What games do I play now?

I have heard here and there that a lot of people have left the CAVE company so they wont be making shmups like they used to before. I'm used to only playing CAVE games and I don't know where to look for new shmups now so I thought i'd ask here. So did these guys at least move to a different company?

I really enjoyed scoring in deathsmiles and the mushihimesama series, wasn't too big a fan of chaining in DDP. any suggestions on similar games?

lol i've played and love every touhou game. Lolk is great. I just can't get into scoring on that game, but I do play those game regularly

Still not 100% sure what happened with some of their staff. Rumor has it that atleast a few of them moved over to M2.

As for what you should play, you luckily have decades of shmups that you can sift through. If you're looking for newer stuff you are mostly going to be relegated to doujin stuff, which is absolutely not a bad thing by any means.

Not wanting to post another games list, I'm posting a wee list of devs who made more than one shmup each* I'd recommend: Compile, Psikyo, Capcom, Irem, Konami, Raizing, Takumi, Seibu Kaihatsu/MOSS, UPL, Namco, Toaplan, ADK, Data East, Hudson Soft, Red Entertainment, Success.

*) I'm stretching it a bit since not all games I'm thinking of are atuo-scrollers.

I would say just sample a bit of everything, and find what you like.

If you want major Japanese releases that are actually new-ish, Check out Bullet Soul Infinite Burst (actually pretty great, unlike the original), Caladrius Blaze (criminally under-rated), and the upcoming Darius Burst ACEX port.

that list is more "kitchen sink" than "wee" and given that
what did G.rev and Treasure do to you? (ok I'll grant that Treasure can be a bit overrated at times ... but no more than Cave.)

By extension you are also implying that not all shmups by the companies in your list are necessarily worth playing as only a minimum of two have to be worth playing.
So where is the list of games to avoid (provided it is shorter than the list of worthwhile games)?

So which G.rev one isn't worthwhile: Under Defeat (New Order) or Border Down? I realize that people have mixed feelings about Strania, Senko No Ronde (Rev. X & Duo) and Mamoru-kun. (Lets not even talk about Gradius V).

I wouldn't know if Radiant Silvergun or Ikaruga are "worthwhile". When I got a Saturn, then Dreamcast, I put some credits in both, but derived too little enjoyment from them to feel like revisiting either. I don't believe in any shmup canon everybody should follow, or that there are some forbidden shmups which ought to be sealed away.

"*" was hinting at the footnonte in finer font. For example, I like Twinkle Star Sprites and Ninja Commando from ADK which earns them place on the list, but since Ninja Commando isn't auto-scroller, it might be considered not so shmup by some.

From G.rev, I've only played Border Down and Under Defeat, of which I spent more time playing Under Defeat... because I bought it rather than enjoyed it all that much.

Wow, thanks for all the replies. I now have a very nice idea of what games to try. And for horizontal should, I played the hell out of deathsmiles for about 2 years so I'd be comfortable getting into a new one no problem. I've also sunk quite a few credits into progear and akai katana.

REVOLGEAR II Ver.D REVISION+EX v1.50+ on Maniac mode if you want to try a free hori with a lot of bullets. Normal mode is fun too.

Of course, also try Eschatos when it arrives on Steam.
