If you happened to pre-order it from Play-Asia, you can probably send then an email and they can change your pre-order to one of the recently added Sega Direct Under Defeat deals that includes a refurbished JP Dreamcast:tekneekz wrote:i just recently saw videos of under defeat and i preordered it already without a dreamcast

That may be just a myth. I have found two Dreamcasts with a 2001 date on the bottom - both of them booted fine with a bootdisc. I think a couple of people had trouble with some bootdisc and both had 2001 consoles and a conclusion was reached that all 2001 consoles didn't work but that's not true for all 2001 consoles (and it may - and I'm just guessing here - have been bad discs, poor laser that didn't track well on CDRs, etc).MOSQUITO FIGHTER wrote:I think you'd have to get a console manufactured before oct 2000 for the boot disk to work.

For Dreamcast, I know people say to look for a certain date...but that's not always true. Try to get either version 0, or 1. (one that works well of course) There's a small number circled on the bottom of the system which indicates the version. I've had version 2s that read CD-Rs just fine, then again, some have issues. Anyway, as posted above, the cheapest method's the boot disc. It's available for free, so don't pay for one.

Not exactly. My DC is a circle 2 version (which I've retrofitted with a version 1 powerboard for reliability, and I'm thinking of tracking down the version 0 heatpipe/fan combo for quieter cooling) manufactured in Dec. 2000 and will not load up bootdiscs, CD-Rs (even burned at 1x on Taiyo Yuden media with a Plextor burner) or unofficial releases. However, it plays even problematic GD-Rs flawlessly. This DC was part of the Sonic bundle, and was purchased new in June 2001.llabnip wrote:That may be just a myth.
The thoroughly beat up model 1 version manufactured in Dec. 1999 that I had purchased used to play imports on gave all sorts of trouble with some of my GD-R games (e.g. wouldn't load Rez, or a scratched up Shenmue from Gamestop, reset in the middle of Daytona 2001) but loaded bootdiscs and the same CD-Rs that failed on the other DC without any issue at all. After I got the version 2 modchipped, I didn't really need this one so much anymore, and it now belongs to a friend.
