course, that's just an opinion.
